Pacquiao vs Marquez: Marquez Coach Threatens Lawsuit, Challenges Team Pacquiao

Controversial conditioning coach Angel Hernandez, a.k.a. Angel "Memo" Heredia, has taken Alex Ariza to task and threatened a lawsuit against the Team Pacquiao member, which further amps up this whole mess. From Ryan Maquiñana and Alex G. Martinez:

"I would like to say through this medium and the public that logically, we are preparing a lawsuit for defamation against Mr. Alex Ariza," Hernandez said, his words translated from Spanish.  "On his behalf, the declarations he has made are very direct. I think they’re very prejudicial not just with respect toward the image of Juan Manuel Marquez, but for mine as his physical trainer."

... "... Alex, I think the only person here who has doubts are you and Manny, because in the past people have solicited proof a thousand times to give blood and urine tests, and you have never wanted to do them.

"Well, here I believe that this is the opportunity to maybe for once to disprove the accusations against Pacquiao. And honestly, the accusations presented on their behalf are sort of sad, no, because no one here has said anything negative about Pacquiao."

Well, here we go. It was really only a matter of time before this got out of hand, and it looks like it's headed that way. There's only so much that Bob Arum and Top Rank can control with this, and though Bob tried to dismiss any skepticism of Hernandez/Heredia in a conference call yesterday, I think this just might be spiraling out of his control.

Five days ago, this was just a fight.

HERNANDEZ

Let’s keep the focus on the fighters,it was a misstep for the Marquez camp to hire this dude so they shouldn’t be surprised by the outrage. Marquez is an honorable champ and he doesn’t need roids, same with Pacman. This fight will be determined on skill and
will, any notion that either fighter would go to pharmacy is ridiculous. Nuff said!!!

No it isn’t. Nuff not said.

Well, I hope you’re right about that. They’re two of my favorite fighters.

But hoping and knowing are two different things.

Scott, not sure what “spiraling out of control” means. Too late to call off the fight, I don’t think we have to worry about that. Does it mean the whole issue is going to get lots more buzz? Probably. Do I think that’s a bad thing? No.

There could be a backlash after the fight tho. Kinda like the homerun race of Bonds, Sosa, and McGuire. More questions more acquisitions, so on and so forth.

Kinda interesting how 24/7 will portray this, this week.

I’m thinking more questions and more accusations is uncomfortable, but not a bad development just the same.

Heads in the sand too long, especially (“don’t spoil it for me, I love it too much”) myself.

I think that there are a couple of scenarios that could take place after the fight:

1) Pacquiao wins no matter the way and nothing else happens.

2) The unthinkable happens and Marquez KOs Pacquiao
Here is where things get interesing. Initially, when I heard about Heredia’s past I though, well if Marquez by some chance KOs Pacquiao, everyone will suggests that he was on something given that none of the bigger guys that Pacquiao has faced recently was able to stop him, and some were stopped or nearly stopped by him, so Marquez even in victory would be denided (rightly or wrongly who knows) of what he desires the most, which is to get recognition for beating Pacquiao. However, by having come out immediately saying, well, here I am test whatever you want to test, he basically sent the ball back to Pacquiao’s camp, who basically said nothing, then if somehow he wins, if anyone cries wolf after the fact, Marquez can know say, your guys were the ones who wanted no tests, so don’t come crying now.

3) If it’s a decision win for either fighter what happens (scenario 1 or 2) will depend or how much damage Marquez takes and dishes, since most people think he won’t last much against Manny.

Good analysis, Those are all plausible but it will still irk me, if JMM finds a way to actually beat Manny. And in victory gets tormented for it. That would be just sad, but i wouldn’t put it past anyone. Especially, having Manny’s boyfriends calling the fight (Lampley and Merchant).

Scott, not sure what "spiraling out of control" means.

Arum clearly wanted to nip this shit in the bud. That’s not happening. He has zero control over Ariza or Hernandez/Heredia. Those guys are gonna do what they have to do.

Ah. You mean out of Arum’s control. Duh, didn’t get it.

This was what I was trying to explain on the original thread. The “no comments” and other jackassery sounded to me like a vain attempt to cutoff a lawsuit.

So he starts talking about how Ariza was making him out to sound bad and then goes on to call out Pac to do the tests. Bit like the pot calling the kettle black
