Hopkins vs Dawson: Live Results and Round-By-Round Coverage
Tonight at 9 p.m. EDT, HBO pay-per-view presents a four-fight card headlined by the oldest world champion in boxing history, as 46-year-old Bernard Hopkins (52-5-2, 32 KO) defends against Chad Dawson (30-1, 17 KO) in the main event.
Also on the card, Jorge Linares (31-1, 20 KO) meets Antonio DeMarco (25-2-1, 18 KO) for the vacant WBC lightweight title. The hyper-talented Linares, 26, is still looking to get his career back on track after his shocking TKO-1 loss in 2009 to Juan Carlos Salgado, while DeMarco is generally an exciting and gutsy fighter.
In a 12-round junior welterweight fight, Kendall Holt (27-4, 15 KO) steps back onto the major stage against Golden Boy prospect Danny Garcia (21-0, 14 KO). Garcia is a 23-year-old prospect taking a step up in class, at least if the erratic Holt, 30, brings his A-game to the contest.
In the pay-per-view opener, popular veteran Paulie Malignaggi (29-4, 6 KO) faces Orlando Lora (28-1-1, 19 KO) in a 10-round welterweight bout. Malignaggi is hoping to land a title shot at the new weight in 2012.
Andrew Fruman will be handling tonight's round-by-round action and post-fight analysis.

I’ll probably miss this extravaganza, since tomorrow I’ve got to be up early, and sober, and at the University, all at the same time. I’m not sure I’ve ever that before.
I found out yesterday from the Comcast lady that if you get a ppv, you have it on your OnDemand for exactly 24 hours. That is, the card starts at 8:00pm, and the OnDemand thing will end at exactly 8:00pm Sunday nite, so you don’t want to wait to start watching till 6:00pm sunday—start no later than 3:30-4:00. Iam buying it, my pc is in too much trouble to put it through another trip to Dan Tucker’s.

Just for interest, so I can gather a little bit of opinion:
Who do you guys have winning the fight, and by which method?
1. Hopkins/Points
2. Hopkins/Stoppage
3. Dawson/Points
4. Dawson/Stoppage
5. Draw
I’m picking (1).

Omg the Dewey Bozella fight ended HILARIOUSLY
fake Hopkins spit his mouthpiece out like 5 times, the 5th time dude was juggling it and Bozella landed a power right mid-juggle like a BOSS

Is that on the televised portion of the card?

Paulie looking slicker than a greased up weasel...
But the best shot of the round still credited to Lora…
by Maximus Decimus Meridius on Oct 15, 2011 9:10 PM EDT reply actions
Round 1
Through the first minute, it’s a jabbing contest with Lora holding his own. Maliganggi just jumped in with a quick combo, and then slipped some return fire – he’s clearly the quicker man in there. Malignaggi with a little flurry, and Lora returns fire and staggers him! Wow. I don’t know if that was a balance shot, but Maliganggi wobbled as he backed up. Malignaggi with some swelling under the left eye already. Malignaggi with a combo with about ten seconds left that lands. It was a right hand that nearly dropped Malignaggi earlier in the round.
TheBoxingBulletin.com
Another look at the right hand...
It was a clean right hand that landed flush. Lora gets the round on Harold’s card.
TheBoxingBulletin.com
Round 2
Paulie is working the jab this round as he circles to his left. He’s out-hustling Lora in this session, which has so far been uneventful. Lora is plodding away in pursuit. Lora struggling to get close this round – he’s getting peppered from the outside, though steadily pushing forward.
TheBoxingBulletin.com
Geez, if only Paulie had any pop. He’s so fast, and really a stellar sharpshooter. Sometimes he can just be a joy to watch on a technical level.
Agreed.
Maybe he should hire Capetillo as his trainer…
by Maximus Decimus Meridius on Oct 15, 2011 9:17 PM EDT up reply actions
Round 3
Harold has it 1-1 after 2. I’m in agreement so far, though the first session was pretty close.
Malignaggi jabbing nicely from the outside. Occasionally jabs to the body as well, and he’s also mixing in the occasional right when he pops a combo. He just landed a nice 1-2, Lora tried to respond but a little slow off the mark. Lora just missed with a right. He’s steadily edging forward, though struggling to land anything. Lora manages to get in a decent right near the end of the round, but Paulie for the most part, is looking comfy.
TheBoxingBulletin.com
Round 4
Harold has it 2-1 PM.
More of the same so far this round. Paulie circling to his left, while popping the jab as Lora plods forward. Lora is trying to land the right hand when he gets into range – he’s mostly catching air, though has just missed with a couple. PM just too quick here.
TheBoxingBulletin.com
Is Paulie about to stop a big, strong, Mexican welterweight?
Lora does not look happy with that cut…
by Maximus Decimus Meridius on Oct 15, 2011 9:23 PM EDT reply actions
Round 5
Lora has a cut above the eye-lid, which the doctor took a look at before the round started. Harold has it 3-1.
Lora continues to plod forward without much luck. PM with a nice 1-2. Now a nice jab. Lora tries to barge forward and work the body, but PM escapes to his left. PM keeps circling away to his left, popping home the jab and occasional 1-2. Steward just said that Lora needs to step it up… and about 20 seconds later, he lands a right hand. He tries to work inside again, and PM ties him up. There’s the bell, and Lora goes to Paulie’s corner by mistake.
TheBoxingBulletin.com
Round 6
Malignaggi comfortably in front at the half-way point. He’s constantly a step ahead of Lora. Not much else to say, as it’s more of the same this round. Lora managing to get into range with about a minute left in the range, though quickly gets tied up. PM slips to the canvas, and Corona is quick to let everyone know that it’s not a knockdown. PM pops home a combo, and a left in the last 10-15 seconds left in the round.
TheBoxingBulletin.com
And Lora is talking about quitting in the corner...
by Maximus Decimus Meridius on Oct 15, 2011 9:31 PM EDT reply actions
Round 7
More of the same, though PM seems a little looser with his shots. Might be getting a touch tired. Lora not really able to take much advantage, as he’s a bit ragged too. PM still having things mostly his way. He’s backing away, circling to his left, sticking home the jab, and mixing in the right hand. It’s getting a little repetitive, and not all that thrilling.
TheBoxingBulletin.com
Round 8
A bit of a change here early in the round, as PM is taking over the middle of the ring, while Lora is on the outside and doesn’t seem to eager to get busy. Now Lora tries to work, but he misses, as Paulie slips away. PM pops home a right. Lampley comments that Lora is a perfect opponent for PM – and it’s easy to agree. Lora offers no head movement, as he slowly walks forward – he’s made to order for a stick and move fighter.
TheBoxingBulletin.com
Malignaggi looks great tonight. I’m enjoying him a lot.
There is no safety in numbers, or in anything else--James Thurber, 1939
Since the Punch stats just came up, I'm going to defend my giving the first round to Paulie
Paulie outlanded Lora 24-12 in the first. Lora landed the biggest punch of the round, but Paulie won 2:58 of that round in my view.
Harold Lederman giving it to Lora is strange to me.
by Maximus Decimus Meridius on Oct 15, 2011 9:40 PM EDT reply actions
Round 9
This is the first time in Lora’s career that he’ll be seeing the 9th round of a fight.
Lampley comments that Lora’s doing his best. He is – but he’s just too limited. Not much to report this round. More of the same – with Lora plodding forward, missing with right hands, and getting jabbed. He does seem to be getting a little closer, but PM has easily tied him up on the moments he gets inside.
TheBoxingBulletin.com
Round 10
PM standing his ground in the middle of the ring here in the 10th – doesn’t seem to feel he’s got much to worry about. He’s also out-working Lora in close here. Now, he backs away and lets Lora come to him, and pops home a right. More mixing in close, and Lora getting a few shots in. Now PM backs away again and they clinch. Been more clinches over the second half of the fight, but not all that many. About 20 seconds left. PM with a really nice right hand, and he raises his arms as the final seconds tick down.
TheBoxingBulletin.com
Love Paulie showboating at the end.
Good display, even if the guy was a come forward pressure fighter whose low output meant he was exerting very little pressure.
by Maximus Decimus Meridius on Oct 15, 2011 9:48 PM EDT reply actions
I usually like Lederman, but there was no round I thought Lora won. I think Harold gave him the 12th for the sake of making it look even a little bit competitive...
by Maximus Decimus Meridius on Oct 15, 2011 9:49 PM EDT up reply actions
I didn’t see a good argument for giving Lora the last round. The first round was a tough one – it depends on how much one values that one big shot. I’m a guy that tends to score damage, and Lora arguably did more damage with that one shot than PM did the rest of the round, so I gave it to him.
TheBoxingBulletin.com
I can see the 'damage' argument
But then you have to take into the equation the other guy’s chin. Would that one big shot count for more/less/same against Paulie than it would against, say, Kendall Holt (whose chin is questionable)?
Damage is a hard thing to quantify.
by Maximus Decimus Meridius on Oct 15, 2011 9:54 PM EDT up reply actions
I suppose what I mean is that I don't think that shot did any real 'damage' to Paulie.
But the same shot would have done much more damage to a chinny fighter, and therefore the one big shot counts for more or less depending on the recipient?
I just judge based on who controls the fight, I think. Paulie was in control, he dictated the pace and direction, and he landed more shots.
That said, I know what you mean.
by Maximus Decimus Meridius on Oct 15, 2011 9:57 PM EDT up reply actions
I meant:

Paulie is wearing a shirt that says “Devon is my…” They seem to not be showing the last word. Could it be “bitch?”
I think 98-92 is amazingly wide for Lora. What a disgraceful card.
(and yes, this is tongue in cheek… :)

Holt also could have beat Bradley — it was one of those fights where Holt was winning the rounds where his mind was in the fight.

Round 1
Neither really letting their hands go over the first 30 seconds. Cautious start. Holt just landed a little right hand. I got a bit distracted checking on the alarming baseball game score – apologies, as I missed about 45 seconds. Nice exchange at the end of the round, with both guys opening up, though neither appeared to land anything significant.
TheBoxingBulletin.com
Garcia gets no love from me for his love of punching his opponents multiple times on the sides during a clinch. God, that shit is annoying.
Round 2
Harold gave it to Holt. According to Lampley, both guys combined to only throw 48 punches in the round.
Garcia tries to flurry, before getting tied up. Action in the middle of the ring. Garcia just fired a big right, but missed. Holt just landed a right hand over the top. Holt is edging forward slightly, with Garcia circling to his left – and there’s a clinch as Holt tries to jump in. Holt’s trunks seem to be falling down a little. Garcia missed with a hook, and Holt lands a glancing right hand. Garcia is just missing with some of his counters. Now there’s a clinch, and the ref takes a moment to try and pull Holt’s trunks up. Holt with a right hand. Garcia tries to respond, but Holt slides away. There’s another clinch. Been a few of those. Garcia lands a good right just before the bell.

Round 3
Garcia really moved Holt back with that last right hand of the second. Harold gave him the round, probably from that one punch. He’s got it 1-1.
Garcia landed another good right hand about 30 seconds in the round. He jumps in with a hook, but it’s blocked. He’s got Holt’s attention, as Holt backs up quickly. Now there’s a clinch. Garcia tries to jump in with a hook, and then fires a right. Now he backs Holt into the ropes and opens up with a flurry to the body. Holt escapes, and then forces a clinch. Good round so far for Garcia. Holt tries to hook to the body, and then slides away. Garcia dictating the action here, with Holt backing up. Now Holt lands a solid counter. He’s going to have to land more of those to keep Garcia off. Now hold edges forward, and Garcia tries to counter, and misses with a big right. Garcia with a chopping right. About 15 seconds left. Garcia with a flurry to the body before the bell. Good round for Garcia.
TheBoxingBulletin.com
Round 4
Harold has it 2-1 Garcia.
Holt edging forward here in the 4th, though cautiously. Now he swings and misses with a hook. Kellerman comments that Holt has fallen into the trap of trying to set up one big punch. Holt leans in and scores with a right hand to the body. Holt catches Garcia with a hook on the way in. Now Garcia misses over the top with a hook. Holt flicks out a couple jabs, and then comes over the top and misses with a right. Garcia misses with his right. Garcia lands a right. Garcia comes forward, misses with his first shot, but lands the second. About 30 seconds left in the round. Not much happens down the stretch.

Action in the middle of the ring. There’s a clinch. And another clinch. Garcia lands a hook, and they come together and clash heads. Holt with a left hook. They’ve had a couple decent exchanges in the middle of the ring, but are coming together awkwardly at times, and clinching. Another clinch. Holt with a decent combo ans Garcia covers up. Garcia comes forward and tries to work the body, but gets tied up.

Neither is committing to the attack. Garcia now with a jab. There’s another clinch as they come together. About 1 minute left in the round. Garcia comes forward and gets tied up. Holt with a shot to the body, but I think it was blocked. Now Garcia bangs home a shot to the body, and there’s a clash of heads. Neither guy damaged, fortunately. 30 seconds left. A good flurry to the body by Garcia. Garcia with a hook, and follows up with some pressure to the body. Holt tries to respond, and lands to the body. A good exchange there to close the round. Right really came to life over the last 45 seconds or so of that round, with Garcia the one showing the initiative.

Round 7
The round is underway, but Max is talking to Dawson – which I think can wait, can’t it? The beginning of the last round was overshadowed by a Hopkins interview. Harold has it 5-1 Garcia by the way. Okay, now we’re back live with the fight. About 2:05 to go. I don’t need to see interviews while the action is going on, thanks HBO. Garcia with a jab. Now he misses over the top with a hook. Holt tries to respond, might have got one shot in. There’s a good exchange in the middle of the ring. Garcia tries to go to the body, and gets tied up. Garcia again tries to go to the body, and there’s another clinch. And another clinch. Holt with a good hook that lands. Garcia responds by digging to the body. Holt with a combo. Round 2
Steward is very impressed with Linares so far.
Linares with a left. Now he misses over the top with a right and almost lost his balance. TD is shooting out the jab, but not looking to open up with anything else. Linares with a cuffing left. Action here in the middle of the ring. Linares with a jab. TD with a jab. Linares is stalking patiently, with TD circling. Now TD fires a right hand, though it’s short. Linares with a jab. Linares short with a counter left.
TheBoxingBulletin.com
Round 3
Harold has it 2-0 Linares.
Linares sticking out the jab. According to Lampley, Linares sparred 30 rounds with Pac to prepare for this fight. DeMarco is a lot more comfortable now than in the opening session. He’s standing his ground in the middle of the ring, and is edging his way forward – though not landing. Nice uppercut from Linares, but TD gives him a look to say it didn’t bother him. Now TD shoots a right over the top. Lampley just mentioned that TD has a mouse under his left eye. Linares with a very quick flurry.
TheBoxingBulletin.com
Round 4
Harold has it 3-0.
Linares edging forward here early in the round. TD responds though with a 1-2. Linares with a jab. Now fires a 1-2 off. Linares just got the better of a decent exchange. Now TD is circling away as Linares edges forward. TD is flicking out the jab – though from too safe a distance for it to score. Linares with a little hook. Linares with a jab. TD is short again with the jab. He’s clearly a little worried about getting countered with something heavy, and is just not committing offensively. Now he fires a 1-2. Linares tries to flurry, though don’t think anything landed. TD now coming forward. There’s the bell.
TheBoxingBulletin.com
Round 5
Linares a little short with the right hand. Yeah, he’s smooth, and quick – but I’m not sure his accuracy is all that great. I dunno. Now it’s DeMarco thta is edging forward, with Linares circling away. Linares with a flurry to the body. Linares with a nice right hand. TD with a jab that is short. TD edges forward and shoots a right hand, but it misses. Linares is circling away, looking to counter. He sticks home the jab. Linares on his toes now, sticks home the jab. Now he slips away as TD tries to press. There’s the bell.

He pushes forward, and he’s got some confidence now. Linares fires back with some intensity. For the first time tonight, we’ve got some good action. Linares fighting back well though. TD fires back. Good action here.

Round 7
Where’s the cut? I was distracted between rounds.
TD pushing forward to start the round. He’s won the last 2 on Harold’s card, and is now down 4-2. TD just short with a right hand. TD misses over the top with a right. Nice counter right by Linares. TD edging forward, but Linares with a couple of decent flurries. The cut is on the bridge of Linares’ nose. Linares with a little right hand to the body. TD is just short with a right. Linares with a jab. Linares with a flurry. He’s bouncing back well this round, after the trouble he faced in the 6th. He just landed a good body shot, and then slipped away from DeMarco’s return fire. TD misses with a right. There’s the bell.

Round 8
Harold gave the last round to DeMarco. Don’t agree at all. But he’s got it 4-3 now for Linares.
TD is pushing forward here in the 8th – though neither landing much. Now TD just landed a little hook. Linares with a nice counter, and then dances away. TD on him quickly though. He’s in chase mode. But he’s also short with most of what he’s throwing. Linares jabs to the body. DeMarco with a glancing left. Now he tries to flurry, but Linares fires back with his own flurry. Linares has been cut again. He bangs home a good heavy counter before the bell.
TheBoxingBulletin.com
Round 9
Harold has it 5-3 now for Linares.
Action in the middle of the ring. TD pushing fowrard, but Linares landing the cleaner shots. A very nice flurry from Linares, though not sitting down on any of the shots. TD is trying to make a fight of it, and having some success, but he’s just not landing cleanly too frequently. Linares fires a right, and slides away. He’s getting backed up, but he’s not really an “uncomfortable” backingup. Now he fires off a combo. TD keeps coming though.
TheBoxingBulletin.com
DeMarco needs to actually push the action at this point,
he needs to either KO Linares, or make those cuts worse and force the doctor’s hand.
Waiting and hoping will not do it.

It’s clear that Hopkins is going to try and make this messy. Dawson edges forward, with Hopkins backing into the corner, and he tries to fire a left, but I think it missed. Now they’re back in the middle of the ring. “So far, the fight’s a stinker.” – Max. Dawson edging forward, as Hopkins circles away. Hopkins tries to land a lead right, but Dawson safely backs away. Now Dawson tries to flurry, and Hopkins ties him up. We’re going to have plenty of clinches tonight. Hopkins is short with the jab. Dawson with a jab. Hopkins again tries to jump in. Look, I will say this for Max and post-fight: Max hit Nard with the old “Boy Who Cried Wolf” thing, and Nard flinched a little. Old Man X has been known to cry wolf for a breather from time to time, and even if he was legit hurt, it is tough to feel sympathy for him except as a die-hard fan.

pretty spot on analysis here, it seems to me
It’s definitely possible his shoulder was messed up, but how messed up and how much it played into Hopkins’ reaction are hard to say.

Going by tonight, Hulk Hogan took up the wrong sport.
Seriously, how can it be a TKO when no punch was landed, no count was given, and one guy has literally grabbed the other guy’s leg and hoist-chucked him into/through the ropes?
This HAS to be overturned. Dawson did NOT perform any known legal attack in a boxing context, and a TKO is beyond belief. If there had to be a winner, surely it would be Hopkins via DQ? A completely illegal fireman’s-lift type move, complete with leg-grabbing (resulting in both of Hopkins’ feet being lifted off the ground) followed by throwing the guy on the floor?
This was a foul. And even if it was not ruled as such, such a maneouvre does not and never has warranted a TKO victory. A no-contest is the absolute minimum here, surely?

OK, I'll bite.
If only to play the devil’s advocate, here’s potentially why: because Hopkins climbed on top of Dawson’s back and Dawson reacted to Hopkins’ wrestling with some of his own. The ref saw it as a wash, and Hopkins refused to fight after a questionable-looking maybe-injury. Thus Hopkins quit. You don’t count a guy out when he quits.
Boxing writer: "Iran, what are you going to do when you retire?"
Iran Barkley: "Rob your house"
Hopkins said he told the ref he'd fight on with one arm if necessary.
He also said the ref then turned and walked away.

And for the record:
I do not believe Hopkins quit.
The guy landed from around head height straight on his elbow.
But you may see it differently.

I'm not certain, to be honest.
Boxing writer: "Iran, what are you going to do when you retire?"
Iran Barkley: "Rob your house"
Yes, he did claim that. Did you hear him say it? I didn't.
I’ll watch it again. I’ve heard so may Hopkins lines after his losses that I confess I approach his post-fight ring interviews with a healthy does of skepticism.
Boxing writer: "Iran, what are you going to do when you retire?"
Iran Barkley: "Rob your house"
er, "dose" of skepticism
Boxing writer: "Iran, what are you going to do when you retire?"
Iran Barkley: "Rob your house"
This is the perfect “who do the powers-that-be want to win” scenario. I fully believe that the ref did not say he was going to TKO Hopkins… and that Hopkins didn’t ask him, since doing so would have screwed up his bluff. Hopkins lost a poker game tonight, not a boxing match.

I wonder if Hopkins was trying to sale the injury so hard to try and get a point or two deducted from Chad

Or:
Maybe it was a real injury.
OR maybe he was trying for the DQ.
I personally don’t think Hopkins is the sort to really fake a fight-stopping injury, even if he does milk the low-blow/foul thing for other reasons.
I can’t see Bernard actually staying down if he thought the fight was going to be ended.

I’m about as big a Hopkins fan as you will find, and I thought for sure he was faking/milking/bluffing down there. Maybe he was, maybe he wasn’t. But whatever the case, I’m sure that someone decided that if Hopkins goes down, he stays down. Had it been Julio Cesar Chavez Junior rolling around on the canvas down there, they would have air-lifted his ass out of the ring on a C-130 and sent his opponent to death row! Let’s be real, here.

Look I realize Hopkins has often gotten a raw deal, but as I said above HE was the HBO fighter tonight. The network already screwed over Chad once to get Hopkins his Pascal rematch first, and they still have another million-dollar fight owed to Hopkins. This was referee incompetence, not a network/promoter/commission conspiracy.
Tickets for four to the Hopkins fight: $200
Travel costs to get to/from LA: $160
Hotel/motel costs for the night’s stay: $120
Realising that maybe staying at home and catching the fight for $50 is a better option, given the fickle nature of boxing: Priceless.

if you spent $480 to see a 46 year old boxer fight Dawson..even if it is BHOP (remind me the last time anyone enjoyed watching him fight?) you are a sucker and deserved to have your money wasted in watching this joke of a boxing PPV. what a disgrace.

So, it appears my PPV dollars of late
have gone to the effort of entertainment rather than actual boxing.
Wear something sexy to my funeral.
Those $60 bucks that I saved by not ordering this fight, will be going into my gas tank tommorrow

I'm grateful to British boxing fans for supporting the sport, which allowed for the British broadcast to happen,
which allowed a lot of us to see the fight. British fans rock.

I liked
“This is a gangster? A gangster (or an executioner for that matter) would’ve got up and fought.” I agree. I loved Hop – lost all respect for him when he rolled around on the ground like he got shot in the balls against Calzaghe. I’m tired of his bullshit. You can’t be red yesterday and yellow today.
And you know what? – I’m so fucking sick of him jumping on people. His best weapon is his willingness to jump on people and hold the fuck on. Hit and hold. I’m done with him.
"While he may strike hard blows, he is not at liberty to strike foul ones." J. Sutherland.
Hop said, "It doesn't matter what I did ten years ago for tonight."
And I agree with that because I saw Hopkins climb on Dawson’s back, raising off his feet to try and tire him out. Dawson said, “No, thanks.” And, then the unfortunate injury happened. Live by the sword, die by the sword. Hopkins plays with fire / bullshit, and he got burned / covered.
