Pacquiao vs Marquez: HBO Face-Off With Max Kellerman (Video)

Here's the full HBO Face-Off between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez, with trainers Freddie Roach and Nacho Beristain, with Max Kellerman serving as host.

It might just be me, but this is straight up painful. Watching Max Kellerman try desperately to create tension between two fighters who do have history but mostly have exhibited great respect for one another is a chore. I don't blame Kellerman; he's just doing his job. I blame the job itself. The two fighters clearly aren't at this thing to be clowns, and neither of them look all that interested at all. The dramatic score ("Dark, ominous tones") is more hilarious than anything -- this is almost parody in certain shots, and I'm also not blaming the production team. Just doing their jobs. But man do these guys not fit this bill.

In other words, there's no Mayweather or Haye or even Ortiz to make this thing work the way it's supposed to. Pacquiao and Marquez are just a couple of great fighters having a fight. Not everything is going to work in this format. It also furthers my worry that this "24/7" is going to be really, really rough to get through. These guys just aren't compelling reality TV stars. And thank God that they don't try to force themselves to be.

I’m actually looking forward to this more than I had been previously.

THe fact is that JMM is and will always be a stylistic problem for the always aggressive combination punching offensive style of Pacquiao. Whenever a fighter throws as much as manny against a counterpuncher as good as Marquez, he is bound to get caught. And he will.

I still think he MP will beat him up pretty good, but I wouldn’t at all be surprised if the first four or so rounds are dynamite and it is ends in a close decision.

Now if Manny does catch him hard like he did three times in the first fight…..he will finish him.

I haven’t watched this yet but when i first heard that they were doing this face off, my first thoughts were “bad idea”. They both have similar, humble personalities and are both seen as good guys.
You need at least one bad guy for this to work, imo.

Isn't Pac an actor?

He should use his acting skills, assuming he has any which i doubt, atleast to pretend to make this interesting. This is just embarrassing and should not have aired

history between the two...

…is interesting enough. knowing that both will give their very best on fightnight and not touch gloves all the time means that this will be a war even if it only last a round.

if you dont find that interesting then i suggest to watch wrestling.

I was suprised Cortez didnt take a point away from Pacman for hitting JMM while he had one of his gloves was on the canvas.

I may the dissenting view among fans but I liked this interview

Seeing Bernard rattle Pascal was entertaining, but seeing calm, accurate responses to pointed questions with both fighters present in this interview actually tells me things. It doesn’t tell me startling things, but hearing Marquez say he thought a hit was illegal but not dirty or hearing Pacquiao say the punches were hurting him but not shaking his focus is more interesting than hearing two boxers call each other girls or homos or other name calling.

Also, having the fighters watch their fight together is pretty cool, like old “the way things were” shows from back in the day. How cool was it to see Rocky Graziano and Jake Lamotta opposite Sugar Ray Robinson talk about how they felt during specific sequences? I love this stuff.

The fight sells itself… you don’t need a faceoff to want to see it more.

I mean Manny and Juan Manuel are singing on the Mexican version of American Idol a few weeks back… you can’t create tension when it isn’t there.

I think it was fantastic

I love JMM more than I even knew.

these are two true fighters giving the fans a fight that frankly they did not need to do. They aree doing it for money, for pride and for legacy.

Twi humble guys who do their shizzzle in the ring.
I just loved it.

And it was all about boxing….not some Ozborne like crap.

Kellerman looked pathetic in this. I don’t appreciate his arrogant attitude when dealing with prize fighters. He seems to always talk down to them. He also had a hard on for Pac.

HBO did a great job with this. Having the 2 fighters stare at each other and make angry faces wont work for these to. Having the previous 2 fights and having them go over it was a great idea. I cant realy knock it. The 24/7 will be the usual for these to fighters but this was different

Ok, I have to say I am legit excited for this fight.

I didn´t think I would be and even if this was an decent hype piece (interesting concept to have the guys watch the previous fights with their coaches), it did not do it.
However, the closer we come and the more I think about their first two fights and the fights they have had since then, I am really getting excited. Mainly because these two are my absolute favourite boxers to watch of this era in boxing (the only era I have experianced first hand, and not through watching old fights on my computer).
I know Manny have most likely improved to much for Marquez to make it a fight as great as the first two, but on the other hand, Marquez have craft, in ring intelligence like few and just keeps comming, no mather what you hit him with, even if you knock him down.

Apparently that is enough for me to start hoping and feel all excited about the fight. I guess I am simply adding up the excitement i usaly feel when either one of them is about to fight, in to one great feeling…

Yeah I actually really liked this interview. Max drew upon the last two fights’ action to generate questions about the in-ring drama, asked the trainers and fighters technical questions about some of the punches, and had each fighter explain in their own words what they felt the stakes of this fight were. The last few face-offs were pretty tension-filled, but this one showed that a “Face-Off” between two friendly fighters can still be very interesting in its own way.

Prefer this to fake gnashing of teeth and snarling. Learned more. Think it’s fine for boxers to be perceived as normal, civilized guys.
