Chavez vs Manfredo: Live Results and Round-By-Round Coverage (Plus Pacquiao vs Marquez Replay)

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr faces Peter Manfredo Jr tonight on HBO.

Note: Before the main card begins tonight on HBO, Top Rank is streaming the undercard from Reliant Arena in Houston. Click here for more info.

Tonight, HBO has a big block of boxing including a series premiere, a big fight replay, and a live bout for the WBC middleweight title. Here's the lineup:

  1. Cotto vs Margarito 24/7 (10 p.m. EST)
  2. Pacquiao vs Marquez III replay (10:30 p.m. EST)
  3. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr vs Peter Manfredo Jr

Chavez vs Manfredo is the live fight, it's going last. Early estimate for a start time is about 11:15, but it will probably be on at 11:30 or so. Still, I'd recommend tuning in at 11 if you aren't interested in seeing the Pacquiao vs Marquez replay, and just waiting it out from there. Mute may help.

Chavez (43-0-1, 30 KO) is the heavy favorite tonight against Manfredo (37-6, 20 KO), and the fight has met some criticism as an HBO main event. Chavez, 25, made his HBO debut in June, defeating Sebastian Zbik to win that WBC belt. He did good ratings, so he's back. But Manfredo being approved as an HBO opponent is also being questioned, and really, it's fair enough.

Still, I'm expecting an entertaining, fun fight to watch. Neither of them are "action stars," but they're both guys who come to fight and it could get interesting if Manfredo is really on his game.

Margarito was “most avoided man in boxing” according to the narrative. Funny, I remember him losing to Williams 1 yr before Cotto fight.

Great point. Although I wonder if Margarito may be shot after the beating he took from Manny, and that therefore we may be being sold a bill of goods. Can’t go wrong with the undercard though.

My latest opinion of Pac/Marq is that I don’t enjoy the fights

by davecwright on Nov 19, 2011 10:47 PM EST reply actions

I enjoy tactical, high-level boxing, so I enjoy them. But the fights don’t compare in pure action to the three best trilogies of the new century (Barrera-Morales, Ward-Gatti, Vazquez-Marquez), IMO.

I've enjoyed the odd tactical fight, myself.

For instance, I’m almost embarrassed to say I remember enjoying watching Haye v Valuev, of all things. Maybe mostly out of joy to see someone put that abomination to pasture…

I’ll be the first to say I have an irrational indifference to this rivalry. I just don’t find the fights interesting.

Interesting to see how Joltin’ Jim (God I hope that sticks: well started, Scott) looks right at his colleagues to set them up. Maybe he has more control than we think and Kellerman’s quiet spell (commented on last week, I think?) was Joltin’ imposing his iron will.

As someone coming incredibly late to the party...

Having just seen Pacquiao-Maquez III for the first time, I thought it was a remarkably even fight. If given the opportunity to score the fight as a whole, I’d give it to Marquez, but on the running round by rond scorecard in my head, I scored it 115-114 for Pacquiao. Marquez’s rounds just looked better than most of Pacquiao’s.

Chavez vs Manfredo Round 1

Why didn’t Papa praise Manfredo for being way out in the middle of the ring before the bell? That already puts him up 10-9 IMO.

Manfredo trying to jab his way in. Chavez with a shot to the belly, a jab. Manfredo witha left hook blocked. Chavez’s blocked as well. Chavez gets him on the ropes and lays in two body shots. Chavez looking already like the much harder puncher. He’s got real snap early. Manfredo with a body shot, not a lot on it. Manfredo’s speed has really gone away. Double jab from Manfredo gets in. Tentative thus far. Chavez feeling him out, Manfredo not committing to anything big. Chavez back to the body, then upstairs and gets a little left past the gloves.

Chavez 10-9

Chavez vs Manfredo Round 2

Chavez blocks two shots to start the round. Chavez short on his jab, not really leaning into it. Chavez gets him to the ropes, Manfredo blocks some shots but gets physically rocked around a bit. Chavez left hook blocked. Neither exactly accurate thus far.

Jab to the body, hook to the body from Chavez. Those are going to add up. Counter right from JCC, clips Manfredo. Another one gets in better. Manfredo having trouble landing clean. Left hook from Chavez rattles Manfredo around, even though it’s blocked. Same happens again a moment later. He’s a much, much bigger puncher. Manfredo opens up with a few little shots, those partially blocked. Lead right from Chavez blocked. Counter shot in from Chavez. Jab to the body again.

Chavez pretty well dominating this fight, I think. Chavez looking for counters when Manfredo lets his hands go, because Peter is really open to be countered. Chavez gets him near the end of the round.

Chavez vs Manfredo Round 3

Manfredo trying to get himself going a little to start the round, but can’t land clean and then finds himself out of range. Good shot from Chavez with the right hand. Chavez starting to really drill him with some shots. He’s clearly a better fighter, countering really well, boxing pretty well. Right from Manfredo, Chavez’s comes back at the same time. Manfredo to the body. Manfredo starting to have some trigger issues. Manfredo trying to pressure, Chavez fighting going back now. Fight being booed a bit.

Laurence Cole calls time to fix the tape on Manfredo’s glove. Manfredo corner says they don’t have scissors, which gives Manfredo more time.

They trade a little to end the round. Manfredo with a late shot, but he was throwing when the bell sounded. Fair accident.

HEY SHUT UP HAROLD THERE’S A BRAWL GOING ON NOW! Manfredo backed down a bit there, and he slows it down. He’s trying to fight. He’s giving it what he’s got. Big shot from Chavez. Now they throw wild shots again. Chavez very happy to trade with Manfredo. Body shot from Manfredo, and then a right upstairs. This pressure is helping Manfredo. Right hand Manfredo! And another one! Chavez calls him on! Chavez laying on the ropes. BIG shot Manfredo!

hell yes!

Big right from Chavez! Chavez working his way around the ring again. Manfredo has slowed Chavez down with some body shots and a willingness to engage. Body shot again by Manfredo. Chavez’s nose bleeding. They trade again!

typo

I mean give it a rest. Arum makes money for his fighters so they are for the most part following his lead. When he fails to do so, they leave.

In the case of Cotto (they found abd groomed him into a star). Juanma (the same), Manny (making him a fortune and global brand) and Chavez jr. (who everyone knows is a box office name, nothing more).

If you are making money in a partnership or a contract, you going to bite the hand that feeds you?

Do you honestly think athletes , boxers in particular, can navigate the business of boxing and do it themselves better that their promoters?

You don’t even have to begin answering that question…it’s that rhetorical.

I should give it a rest? Dude, I think you’re probably related to someone at Top Rank. I’m not even kidding.

I understand he makes money… I get it. If that’s all these fighters care about, then fine, yes, they are with the right guy. You’re right.

And the thing is, I wasn’t even talking to you, I know already that you and I speak a different language: you speak money, I speak something else entirely. So I don’t even try to talk to you about this topic. I was answering someone else.

My point is that his handlers can’t get him a single dollar outside of the ring. Long term endorsement money

Nor can he.

He’s doing a great job with his brand BTW. He should thank Mayweather Productions for building him into the biggest name in sports with the smallest percentage of endorsements, bar none.

Bravo.

No comment. Floyd is on a path to be known for what he might or could have been; not what he did.

Meanwhile, Cotto ain’t ducking anyone. Nor did Margarito (who fought fighters from every company). Nor did Manny who had no compelling reason to re-match his nemesis Marquez.

Floyd ‘retired’ before re-matching Oscar. And he skirted so many names my fingers are hurting.

Plus…..he has only fought GBP fighters in years. Talk about company men.

Yeah all true if you were president of boxing history.

I have no problem, saying everything u just said as false.

None of then fighters u listed are considered p4p fighters. Hall of fame sure, actually scratch that for Margo… I think tainted gloves will keep him out of those circles.

Floyd’s name has been mentioned in p4p for over a decade. His style and mastered skills will keep him there. Look at Ali’s legacy, the brown bomber’s, Tyson as a matter of fact. People remember your fights, not stupid sound bites drummed up by the media and silly fanboys.

by Clove_art on Nov 20, 2011 12:45 AM EST up reply actions

I was a fan of those men (Louis, Ali, Frazier, Mike Tyson) and Floyd will recede into history without any of their definition.

They were all p4p fighters at welter when Floyd arrived..and retired .

He was a spectacular lightweight. He has not fought the many of the best at welterweight sincen he arrived. Now it is little late.

He should have fought Cotto after Hatton for me. Too many fights left unfought. But when he fights, he generally looks awesome, even if I do find the ‘Money Mayweather’ character annoying as hell.

No doubt IM mind. He could have beat most all of the best of his time…but he chose to match himself too carefully for my, and many observers, taste.

Paul Williams says hi, as does Floyd under the Top Rank banner. Margarito sure didn’t have much motivation for avenging his loss to Williams either and took on a seemingly easier fight against Mosley instead.

Nor did Manny who had no compelling reason to re-match his nemesis Marquez.
If he had no compelling reason in 2008-2011, then there shouldn’t be any compelling reason for a fourth fight to take precedence over Mayweather. Sure seems like Bob feels differently however.
Floyd ‘retired’ before re-matching Oscar.
Really? Floyd decisively won and there wasn’t much interest in it anyway. The only close fight Floyd has ever had, he immediately gave the guy a rematch and left no doubt (that is, he didn’t make Castillo come in above his most comfortable weight, nor did he wait around for him to age 4 years).

by bachwards on Nov 20, 2011 12:48 AM EST up reply actions

plus, like how everyone forgets that Floyd fought with a broken hand in that first fight will Castillo.

And he lost that fight, and people thought Floyd lost his fight w/ Castillo… and they both won their rematches… so whats ur point?

by Clove_art on Nov 20, 2011 1:04 AM EST up reply actions

Margarito lost to Williams and then fought GB’s Shane Mosley and lost. Two fighters. Two seperate promoters. Both tough fights. No ducking for Tony.

Arum sees money. If the PPV numbers are good, I imagine they will attempt to make that fight again some time. Mexico would want it. Manny would do it. No duck.

Floyd won a split decision. Yes he won. The he ’retired" lol.

Castillo was great. Since then no dice. BTW, do you know who his promoter was when he fought that one and only rematch. I can’t recall. Seriuosly.

He made plenty of guys, including Marquez, meet him a weight of his choosing. then did what he wanted with impunity.

Williams was clearly more highly regarded at 147 before Margarito-Mosley and had repeatedly called him out. Margarito instead elected to take on the easier opponent who had just looked like garbage against Mayorga.

Arum sees money. If the PPV numbers are good, I imagine they will attempt to make that fight again some time. Mexico would want it. Manny would do it. No duck.
So does Floyd. Economic explanations either work for both or neither. You can’t accuse Floyd of ducking people when economic reasons exist for him and yet excuse certain fights involving Top Rank guys from not taking place on the basis of economic reasons.
Floyd won a split decision. Yes he won. The he ’retired" lol.
It was a clear win and the cards were way closer than the fight. The retirement did not occur post-Oscar, but post-Hatton.
Castillo was great. Since then no dice. BTW, do you know who his promoter was when he fought that one and only rematch. I can’t recall. Seriuosly.
He made plenty of guys, including Marquez, meet him a weight of his choosing. then did what he wanted with impunity.
But of course, I’m not making the claim that Floyd is honorable or has never ducked anyone or that his catchweight with Marquez was justified. I’m making the claim that Top Rank fighters are hardly more noble.

Type the words Floyd and Duck into a google search

Then type in Cotto.

Try Margarito.

Juanma.

Let me knopw how you do?

I could type in Floyd and ‘cabbage’ and get more results than Cotto and ‘cabbage’. Does that mean anything other than Floyd is more talked about online?

You could. You could search ‘garbage’ as well. Or ‘cribbage’. But try ‘duck’

The conversation here is about whether company men are ducking more than independents.

Cotto, Margarito, Juanma in particular.
And Floyd.

For me its not really company men v independents. Its Golden Boy v Top Rank, or Mayweather v Bob Arum.

I don’t think ‘ducking’ comes into it. Its a mixture of ego and money.
