Maidana vs Alexander: Kevin Cunningham Says Fight Is Done, February 18 or 25
Steve Kim tweeted tonight that a proposed fight between Marcos Maidana and Devon Alexander is "on," according to Alexander's trainer/manager Kevin Cunningham, and the bout will take place on one of two February dates.
Maidana (31-2, 28 KO) and Alexander (22-1, 13 KO) will both be moving up to the welterweight division, it appears, after serving as top contenders and titlists at 140 pounds for the last few years.
If this fight is on February 18, it could be paired with James Kirkland's return, as Kirkland has reportedly been offered the February 18 date by HBO. It's highly unlikely that Golden Boy would go against itself on two separate networks, so it looks like Showtime isn't in the running for Maidana vs Alexander, at least for now.

Both Maidana and Alexander have recently been tied to Paulie Malignaggi, but it looks like "The Magic Man" is left out in the cold on this one. Malignaggi and Kevin Cunningham traded a lot of words in the media, with Alexander largely staying out of it (as usual), and later Malignaggi and Maidana agreed to fight one another on Twitter, but that's apparently not in Golden Boy's plans. Malignaggi, frankly, appears to be on the Golden Boy roster as a name more than as someone they plan to push very much.

I"ve kind of given up on Alexander, but I have to admit: the Urango fight was one helluva a victory! Now if he can extend his punches… btw- you think ortiz will ever rematch chino?

Yeah, probably. But the question in Ortiz’s mind is whether or not Maidana will ever rematch him, because he thinks Maidana owes him something for making him quit.

Its tough to feel bad for Paulie given that he isn’t a natural welterweight, can’t punch, and frankly he was never an elite light welterweight at any point in time before making the move up. Both of these guys did more than Paulie did at 140 and stylistically its a much, much better fight.
He has made more money than more talented fighters in my estimation and has been a fixture on HBO for years despite being featherfisted.
"Boxing is dirty," said Casamayor. " The day I’m not ready to be a dirty fighter is the day I don’t fight anymore because it will mean that I have no heart for it anymore."
if malignaggi had just a little more pop, he’s be trouble for a lot of people.
