Antonio Margarito is in New York for his commission-mandated physical exam, which will focus on his surgically-repaired right eye. Dan Rafael of ESPN.com says that he has an appointment today at 3:45 p.m. EST, and the New York State Athletic Commission will make their final decision on whether or not to give Margarito a license on Tuesday.
So we're pretty close to a final decision here. If you've missed "24/7" (and again, watch it) and you missed our screen shots of Margarito's eye previously, here they are again:
All signs right now are pointing to the fight moving. Top Rank officials are in Denver today to meet with the representatives from the Pepsi Center, and Phoenix's US Airways Arena is also in the running. It just doesn't look likely that this fight will stay at Madison Square Garden. Pretty much all the chatter out there right now is doubtful that New York will license Margarito.
Why they can't stick around a couple of extra hours and just get the information from the doctor today, and then make their decision, is another story. It's a time-sensitive matter. But that's what you get dealing with bureaucrats. Am I right, Ron Swanson?
