Bute vs Johnson: Live Results and Round-By-Round Coverage

Lucian Bute and Glen Johnson battle for the IBF super middleweight title tonight in Quebec City.

Tonight at 9 p.m. EDT on Showtime (U.S.), BoxNation (U.K.) and Bell PPV (Canada, $59.95 (!)), Lucian Bute will defend his IBF super middleweight title against veteran Glen Johnson. In the co-feature, junior welterweights Pier Olivier Cote and Jorge Luis Teron will do battle.

Bute (29-0, 24 KO) is taking arguably the toughest fight of his career to date. Though Johnson (51-15-2, 35 KO) is 42 years old, he's still a strong contender at 168 pounds, and is a step up from Bute's opponents to date.

Bute is widely favored by oddsmakers, but that could be a misreading of this matchup. Johnson is coming off of a loss to Carl Froch, but styles make fights, and Glen's ability to fight well inside could be a major test for Bute this evening.

We'll have live coverage of both fights tonight, provided by myself, but don't forget that we'll also be covering the HBO show, led by Andrew Fruman, in another post that will be up shortly. Those interested will be able to catch this show and the HBO main event.

Damn, 1087 posts on the previous thread. I know it’s not a record-breaker, but it’s pretty damn high!

Not often brit cards do this well though is it?

I guess today is a good boxing weekend. What with Kirkland Angulo and Bute Johnson fighting later. And Katsidis is never in a dull fight so I guess that helped

No this may have been all-time best for a UK card.

TBH I expect bigger turnouts anyway

BLH is still going to grow and grow.

I remember you saying Mayweather was in Manny’s league when it came to traffic in September, something Manny ussually trumps him on. I expect bigger numbers for the Marquez Manny fight than before if im being honest.

BTW, Love the new writers and staff Scott.

That about reflected the actual interest though. Christ, I still can’t get over getting thrown into the basement at Dempsy’s for that fight. I even said to the owner, " But, it’s the REAL light-heavyweight championship. It’s REAL!" MMA won, though.

For the record, who did you have winning

I know some people think Hopkins won it

I just could not see it that way, even when I watched it back

by Sweet science on Nov 5, 2011 8:41 PM EDT up reply actions

For the record, I was trapped in Dempsy’s basement in New York City with an almost 100% British crowd, and I had a $50 bet going with the British guy sitting at my cheap-ass folding table. At the end of the fight, I said “Take it, take it, I don’t care who won this bullshit.” And, to his credit, he said, “Me neither, let’s just go in together on a bottle.”

Look, here’s the thing about Woods. Woods gave Cloud a hell of a losing fight, and he was a very ringworn dude at the time. Woods was old but has a good boxing brain, so while doing a lot less he was able to bit Cloud at will and really control the tempo. Bernard Hopkins, even now at 86 years old, will really torment Cloud in a way you don’t usually see. It’s just a tailor fit for style.

Cote vs Teron Round 1

Cote to the body, then a left hook upstairs lands. Hard right to the body. Cote is ripping away at Teron right away. Hand speed is very obvious. Right hand from Cote. Another right bangs the gloves. Teron popped again. He’s outclassed here. He looks lost. Very slow. HUGE RIGHT AND THAT SMASHED TERON! HE STAYS UP! What a SHOT that was!

Teron can’t do anything with him. He’s trying to just slow him down now. Left hooks fired away. Another one, adn a right behind it. Teron looks hopeless here in the first round. Uppercut right hand stings Teron, and he ties up again. ANOTHER big uppercut! Cote UNLOADING on the ropes, but Teron staggers Cote on a counter! Cote is hurting! But here comes Cote again! Yeah, Cote was hurt there. He’s tying up and hanging on. Teron might need this too.

Cote 10-9

When you’re trapped against the ropes, and the referee breaks you and has the fighters step back, use that opportunity to move away from the ropes.

Bute vs Johnson Round 1

Cuffing right hook by Bute. Glen flicking his jab, staying at the distance Bute wants for now. Well short on the jab. May be trying to lure him in. 1-2 from Glen is short. Bute jabs. Johnson shoots a right to the body, not quite there. Feeling-out round for both in the first two minutes. Good left hand from Johnson when Bute comes in, right as they talk about Bute’s low right hand. he looks for it again but doesn’t get it. Straight left from Bute, and another one. Bute closes the round strong.

Bute 10-9

If Johnson stays at that distance it’s going to be a fruitless night for him.

Bute vs Johnson Round 2

Bute looking to get his jab going. Johnson is just staying out there at good range. Little right from Bute stops a Johnson right hand coming in. Johnson pumping that jab out, but he’s mostly well short with it. Johnson very tentative, not getting inside. Not even trying to get inside. Jab, jab, jab. way too far out to beat Bute. Bute with a looping left, blocked, Johnson’s right in return is short. Another right a bit short, nicks Bute’s chest. Johnson really needs to pick this up.

Bute 10-9
Bute 20-18

Bute vs Johnson Round 3

Very slow start to this round as well. Look, neither of these guys are doing much at all. If you had it 20-20 I’d understand. Johnson with a nice jab. Long right misses. Bute really quiet this round. Johnson off balance on a right hook. Uppercut comes in from Bute. I don’t know what it is, Johnson really looks mentally vacant tonight. Two lefts from Bute, both blocked, right from Johnson misses. Right hand misses again. Glen is just not there. Bute comes in with a left, blocked by the glove. Johnson again misses a right.

Bute 10-9
Bute 30-27

he’s landing the better punches. And he’s not landing many.

Bute vs Johnson Round 4

Johnson’s jab has nothing on it. Just reaching and pawing with it. It’s almost coming at a downward angle. Jab lands. Bute waiting, waiting, waiting. Now Bute pawing. Flicking the jab. Everyone is inches short on their power shots and most of their jabs. I mean there’s no spirit in this fight. Neither is fighting with bad intentions.

In other words, this fight fucking sucks so far.

Left from Bute. Right to the body from Johnson is a little short, though closer. God this fight reeks.

Bute vs Johnson Round 5

Flick flick flick. wait wait wait. Bute backs him down with a left hand. Then Johnson comes back a few inches to where he’s been standing all night. Another left lands. HEY! Glen lands a right hand!

Glen Johnson’s not trying to get inside and isn’t landing an overhand right, or even throwing it much. Bute’s not throwing his uppercuts or body shots much.

Bute getting inside now, crowd gets excited. Throwing but not landing. Body shot gets in. Glen lands a weak body shot. Body shot by Glen.

Johnson 10-9
Bute 49-46

Think Johnson just barely knicked that one. This fight has been “who landed the best punch this round?”

Bute vs Johnson Round 6

Now Johnson starting to come inside and lands a good jab. Right to the body by Johnson. Now he’s throwing more punches. The 1-2s are coming closer together. Not waiting so much. Right hook by Bute cuffs Johnson. Johnson with a right. There’s an uppercut from Bute, not much, but a left hand lands. Johnson finally pumping the jab instead of just flicking. Right to the body by Johnson. Much better round. Still not very good, but much better. Right from Bute, left hand follows. Uppercut short again. Johnson with a 1-2. Johnson to the body with the right again. Bute with a left. Johnson jab lands.

Bute vs Johnson Round 7

Bute with a good left as Johnson back to flicking and waiting. REAL good right hook by Bute shakes Johnson a bit. Bute back in control this round. Three lefts and a right hook, the right hook catches Johnson pretty good and makes him look old. Glen’s not taking punches well. It’s like he gets hit clean and just hesitates. A non-pal might tear into him tonight. Right hook again. Glen lands a right back, but Bute just eats that one. Bute with an uppercut to the body, mostly blocked. Bute zeroing in now. Turning it up and Johnson can’t keep pace. Bute really getting going this round.

Bute vs Johnson Round 8

Johnson is getting into range, or rather Bute is getting bolder about getting into Johnson’s range. Johnson throwing the jab, but still little on it. Right to the body by Johnson. Another one. Long and little on it. Overhand right upstairs does land, no mustard on it. Johnson looks powerless tonight. Bute back at long distance now. Left hand by Bute. Right hand to the body again by Glen, but short. Right hook cuffs Johnson. Body shot pushes Johnson back. Left hand upstairs from Bute lands clean. Now he’s leaning on Johnson. Right hooks land. Right hook lands again. Johnson missing uppercuts inside.

Uppercut from Johnson hits gloves. Johnson on the ropes, trying to fight his way off, but it’s mostly for show. Glen’s uppercuts are awful looking. So weak. Left hooks from Johnson are landing, but no zip. Left lands again for Glen. Two little left hand pot shots from Glen. Bute wants a big shot, Tarver’s right. Left hook landing for Johnson, but njust no steam whatsoever. Bute coming at him and just overwhelming him. Bute ripping away with shots near the bell, then lays off at the gavel.
