Joel Casamayor Fails Post-Fight Drug Test, Marijuana Found

After a lousy performance in the ring, Joel Casamayor failed his post-fight drug test. (Photo by Harry How/Getty Images)

ESPN.com reports that Joel Casamayor failed his post-fight drug test in Nevada following last Saturday's one-sided loss to Timothy Bradley. Casamayor tested positive for marijuana.

The commission could fine Casamayor up to 100 percent of his $100,000 purse, although that is unlikely. Casamayor had $6,600 withheld from his purse for a child-support claim, which Kizer said the commission would not interfere with.

Casamayor, 40, was initially overweight at the weigh-in (which included a hilarious scene where Casamayor attempted to suck in his stomach on a third attempt) and hasn't been a serious fighter for a while now. Word has been that he's fighting only because he has to, entirely for money. And while a lot of fighters do that, and it's just part of the game, the fact is by testing positive for marijuana, there's a chance he comes out of this with little money, and you have to wonder if he's taking anything very seriously at this point. It's been past time for the major promoters to stop featuring him on big shows, and this whole situation -- showing up overweight, giving little effort in the fight, failing a drug test -- could give him the boot down to lesser cards for good.

So THAT explains his lackluster performance. I was worried he was shot for a minute.

This explains his wanting to fight Pacquiao comments. He MUST be smoking some good stuff.

Not condoning it, but its hardly PED’s is it…..bit harsh if he gets a huge chunk of his purse took.

It’s illegal by U.S. law and it’s banned by the commission. He could have just not done it.

I mean, let me be clear: I don’t give a shit if Joel Casamayor makes Half Baked 2 at his house daily. Makes no difference to me. But he knew he’d be taking a drug test.

I’ve always understood, maybe mistakenly, that it only takes about 6 wks of marijuana abstinence to test negative, so it’s pretty silly that he didn’t. Whole thing couldn’t have mattered to him much, tho I agree with SK above about harshness.

Takes 3-30 days to leave your system, but much faster for athletes who have a higher metabolism than your average Joe. Very easy to pass a drug test if you know one is coming up.

That’s what I thought, 6 weeks was being ultra-conservative, which is what anybody with any sense is if they KNOW they will be peeing in a cup very soon. And believe me, I have nothing at all against weed. But stupid is stupid, that’s a lot of money to lose.

The pounding his head takes in the ring will probably have a far worse side effect than the green.

One thing I always liked about Casamayor was unwillingness to deny he was a dirty fighter. He knew he was and had no problem admitting it. I would not put it pass him to push for the result to be changed from a loss to a NC.

All of it. Gimmie, gimmie, gimmie. I want it all.

Sechew Powell was positive for marijuana after his loss to Latimore in NY, that didn’t get changed to a NC.

It’s the written law of the AC. It doesn’t happen.

It seems absurd to test for herb.

Just stupid. It has no advantageous bearing on a boxing contest.

Very true, imo, but they do, and all he had to do was quit for a little while, not the rest of his life.
