I’m not really looking forward to this, and I might just drop it altogether if it’s too depressing. I guess I’ve just been thinking about Holyfield’s place in history lately, and figure I shouldn’t turn away from the ugly parts just because they’re ugly.

I'm intrigued. Genuinely.

I’ve been having a very similar conversation with my best friend recently about Holyfield.

How highly do you rate him?

In 2008 Lewis commented on a possible match up with Riddick Bowe. "He waits until I am in retirement to call out my name," said Lewis. "I will come out of retirement to beat up that guy. I'll beat him up for free."

On a personal note, I do remember seeing Williams fight once, on a business trip down to Florida about 5 or 6 years ago. He knocked his stiff out, for whatever it was worth.

Fortune vs Bondoravas R1

Fortune comes out thinking he’s in a parking lot. Throwing lots of off balance haymakers as if to say “Lithuania? Is that near Montana?” Fortune’s windmill eventually winds down to a sort of swaying slap-and-tickle. Bondoravas mostly doesn’t know what the hell is going on. He just squares up and weather the storm, such as it is.

Fortune is boxing a bit, now. Bondoravas supposedly has 220 amateur fights under his belt, and he does look like he is Bondoravas sneaks in a hard left hook downstairs, but it’s still one punch at a time. Bondoravas tries again and goes a bit too low. Fortune takes a long recovery time with less than ten seconds left.

Fortune vs Bondoravas R3

Bondravas looks like he’s settleing into a rhythm of sorts now. The left hook to the body seems to be his game plan, and he’s sticking to it. He is blokcing much of what Fortune is throwing pstairs now, which is both more controlled and less effective then the bombs-away routine of round 1.

Fortune vs Bondoravas R6

Fortune has a little something left, with a good, thudding 4-5 combo. He goes southpaw again, trying to confuse Bondaravas. It works somewhat, with Bondaravas missing big with the left hook upstairs. Fortune splits open bigtime over the left eye… not sure if it was a punch or not. Another close round, but I give it to Bondoravas.

Fortune is really experimenting with switch-hitting, and it eventually forces Bondoravas to switch stances too. This isn’t a bad fight, but it’s strange. They are too mediocre boxers who seem to really want to box, and slightly better than average punches who don’t seem to want to punch.

Barrett/Davis Round 1

This round has been more about the inane drivel that the commentators spout than the punches thrown: For example, David Tua got more mentions during the round than did Davis.

Anyway: Barrett is clearly the better of the two guys, and is landing at will. Unfortunately, he’s too lazy for that to really matter.

Barrett 10-9 on accuracy without action.

Holmes talking about southpaws. You know, I always thought the same thing about Holmes that he’s actually saying. Holmes didn’t fight southpaws as a pro, and he basically admits he was vulnerable to them as a amateur. This is a very interesting era in boxing in that way, the number of good lefties fighting at the top level.

Barrett/Davis Round 2

Barrett caught with a decent shot and the guys in the box nearly pass out with excitement.

Barrett jabbing, but it’s ineffective and Davis isn’t perturbed.

Davis wobbled when Barrett lands a couple of shots to the body, he staggers a little but not exactly ‘hurt’.

Commentators give it to Davis, I score it for Monty, in an unconvincing fashion.

Barrett/Davis Round 3

Davis realises, Marcos Maidana style, that there is one shot he can’t miss with. The winging left hand. He stings Monty with it a few times, then abandons it and shoves Monty like they’re in a bar brawl. Monty looking really tentative, and spits out his gumshield. Holmes et al feel it’s more productive to discuss Holmes’ career than the ‘action’ in the ring.

Barrett lands a decent hook, and that’s his total contribution to the round.

Barrett/Davis Round 4

(Chaos100 rapidly losing the will to live)

Barrett attempts to sack Davis, amid various levels of hilarity. No real zip on shots from Barrett but he is more accurate, whereas Davis is using power but no class. Every shot Monte takes seems to rock him backwards, and he won’t set his feet and commit. Body shots are the order of the day, and Barrett orders seconds. And now we have a hug fest.

I’m gonna abstain, and score it level. I didn’t think either guy did enough, unless you take the NFL maneouvre into consideration.

Barrett, we are reliably informed, is ‘flicking’ the jab… I think that means it is crap. There is nothing behind it.

Davis lands shots to the body, and the commentators react like this is The Thrilla Episode 2. Barrett was visibly shaken though, so I can kind of get it.

Barrett now trying to jab his way through the round, but loses it on effective aggression…. if I can be forgiven for using that term with regard this fight….

This is appalling. Flat-footed crap. If Larry Holmes were dead, he’d be rolling in his grave. As it is, he’s left the commentary box, probably to go find some Valium.

There is some ACTION. We get PUNCHES. I really wish I had the energy to try to describe, but I’ve all but given up. Barrett lunging, Davis knackered, this should be all but done. Tua gets another mention (TUA MENTION COUNT – 1,869)

Monte jabbing, and now it actually lands a bit, and NOW the guys in the box mention that not many shots are being landed. Cos it was bloody MAB/Morales up til now, if ya didn’t know.

Barrett/Davis Round 8

It’s the last one!! Thank you (insert higher being of your choice here).

Davis is apparently there for the taking this round: Monte circa 2005 would have knocked him out quick as hell.

We have A FIVE PUNCH COMBINATION!! And Monte is powerful,or something. Davis offering nothing. Monte is chasing but not really throwing, and he still looks terrified every time Davis twitches his left shoulder. Davis trying to land the big left hand a la Audley/Sprott, but there is no accuracy when he throws. Monte dictating the pace, but that’s pretty much by default.

Now we are introduced to Davis: the technical southpaw. Wowowowowowow.

What crap. I can’t believe I wasted my time on this.

You know, this is the bullshit of the American heavyweight scene, right now. People want to pretend the problem is Tye “Big Skye” Fields, who is just horseshit, but the problem is these two gentlemen here: Long and Kingpin.

Well there is no way I'm doing RBR.

I’m gonna get me some Jim Beam, and probably doze off before Holy comes out aged 347, and then I can pretend it was all a bad dream.

Holyfield

sans tache: looks really different. Looks, for want of a better phrase, like a black guy. Funny that, eh? But Holyfield has always had his own distinctive look, and without the tache, he lacks that. Kind of a generic look. Weird.

I have to just say:

Even against mediocre (debatably) compettion, Holyfield could just get beat at this point in his ‘career’.

If he loses to Williams, or even if it’s close, I hope he sees sense.

What do you refer to that was “the big problem in his career”?

Size? His heart condition? The fact he went on too long?

I wondered about this comment when you made it, and I’m curious as to what you meant.
