Angulo vs Kirkland: Live Results and Round-By-Round Coverage

Alfredo Angulo and James Kirkland go to war tonight in Cancun.

Tonight at 10:15 p.m. EDT on HBO in the United States, and Sky Sports in the United Kingdom, HBO Boxing After Dark is back with an explosive main event in the junior middleweight division.

Live from Cancun, Golden Boy 154-pounders Alfredo Angulo (20-1, 17 KO) and James Kirkland (29-1, 26 KO) will collide in what promises to be an all-action brawl. It's sort of a make-or-break fight for both fighters, who have gained hardcore fans' approval over the years with their ferocious styles. Both have experienced professional and personal setbacks since this fight was first dreamed about in 2008. But the fight is going to have fireworks.

The co-feature will see middleweights Peter "Kid Chocolate" Quillin (25-0, 19 KO) and Craig McEwan (19-1, 10 KO) go toe-to-toe in a 10-round fight. Quillin is righting the career ship this year, and a win over the tough McEwan could be the next step toward a title shot for him. McEwan is coming off of his first career loss to Andy Lee in March.

Bad Left Hook will have live, round-by-round coverage tonight from Andrew Fruman. Join us!

Round 1

Here we go.

Action in the middle of the ring to start. Cautious start through the opening minute. McEwan is edging forward slightly, with Quillin flicking the jab out. Quillin just had a little flurry, and got in a body shot. McEwan pushes forward, whacks the body and gets tied up. Another clinch has McEwan tries to work his way inside. Now Quillin edging forward, looking to jab. He fires a right hand that glances. He’s working the jab here in the middle of the ring. 15 seconds left. A little flurry from Quillin and McEwan trips over his foot. He went down, but it’s ruled a slip.

Round 2

Here’s the replay on the slip. Punches didn’t land, good call by the ref.

Action in the middle of the ring to start the second round, and there’s a quick clinch. I think there heads almost came together there. Always a worry with a southpaw-orthodox match-up. Quillin with a flurry, might have got a shot home there. McEwan edges forward and lands a left hand. Now he bulls Quillin into the ropes. A good little spell from McEwan there. Action moves back to the center of the ring. McEwan trying to press again. Fires a 1-2, but was a little short and gets tied up. Both trying to work in the clinch, before they break. McEwan bulls Quillin into the ropes again. Quillin fires a right hand off the ropes that got through, but McEwan shoves him back into the ropes. Quillin bangs back, and McEwan bangs home a left. Now Quillin with a right hand and McEwan backs off. Good action. Now there’s another clinch. There’s the bell.

Round 3

The HBO team comments that Quillin’s punches are the harder ones so far. They have him up 2-0 so far.

Quillin flicks out the jab in the middle of the ring. Now, McEwan rushes forward and pushes him back and there’s a clinch. McEwan tries to jump in, but he’s tied up. Quillin again shooting the jab out, and now he tries to jump in and there’s another clinch. These guys are coming together awkwardly at times. Hope we don’t get a bad head clash. Quillin with a right to the body. McEwan with a 1-2, but misses. Now he tries to fire a left, but is short. Quillin with a counter right. Quillin with a little 1-2. He manages to slip the return fire as well. He sticks in the jab. He’s controlling this round. McEwan pushes forward though, and got a little shot in during the clinch along the ropes. Quillin with a right, but I think it was short. There’s another clinch. Quillin with a couple quick lefts. McEwan pushes forward, and tries to work Quillin along the ropes, but is tied up. Now he tries to flurry, and Quillin fires back. There’s the bell.

Round 4

McEwan tries to get some early work done, as he fires a left, before getting tied up. Action moves back to the middle of the ring, where Quillin is short with a right. Quillin is just looking like the more comfortable guy in there. Now there’s a clash of heads, but no damage as the ref takes a quick look at both guys. Quillin jumps in with a quick 1-2. He slips some return fire from McEwan. Quillin with a nice right hand. He follows up with a good 1-2. Quillin with a big right hand. Good work from Quillin here in the middle of round 4. McEwan fires a left, but he’s short. McEwan manages to get in a left hand, before getting tied up. Quillin bangs home a left, and they clinch. Quillin edging forward here, and McEwan jumps in with a left and is tied up. McEwan tries to jump in again, but is short. Roy comments on McEwan’s eye. It doesn’t look good, and his chances are slowly slipping away in this fight. Quillin in command as the round ends.

Round 6

This one is scheduled for 10. Not a thriller, as it’s an awkward style match-up and a bit one-sided. Harold has it 5-0.

Roy praises McEwan’s effort. He’s giving it his all, got to agree. He tries to lunge forward, but he’s easily tied up. Quillin has his gloves up now, as he edges forward. A nice exchange as both bang home shots at the same time. Now McEwan pushes Quillin back into the ropes. Quillin doesn’t look uncomfortable though, when he’s forced backward there. It’s more a case of McEwan using his body to plow forward, as opposed to punches forcing Quillin backward. Quillin with a really nice counter hook that hurts McEwan. A follow-up combo lands and the ref jumps in and stops it. This wasn’t all that competitive, but that’s a very early stoppage.

Here we go.

Kirkland edges forward and bangs home a couple quick shots on the inside. Angulo fires back with a heavy right, but he’s backed up by Kirkland, who drives him into the ropes. Big counter right from Angulo and down goes Kirkland! He’s up, but Angulo goes right after him. Angulo going for the stoppage. Kirkland along the ropes. He now backs away across the ring as Angulo chases. Kirkland tries to fire back, but he’s getting pounced. Angulo pushes him against the ropes and unloads. Kirkland is on unsteady legs. Angulo pouring it on. He’s banging home hooks. Power shots. Kirkland in the corner. He fires back and catches Angulo, but Angulo comes firing back. Kirkland along the ropes. He’s got his legs, I think. Angulo looks a bit arm weary, and now Kirkland storms back and pushes Angulo into the ropes. Kirkland hurts Angulo. Angulo backs into the ropes! Kirland pouring it on! This is crazy! Down goes Angulo. He’s hurt, but back on his feet. His arms are up, and he indictes he’s okay. Here comes Kirkland and there’s the bell! WOW!

Krikland pushes forward. He lands a combo. He lands to the body. Kirkland doing the better work. Angulo fires back with a hard right. Kirkland with a big left. Kirkland is risking punching himself out a bit here. He’s pushing forward, backing Angulo up. Now they’re in the middle of the ring. Kirkland bangs a left. Angulo fires back. Kirkland maybe a bit arm weary now. Angulo comes back. Kirkland digs to the body. Angulo jabbing back, as he tries to get a bit of room. Kirkland smacks him with a left. Now he pushes Angulo back, but Angulo tires him up. Kirkland with a couple little shots inside as he backs Angulo into a corner. He is flurrying away with Angulo in the corner. Now he backs off. But Kirkland pushes him back. Kirkland with a 1-2. Angulo leaning over a bit. He looks tired. He fires a left hand counter. Kirkland with a 1-2. Kirkland sticking home some more shots. Kellerman doesn’t like the look of Angulo’s legs. He fires back with a right. Kirkland bangs him back with a left. Kirkland digs to the body. Kirkland with a hard left. Kirkland pushes Angulo back with a 1-2. Big left hand. Angulo in retreat. Kirkland with another big left. Angulo with his back to the ropes. He’s taking a pounding. He digs back with a left to the body though and walks Kirkland back. Now he backs off again. Kirkland on the march forward. He fires home a 1-2. Angulo fires a left just before the bell. He’s looking like a weary beaten fighter.

10-9, 50-46 Kirkland. So if you’re El Perro’s corner, do you start to get worried about his welfare?

I hate to say this right now and all, but they might consider Angulo’s long-term health here. He’s really getting beaten to hell.

Round 6

Ann Wolf told Kirkland to stay calm. 5-0 on Harold’s card.

Action in the middle of the ring here. Angulo trying to get some range, flicking out the jab. Kirkland calmly stalking, and now pushes Angulo back. He fires a 1-2. He lands a heavy uppercut. Angulo with his back to the ropes now. Kirkland with a 1-2. Kirkland digging with an uppercut. The ref jumps in. This one is over!

How about "badass"

In a sport designed for badasses, I don’t know if I can name 10 people in the history of the sport who were more badass than Ann Wolfe. Muhammad Ali and Jack Johnson, for sure, but after that you start getting into a lot of toss-ups.

Call it like it is. That was a sexist comment. No need to hide behind what "scholars" might say.

The comment was fucked up and another example of why Lampley must go. He is the weakest link.

Also a racist comment, most Westerners equate “exotic,” when referencing mammals of any species, to African or South Asian animals whether predatory, simply rare, hominid or four legged. So he was essentially calling her an animal, and an African (Blackl) one at that. Or maybe to an “exotic” dancer. But all in all, he can’t win for losing with that one.
