Paul Williams, Erislandy Lara in Talks for Showtime Double-Header on January 21

Dan Rafael of ESPN.com tweeted this evening that junior middleweights Paul Williams and Erislandy Lara appear headed for a January 21 double-header on Showtime, six months after their incredibly controversial fight against one another in Atlantic City.

Following their fight, which everyone but Dan Goossen had Lara winning, there was some talk of a rematch, but nothing came of it. Neither has been back in the ring to date, and Williams (40-2, 27 KO) hasn't even had any serious chatter with his name attached. There was a rumor of a possible fight between Lara (15-1-1, 10 KO) and Sergiy Dzinziruk, but nothing came of it.

No opponents or venue have been set for the January 21 card, but Carlos Molina (19-4-2, 6 KO) was recently rumored as a possible opponent for Williams. Molina himself was involved in a much-debated fight with Lara in March, netting a draw on Friday Night Fights when many felt he deserved the win.

Given the double-header idea, it might be wise to expect fights that will make Williams and Lara heavy favorites, with Showtime possibly trying to build to a rematch later in the year, perhaps in the summer months.

A doubleheader so that neither fighter needs face each other? I enjoyed what Lara did to Williams, honestly, but is this the kind of rematch worth tapdancing around?

No, it’s not. But Lara isn’t getting any help, so however something decent has to happen for him, then I guess we have to accept it.

Not to be nit-picky here, but I scored the fight 114-114, as did your own Nick Foxx, if I remember correctly. So Dan Goossen was not the only one. Just saying.

Did your sons wonder why the TV men were being so mean to Uncle Paul?

Well, it’s nice to hear Lara has a TV date, any date, I was seriously beginning to be worried he’d hit a real roadblock in his career where nobody would want to fight him.

I see in a different post that Kirkland has a different date on a different network and over here Williams and Lara are heading for a rematch.
But wouldn’t Kirkland want a shot at Williams two or three fights down the road, especially if Paul takes a few more punishing bouts? I know GB will be trying to build Kirkland up and Williams would be a very big name victim.

Williams Kirkland is a fight I can get behind. Love Kirkland and Williams is going to throw a tons of punches and come for a fight.

I think Paul is just totally shot against the overhand right. If kirkland doesn’t have that punch then this could be an awesome fight. Williams also needs a new trainer mostly because his current one is an idiot. Let’s not fix this huge obvious flaw, you are too old to learn anything.

Peterson doesn’t think Williams is too old to learn, he doesn’t think there’s a huge obvious flaw.

I think you mean the overhand left (southpaw shot that Sergio and Lara both killed him with). As it is, I think Kirkland obliterates Williams no matter what. He’s good enough defensively to create opportunities to hit Williams cleanly, and I’d expect to see Paul backing up and reeling before a mid-rounds stoppage.

would love to see this fight. and also a lara rematch.
however i think william’s handlers may keep him away from southpaws for a while…
hope i’m wrong though…

I like Molina v Williams as a fight. Credit to Williams if takes on a tough fighter. I think that he is pretty far gone (I had Lara by 4 rounds at least) but I respect his willingness to take on tough fights

Nobody will read this and care and why should they?

I can see the logic trying to make this a bigger fight. I’m all on board giving these guys aged names too to try and give them a boost heading into it. Why not Mosley and Mayorga against these two? You get them marquee names to beat that fans will generally recognize and should make for at least somewhat compelling fights (neither man will likely quit) and then move to make a headlining fight with the two later in the year. I’d be happy with Williams/Lara II right away, but right now Paul Williams’ career needs to be resuscitated. And besides, if he lost to the likes of either Mosley or Mayorga, it reinvigorates them and you have Lara dispatch them summarily too.

Why not Mosley and Mayorga against these two?

Because those guys are finished and those fights are crap :)
If I were a matchmaker / promoter I would see your point but I am a fan and I want to see good fights.

Are they going to fight each other?

Dont see why Showtime is doing all these double header fights. Someone tell Showtime we dont want to see two named fighters fight two no-name fighters. we want to see two named fighters fight each other. I think a rematch in this one would be a good fight. The first fight was a good fight and I didn’t think it was that bad of a decision from a 10 point must stand point watched it 3 times twice with no sound, and it was a close fight that I would have given to Lara but there were at least 4-5 rounds that were close and Paul was going forward. Wouldn’t mind seeing Paul vs Molina could be an action packed fight that will be good for the fans.
