Cloud vs Erdei: Zsolt Erdei Could Pull Out of Fight With Hand Injury
BoxingScene.com reports this evening that veteran light heavyweight Zsolt Erdei could pull out of his December 31 fight on Showtime against titleholder Tavoris Cloud with a hand injury suffered in training.
A source with knowledge of the situation told BoxingScene that Erdei is having his hand evaluated by a physician to determine if the injury is a simple sprain or something more serious which requires an extended period of time to heal. The doctor's final ruling with determine whether or not Erdei withdraws from the contest.
Frankly, it doesn't sound good. Hand injuries are common, of course, and probably are the leading factor in guys having to bail on fights on short notice. Erdei (33-0, 18 KO) is lined up to challenge IBF titlist Cloud (23-0, 19 KO) in Anaheim on New Year's Eve, in what is slated to be the evening's main event. A super bantamweight title bout between Rico Ramos and Guillermo Rigondeaux is the co-feature.
If Erdei does pull out of the fight, there may be time to find a replacement and keep Cloud active on the card. Most of the IBF top 15 is unlikely, but maybe someone like Isaac Chilemba (18-1-1, 9 KO) could be in the mix. The South African has a promotional deal with Lou DiBella, as does Erdei, and if he's close to in shape, it could be a big opportunity for him.
For now, Cloud vs Erdei remains the fight. But it may not be too soon to think about alternatives.

Yeah, Campillo would be a great replacement, but I’d be a bit surprised if Cloud/King agree to that.
me too
good fight if they do it, though.

Zsolt Erdei—one of Hungary's greatest, right up there with Laszlo Papp.
If Adamek had stayed in the Light Heavyweight division an additional year and fought Erdei, that bout would have been perhaps just as bloodcurdling as the first war with Briggs.
Erdei’s has had a strange career…….Lt heavy to Cruiser back to Lt Heavy…………….and he’s never had a defining fight…………..and it looks like that trend may stay.
To be fair he had no idea he was fighting at cruiserweight until like 48 hours before the fight.

Wait, what? Wasn’t that for a vacant belt or something against the old Italian guy he fought? I know he came in hella light for it, but still.

he reportedly did not know he was fighting at cruiserweight, which is why he was SO light.

I would love to see some independent verification of this, because I honestly can’t believe its true. I was sitting at home in America and knew it was a cruiserweight fight. Well, OK, now that I think about it, I watched the fight from a Paris hotel room. but still – I’m not in his camp and I knew what he was fighting for. It is also possible he has the worst management ever.

I looked back and the story was he found out about five or six weeks before I should say — that clarifies it a little better, and in the caverns of my mind I’d exaggerated it on a Victor Ortiz level above. So he didn’t have time to really put on any mass, and just came in at 177 because he trained like normal.

He’s had two defining fights: The first fight with Garay (which was a lousy decision against a guy who had nothing else of value occur in his career) and the fight with Fragomeni (which was probably his best win, embarassingly enough, and a razor close decision in a great fight to boot).

If he pulls out, at least he'll get to ring in 2012 with peace of mind, not having to concentrate on winning.
I don’t know why some promoters schedule fights on holidays. If I was a promoter or sanctioning body official, I wouldn’t. Holidays are a time to spend with your family. But it’s indeed different for pro athletes, as we all know. It’s just another day in the office for them, like NBA players, for example. They take it to the hardwood to entertain us on Christmas afternoon on ABC.
