Antonio Margarito will come to New York after the New York State Athletic Commission and Top Rank had some difficulty finding an acceptable opthamologist on short notice, Chris Mannix said on Twitter tonight that a doctor who works with the NHL's New York Rangers will be giving the NYSAC-required exam.
The winds have shifted sharply in the last 24 hours, from it being almost a foregone conclusion that the fight would have to move to Texas, Mississippi or Colorado, to it now seeming as though there's a solid chance it will remain in New York City, at Madison Square Garden. City, state, and venue officials have pleaded their case with the commission to keep the revenue-generating event in the state, and that may be enough pressure to keep the fight where it is has been advertised.
If it's not, and if Margarito isn't up to snuff by the standards of this doctor and the commission, then Top Rank will be in a real jam trying to find a venue if this drags out very far. Considering we're going into a weekend, this might not be resolved until Monday, at which point the scheduled fight, carried by HBO pay-per-view, will be all of 12 days away.
