Katsidis vs Burns: Live Results and Round-By-Round Coverage

Ricky Burns and Michael Katsidis take the ring this afternoon in London. (Photo by Dean Mouhtaropoulos/Getty Images)

Today at 3 p.m. EDT on BoxNation from the United Kingdom, Michael Katsidis and Ricky Burns go head-to-head in a lightweight 12-rounder from Wembley Arena in London.

Katsidis (28-4, 23 KO) is looking to up his mark to 3-0 on trips to the U.K., where he's previously stopped Graham Earl and Kevin Mitchell. But Burns (32-2, 9 KO) is picking up some media steam as a potential upset special, with the belief that his craftiness and boxing skills could make him a very tough match for the shop-worn Katsidis.

George Groves (13-0, 10 KO) will defend his British and Commonwealth super middleweight titles in the co-feature against Paul Smith (31-2, 17 KO), and Billy Joe Saunders (10-0, 7 KO) looks to pick up his first pro belt on the broadcast, too, as he aims to grab the Southern Area middleweight title against Gary Boulden (5-2-2, 0 KO).

We'll have round-by-round coverage of each fight, with immediate post-fight analysis during and after the card. Join us!

The threads make everything vastly better, no matter how good it is to begin with.

I'm new here and don't make every fight thread

But I agree with drrck, the threads make even boring fights leagues better than they would have been. I wish there was a boxing fans bar somewhere in Vegas where I could have similar conversations..

Sweet Science had it right. It would be terrible if I had to choose between live stream and BLH RBR.

Oh, boy. I love Burns’ style and technical skill, but I can’t help but expect Katsidis to overwhelm him.

I can see it. It all depends on how far gone Katsidis is. I think we all agree he’s shop-worn at best, and not the fighter he was a few years ago. If he’s really gone, Burns will outbox him. If it goes 12, and Katsidis doesn’t score a few knockdowns, I think there’s almost no way Burns can lose unless he’s just relentlessly negative.

If katsidis can bring pressure early, he can really make it a long night for burns.

by Quickhooks on Nov 5, 2011 1:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m picking Katsidis because I think he’s got just enough left to overwhelm Burns physically. I could even see Katsidis really blitzing him and taking him out in short order, a la Mitchell.

I hope you’re right, because Burns is my kind of fighter. But … well, I’ve already said it.

I've never used BoxNation

Wondering what the deal for watching this card from the states would be, if I could find it online for a small fee, a link to that would be good, not looking for anything illegal of course.
I’ve heard good things about Groves, and love watching a good scrap at at 167. The main event I think promises to be one oif my favorite kinds of fights, that of the come forward pressure fighter kats vs. the crafty defensive boxer burns. Hopefully this train will get me home soon so I can watch and not have to type on this tiny phone keyboard.

Cheers to a good day of fights fellas!

I've heard good things about Groves.

But I don’t get a ton of time to watch. But I’ve seen both Burns and Katsidis, mostly Katsidis getting it handed to him, but even in those fights, he has his moments.

That’s very generous of you DrRck. :)
I know what you mean though. He has that classic stand up, hands high style. Does nothing great but almost everything well, IMO.

I was thinking of range of technique, movement, speed, and reflexes. No zing, though.

But then, I also liked Ken Buchanan quite a lot.

by DrRck on Nov 5, 2011 2:04 PM EDT up reply actions

You don't always need the zing.

Especially with a little defensive slickness or a range of other skills. Zing is a great cover for a lack of other abilities though. Makes me think of James Toney against Michael Nunn, since James Toney has been getting so much run for his recent beating.

by Quickhooks on Nov 5, 2011 2:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Not that Toney didn't have other skills.

He had plenty in his prime in other fights, he just didn’t have much until he went bang that night against Nunn.

by Quickhooks on Nov 5, 2011 2:08 PM EDT up reply actions

High guard defense is the most technically sound defense.

The problem most people have with it is that when employed improperly or unskillfully, it is very hard to counterpunch from a high guard defense. What a lot of people mean by classic boxer, is that they counterpunch well from high guard, which is something I would like a lot :).

Lots of sport on tv today

I just watched the Aussies beat us (England) at rugby (again). We played quite well for once this time though and it was a good, entertaining game.
I have now got boxing, the UFC, the Breeder’s Cup and the NFL preview show Total Access to flick through, along with catching the Silaykh fight that i missed last night on replay.
I’m certainly not complaining. :)
Boxing definitely takes priority though.

My favorite Goldberg line to hate is...

when one fighter has a ground/wrestling/bjj style and when the other is boxer/striker/kick boxer and he says about the most obvious thing you could ever here:

“Well the outcome of this fight is whether it stays standing or fighter x can get it to the ground.”

I’m like, “No shit Sherlock, that’s MMA one zero fucking one!” No one needs to be reminded of that.

I like Rogan’s enthusiasm (but don’t care for the yelling).

You can tell he knows the game, especially the BJJ and wrestling stuff, but have you heard some of the stuff he says about boxing and boxing’s great figthers?
He has little clue what he’s talking about when it comes to the sweet science, imo.
I suppose that’s what you get when you commentate on a “jack of all trades” kind of sport.

by Matt Mosley on Nov 5, 2011 2:36 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t mean this to be combative toward MMA folks, but it’s a symptom of the sport and many of the people who commentate and follow it. Everyone has opinions on boxing, and often they’ll say “I love boxing!” but it’s clear they don’t follow the sport much at all.

Well that’s the nature of the “mixed” part of it, I read here in this boxing forum that Rogan knows a lot about grappling, but in my BJJ classes everyone complains about some of the stupid things Rogan says, despite him being a brown belt!

When these styles mix, they’re never in their “pure” form that’s what makes the sport great, but it’s also what makes me watch grappling tournaments and watch boxing too. I like both their pure and “mixed forms”. Frankie Edgar and Dos Santos are great boxers when considering the “mixed” form.

Also, have you seen this thing Goldberg initiates at the end of each show when they are both on camera?

Hi folks. I’m betting on upsets today, at least with Burns and later with Kirkland. I actually think Angulo is more likely to win, but at 3 to 1, it seems like a good bet to me. I think GJ is a live dog against Bute too, but I don’t see Johnson getting the nod in Canada.

In American college football, I am rooting (but not that hopeful) for an upset in the Alabama vs. LSU game. I definitely NOT hoping for an upset in the Nebraska vs. Northwestern game, though.

But I don’t think Kirkland will go down quickly. He’ll be prepared for Angulo’s power. His chin isn’t great, but to me it seems like the Ishida fight was an aberration. Joel Julio has decent power, and he couldn’t hurt Kirkland, for instance.

Besides, Smith is hardly a puncher.

I just had a small wager on these:

Burns to win.
Groves by decision
Bute by decision
Angulo to win
Quillin to win.
+
Chris Leben to beat Mark Munoz in UFC 138.

Leben and Burns being the underdogs bumped the odds up but i got almost 50-1 for that accumulator/parlay.
It’s a bit of fun.

I usually don’t bother with MMA because i’m not clued up enough on it, but i noticed quite a lot of people had Leben down as a live dog and i wanted to increase the odds so i went for it.
I’m not overly confident in that pick though, or the Burns one to be honest.

If you are looking to see if anyone has replied to your comments and you don’t want to dig around and find all of the old threads where you originally posted, just click on your nameplate in the upper left, and it will list your comments and tell you if anyone has replied. Handy.

Apparently Burns vs Katsidis will be going on second from the top, before Groves vs Smith. It’s like a WWF card in 1988 where they put Hogan on fourth and let the Rockers and Hart Foundation close the show so that people don’t go away watching a Hulk Hogan match.

Boulden vs Saunders Round 1

Saunders coming at him right off. Boulden trying to keep his hands high. Saunders not landing a lot, but he’s the one pressing the action. Just letting his hands fly, but not landing. Body shot from Saunders, he can throw those with power. Right hook from Saunders gets in. Boulden shooting back some rights, but not close to landing them.

Boulden vs Saunders Round 2

Saunders is just bossing the hell out of this thing. Boulden is finding it more and more difficult to keep Saunders off of him. Left to the body gets in. That’s really probably Billy Joe’s best punch. Counter rights from Boulden, about all he’s got here. Little shoulder tackle from Saunders puts Boulden down, but he’s fine.

Boulden vs Saunders Round 4

Nice left from Saunders, and now he’s pressing. He’s going for the kill. Boulden staggering around the ring and ties him up. Saunders really head-hunting. Now he backs off, takes his foot off the gas. Boulden just trying to find some kind of breathing room. Now Boulden throwing, not landing, and perhaps the best work he’s doing, moving around the ring and making Saunders work to find him. It’s something, anyway.

Bolden hits his own gloves more than he actually hits Saunders. But this is the sort of thing I was saying. What about Wlad’s chin?
Adjustments can be made. You just need a good trainer.

by Matt Mosley on Nov 5, 2011 5:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Plus

“chin” is as much about heart and determination as it is about physical capabilities, imo.
If it doesn’t kill you (or KO you) it makes you stronger, sometimes.
They say you can’t add muscles to your chin, and i agree.
But you can build your mental strength, durability and fitness.

by Matt Mosley on Nov 5, 2011 5:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Not to mention toughness, both physical and mental.

by Matt Mosley on Nov 5, 2011 5:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Honestly

I don’t think Price has got it in him. As you say, you have to want to get stronger, to say to yourself…. I am going to win this no matter what..

Then I look at Fury, and I see the opposite. He is slightly more limited skill wise, but I think he more than makes up for it with his heart and durability.

by Sweet science on Nov 5, 2011 5:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Fury definitely has the toughness, heart and mental strength.
That and his size/reach, more than anything will get him to a pretty good level, imo.

by Matt Mosley on Nov 5, 2011 5:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, he’s young and a work in progress.
Working with Manny Steward won’t have done him any harm.

by Matt Mosley on Nov 5, 2011 5:23 PM EDT up reply actions

I won’t exactly be betting on Price being the next world champ or anything but i know he has good skills and power.
More so than Fury, imo.
I would pick Fury to beat him though, because i think Fury could take his shots, but that he would eventually get to Price.

by Matt Mosley on Nov 5, 2011 5:19 PM EDT up reply actions

True

Wlad has perfected the art of protecting his chin. When he does take punches he is moving backwards instead of coming onto the punches

by Sweet science on Nov 5, 2011 5:10 PM EDT up reply actions

by Dave Oakes on Nov 5, 2011 5:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I do too.
If Wlad was forces to fight with someone who could actually fight and could make him fight, it’s very possible he can’t stand the heat and he gets taken out.

Boulden has turned this into a bit of a snoozer, to be honest, but what else was he supposed to do? He’s clearly outclassed here so this is the best he could do. Another uppercut gets in there and Saunders wants the stoppage. He doesn’t want to go the full ten here. Right hook gets Boulden again. Boulden still doing a good job not getting hit flush very often. Uppercut again lands, this time with the right hand. Boulden tying up. Right and a FLUSH left. Big left again! Boulden getting hammered now. 80 seconds left. Tough kid, but he’s now getting overwhelmed. Left to the body from Saunders. Boulden hanging on. He might make the final bell — probably will with 30 seconds to go. Crowd booing but whatever.

Katsidis vs Burns Round 1

Katsidis pressuring and chasing right away. Swinging wide right hands. Banging to the body with Burns’ hands up high. First minute is all Katsidis. Burns chops a right hand in. Uppercut from Burns lands nicely. Burns getting some distance now and Katsidis easing up. Think he might have been looking to see if he could catch Burns very cold.

Katsidis puts him on the ropes, bangs but gets blocked, and Burns wrestles his way off. Katsidis with another charge. Really tearing to the body, not a bad idea. He’ll need to take Burns’ legs away. Burns boxing nicely, and not looking at all panicked when Katsidis rushes him. Right hand from Burns. Little counter shots sneaking in. I thought Burns overall did the better work here.

Katsidis vs Burns Round 2

Burns with a nice right hand. Controlling distance to start the round. Katsidis is just bull-rushing him. If he can catch him, it’ll work, but otherwise it’s a strategy easily neutralized, and Burns is doing nicely so far. Right hand by Burns, and then an uppercut just misses. Burns keeping distance very well — he’s doing everything exactly right, and he looks VERY confident in there. Throwing meaningful right hands behind his jab. Michael coming in, getting close, and then not throwing. This is what we saw him do against Marquez after the first few rounds, too. Katsidis to the body now as he gets Burns on the ropes.

Katsidis vs Burns Round 3

Katsidis has him on the ropes, but Burns cuonters off with a nice uppercut. And another one. that punch is there, but then most punches are with Katsidis. MK continues to bull right at him. Another uppercut gets in. Burns again with the uppercut. It’s all pressure and little else from Katsidis, and he’s being picked apart with counters. Katsidis may be digging hard enough to break Burns down eventually, but he’s going to be losing the fight until then. Burns just slapping him around at points, making him look bad. Burns digs a left hook to the body. Katsidis popped again and his head snaps back. Left hook to the body again by Burns. Katsidis just not landing enough with all the pressure. He looks slow, a bit trigger-shy (even throwing), and he’s not getting big shots in.

Katsidis vs Burns Round 4

Katsidis with a right. Burns jabbing, then swings wildly. Left hook and a right from Burns, neither land. Katsidis pushing him to the ropes once again. Now trying to measure him. Just trying to break him right the hell down. Burns with wide shots that cuff Katsidis a bit. Katsidis not getting hit with quite as many big shots this round. Left to the body, left upstairs from Burns. Burns shoots an uppercut inside, Katsidis gets to the body. Commentator wonders if shots that didn’t look low were low. Katsidis gets him on the ropes and tries desperately to feint him into opening up, but it doesn’t happen. Better round for Katsidis, but I still give it to Burns. Katsidis with a bit of a late shot after the bell.

Burns coming out in the fifth leading the action, jabbing and firing his right hand. Nothing special, but you don’t need special with Katsidis, just patient and intelligent. Burns has that. Katsidis just FIRES right hands with Burns on the ropes, maybe one of the few got through the guard a bit. Katsidis to the body, Burns gets back. Katsidis not pushing him to the ropes as much in this round. Now he gets him there, and a nice uppercut gets in. Burns comes back with counters and gets off, but Katsidis is putting on some good pressure now, not just pressure. And Katsidis to his credit, is sticking with the game plan. Burns to the body. Burns badly misses a wild left hook. Nasty body shots from Katsidis, and Burns wrestles him across the ring. Referee just lets them go.

Hey, good refereeing. Just now noticed him.

Burns vs Katsidis Round 6

Burns pressing Katsidis to the ropes to start this round, and Katsidis wings a left hook counter that scrapes Burns. Back to the more natural dynamic after that, but Burns spins Katsidis around and they jostle a bit. Burns throwing the jab to control the fight again. Katsidis slowing down big-time this round. Hook to the body from Burns. Katsidis pounds the body on the ropes again. Right hands from Katsidis again, one lands nicely. Uppercut from Katsidis. Winnable round with 30 seconds left. Right hand from Burns. Katsidis again throwing countless right hands on the ropes, none getting in. He has just an awful right hand. Burns with a shot upstairs, then a hook to the body, then the jab.

Burns vs Katsidis Round 7

Burns’ tape comes loose in the first minute, quick break. Katsidis just constantly moving forward. Katsidis popping to the body, little peppering shots that mean little but mean a little. Burns HAMMERING to the body. Burns with one shot better than all those that Katsidis landed in there. Katsidis trying to break down the guard. He’s chasing well and Burns isn’t doing a lot this round. Katsidis pushes him to the ropes again, unloads, Burns defends well. Katsidis to the body, those are landing. Shots upstairs, those are not. Burns taking a round off, perhaps. Not doing a lot. Nice left hook from Burns in counter. Katsidis comes back with a right.

Burns vs Katsidis Round 8

Katsidis’ pressure seems to be worrying Burns just a tick more right now. But Burns firing those counters again. Still, he can’t push Katsidis back no matter what he does. Katsidis pouring it on on the ropes again. tape loose on Burns again, another quick break. Katsidis with a left. Boy he’s REALLY bringing it the last two rounds. Not all of this is getting in, of course, but Burns is looking uncomfortable more and more. Burns with some nice shots to the body. But nothing is backing Katsidis down. I don’t think Burns can really hurt him at all. Right from Burns, but then Katsidis just pushes him right back to the ropes. Burns back to the body again. Katsidis is a man’s man and walks through it. I mean these are good punches — Burns is again landing good, clean shots in the last half of the round.

Katsidis vs Burns Round 9

Burns back to the jab, then finds that right uppercut again. Burns trying to stay off the ropes more this round, maybe not as comfortable countering off as he was earlier. He’s also having a very easy time at center ring, or at least a much easier time than he is with his back to the ropes. Burns with a hard body shot. Body shots from Katsids, thudding shots. Burns slowing down now as Katsidis rips away to the body. Burns back to the body. This is a hard round right here. These guys are fighting like hell. Katsidis going through Burns’ offense, but Burns still landing. Uppercut, and then a left hook. Katsidis puts him right back on the ropes. Burns gets the momentum back.

Katsidis vs Burns Round 10

Katsidis continues to just absolutely pour on the pressure, and he’s dominating the opening moments of this round and shutting Burns down. Left hook from Katsidis, but not a lot on it. Series of them afterward. He’s bullying the shit out of Ricky Burns this round, and Burns looks really uncomfortable. Left hook to the body by Burns. HARD left hook from Katsidis shakes Burns a little bit. That was the first really, really clean left hook he’s gotten to the head in a while. Burns being backed down and physically overwhelmed this round. Burns is really being taken into DUN DUN DUNNNNNNN THE DEEEEEEP WATEEEEERS. I mean this round is all Katsidis. A couple uppercuts from Burns, but Burns is having serious issues. Katsidis is fighting his ass off. Tape was loose for a while, and finally Burns gets a break when the action slows for a second. Big Katsidis round.

Katsidis storms at him again to start this round. The man is a machine, and he may not be the guy he was a few years ago, but he’s a couple steps from shot. His gas tank has been incredible with this relentless pressure.

Burns trying to jab. Katsidis gets him right back on the ropes. Burns not countering as much anymore in those situations, more waiting for a moment to get out with his feet. Body shot from Burns. Katsidis not landing a lot this round, but then neither is Burns. More from Burns so far though. A minute to go. Good counter right from Burns. Katsidis vs Burns Round 12

Katsidis REALLY coming hard now, throwing everything he’s got with both hands as Burns tries to box. Burns complains of a shot to the back of the head. Katsidis warned. Burns trying to tie him up. I think Burns believes this is in the bag. Burns on his bike. Katsidis digs to the body again, Burns ties him up and complains again of Katsidis going to the back of the head. Ref mostly ignores this one. Right hand from Katsidis, Burns covers up again, ties him up again, and wrestles off the ropes. Just trying to kill time. Burns jabbing to keep Katsidis at bay as long as he can, then tying him up when he gets him to the ropes. Glove tape is loose once again. Nice shot from Burns, but Katsidis just rolling right at him. Quick break to fix the load of tape dangling.

30 seconds to go!

Katsidis throwing everything he can. Burns with a little right. Katsidis giong for broke. He takes the round and fights through the bell, but that’s just the way it is.

Yeah, I know

You could even make a pretty good argument for a draw here. But the hometown guy always gets a few extra rounds.

Groves vs Smith Round 1

Groves twitchy to start, as he will be. When he’s about 35 that’s gonna really be bad. He’ll look like Shane Mosley on steroids. I mean. Oops.

(Mosley didn’t do steroids, just EPO.)

Anyway, Smith looking to land big shots in counter, and did get a right hand in early. Groves misses a right. Very much a feeling-out round. Groves with a right late, Smith fires away. Groves jabbing. Good left hook by Smith near the bell. That could have been trouble.

Groves 10-9, but a tight round
