ShoBox: Gonzales vs Duran - Live Results and Round-By-Round Coverage

Tonight's ShoBox double-header features middleweights Brandon Gonzales and Ossie Duran in the main event. (Photo by Tom Casino/SHOWTIME)

Tonight at 11 p.m. EDT on Showtime, the latest edition of ShoBox: The New Generation goes live from Bally's Event Center in Atlantic City, N.J., with a pair of fights from Goossen Tutor Promotions.

The main event was originally scheduled to be a heavyweight eliminator between contenders Eddie Chambers and Tony Thompson, but that fight was scrapped when Chambers injured his back in training. Instead, the main event will be an eight-round middleweight bout between recently signed GTP prospect Brandon Gonzales (14-0, 10 KO), and never-stopped veteran Ossie Duran (26-8-2, 10 KO). It'll be a good first, real look at Gonzales, a 27-year-old who was the man in the ring with Andre Ward when Ward suffered his freak cut in recent sparring.

The co-feature is a welterweight contest, also eight rounds, between former amateur standout Javier Molina (9-0, 4 KO) and Artemio Reyes (13-1, 11 KO). Molina has done well so far in his pro career, but has been far from flawless, and this one could be a little more interesting than it seems. I'm getting sort of an Archie Ray Marquez vs Art Hovhannisyan vibe from this one.

We'll be here at 11 with live coverage of both fights.

Great, the one time I have the chance to sit down and do live boxing in a while, nobody’s here.

Anyway, I’m getting drunk, so this could be fun. and I mean getting drunk fast. none of this mixing crap.

Molina vs Reyes Round 1

Hideously ugly ring. Reyes jabbing, but you’d be overdoing it to call it crisp. Half of the round is feeling out. Molina making Reyes miss on counters. Farhood notes that Molina is very comfortable, and he’s right. Molina always looks very relaxed. Molina with some jabs getting in, Reyes with a slapping left to the body. Reyes very slow with his left hook. Reyes gets him into the corner with the jab, then gets a couple body shot sin. Jabs from Reyes to end the round. Close, but I think Molina controlled most of it. Reyes did pressure.

Molina 10-9

Molina vs Reyes Round 2

Reyes closing the gap some to start the round, but once there he finds himself on the end of a Molina combo. But this is better, more effective pressure. Body shot by Molina. Molina being backed to the ropes a lot. Reyes missing more than landing, Molina landing nice shots in counter. Molina doing work as they trade in close. Body shot from Reyes, then a nice uppercut that pops Molina’s head back. Reyes starting to get his way — Molina warned for a low shot. Molina looking for counters, and a left lands. But Reyes marches through it. Getting some action now.

Reyes 10-9

Molina vs Reyes Round 3

Reyes again aggressive to start the round. Molina doesn’t seem to know how to deal with that so well. Eats a right hand inside. Reyes is tall, but he’s effective close. He just looks stronger than Molina. Molina warned for another low shot. Reyes with a right. Another right. Molina now getting sloppy. Leaving himself open. Reyes with a body shot. Reyes is neutralizing Molina’s speed advantage and it’s really something to watch him do. What a pace they’re cutting this round — both throwing and landing. Reyes landing harder. Tarver keeps beating me to what I want to say here. That’s how I know he’s great.

I missed the first two rounds. Scored the third for Reyes.

That kid’s hands are too weak. He’s afraid to land hard for fear of breaking one, especially right—one handed fighter, to all intents and purposes.

Molina vs Reyes Round 4

Both guys really throwing the last two rounds. Molina doing good work to the body, getting himself back in this fight, even if it’s not the way he might want to do it. Reyes thudding on Molina. Reyes with a nice right. Molina backing down on exchanges now, not just from being walked down. Reyes starting to really sit down on his shots. Body shot by Reyes.

Cardinals win the World Series.

I’m not really a baseball fan, but I happened to chance upon last night’s game. So I was cheering for them tonight.

Molina vs Reyes Round 5

Reyes is just trucking in this fight. It’s not flashy and it’s not eye-opening, but Molina just can’t budge him. Reyes is breathing a little heavy, though. Pace might get to him. Not that he’s showing it yet — his right hands are the story of this round, I think. Molina is doing OK, but he’s just not winning this fight. Reyes with a body shot.

Molina vs Reyes Round 6

Left to the body by Reyes. I’m running out of ways to say that Molina isn’t fighting badly, but this is a bad fight for him. Reyes is doing all the more noticeable work — Molina is getting popped frequently. And it’s a good fight, by the way.

Molina vs Reyes Round 7

SO WHO ELSE IS ASSUMING THAT REYES GETS BONED ON THE CARDS?

Molina is doing better this round, and I’m scoring it for him as we wrap it up, but I tried to really just watch this one, and man Reyes is just the far more determined, stronger guy. Still, tip this one to Javier.

Molina vs Reyes Round 8

Molina trying to find a big punch here, fighting wildly. Reyes doesn’t appear to have the gas left to keep pace, and Molina is bouncing around better. I think Reyes has worn himself out pressuring and, unless Molina does something really special, winning this fight. Reyes landing shots, but Molina coming right back. now Reyes closing the round hard. Both guys shoulder to shoulder. Reyes with a right hand. 10 seconds — Reyes throwing his hands, Molina lets his go, and we had a nice fight.

Molina 10-9
Reyes 77-75

I scored it close, but I really think Reyes won this fight.

Similar to the first fight—underdog winning. Gonzalez is more effective than Molina, but not effective enough so far.

What is Tarver talking about? “Virgil Hunter is one of the better trainers that don’t get recognition when you look at the work he’s done with Andre Ward and now Gonzales.” What work with Gonzales? Everyone recognizes Ward is good. And then what?

Tarver has a pronounced preference for trainers who don’t pressure real hard. Although he was pressuring, and rightly so, just then.
