Here's footage of George Groves' media workout ahead of his British super middleweight title defense against Paul Smith on Saturday. The fight will be the featured undercard bout on the Katsidis vs Burns bill at Wembley Arena, televised by BoxNation.
As much as I like Groves -- and I like him plenty, and think he'll be a long-term player in the division -- I think this could be a trap fight for him. He's coming off the big win over James DeGale on May 21, he's just signed with Frank Warren, and he's feeling comfortable and complacent, Smith is good enough to give him more than he's bargained for.
Groves (13-0, 10 KO) has shown vulnerabilities in the past. Smith (31-2, 17 KO) is a former British champion himself, and while he was stopped by DeGale in a fairly one-sided fight in December 2010, this could be more about styles, and about how hungry Groves remains, and how seriously he's taking this fight.
Now I have no reason to believe that Groves will take Smith lightly, but stranger things have definitely happened. I'm quite interested to see this fight play out. If Groves is dialed in, it could be another impressive win for the 23-year-old from Hammersmith.
