Khan vs Peterson: Paulie Malignaggi Thinks Referee Did His Job With Point Deductions (Video)
Our friend Luke Thomas of MMA Nation had a chance to speak quickly with Paulie Malignaggi last night after the Khan vs Peterson upset in Washington, DC. Malignaggi was on hand working the fight for BBC Radio in the United Kingdom, which is probably just step one to a career in boxing broadcasting for the New Yorker.
Here's what he had to say about the fight:
On how he scored it:
"I had it 114-111 Amir, but that was giving all the close rounds to Amir Khan. I gave him the close rounds because he was with the house promoter, and also because he was the champion. But if you give the close rounds to Lamont Peterson, I could have it for Lamont Peterson, as well."
On the performance of referee Joe Cooper:
"I don't have a problem with it. I fought Amir Khan. I think he gets away with pushing you down all the time, pushing you off. So I don't have a problem with it. I thought finally someone did something about it. He knocked out Zab Judah by holding him down with one hand and hitting him to the body with the other hand. So it's just a situation where I think (the ref) did his job."

Better chance of a yeti riding a unicorn riding the Loch Ness monster suddenly appearing in the middle of the interview and carrying him off to Brigadoon.
I also think he’s right, for the record. I scored it 113-112 for Khan, but it was close, and the deductions were well deserved.

don't see any controversy with the referee?
He warned Peterson repeatedly for coming in with his head low but where was Peterson’s points deduction?

both fighters grabbed and clinched but it was Khan who had the points deducted.
none of it would’ve happened if Peterson hadn’t been leading with his head, by not penalizing Peterson at all, despite constant warnings, the referee allowed Peterson to disrupt Khan’s rhythm thus ensuring it was a dirty and awkward fight. I don’t see what other options Khan had.

theres a difference between a clinch and a headlock in all fairness, and you could argue this and that either way really but imo referee made the right calls

No. Not in the same way. Khan was using both hands, pushing down on the head, putting Peterson in head-locks and trapping arms, trying to completely shut down the inside fight, illegally. Peterson didn’t do any of that.

I counted no fewer than 5 egregious headlocks, at least 2 long-arm, strong shoves and several more subtle forearm and elbow shoves in close in round 11 alone. Khan was doing it all night long, even after the point deduction. Arrogant. "I don’t believe in that point deduction, therefore it didn’t happen and I can disrespect/disregard it type head.

He wasn’t coming in with his head low, that’s called bobbing, it’s a good old-fashioned way to slip a punch, and perfectly legitimate. Not once did Peterson butt Khan, he wasn’t trying to, and he wasn’t going to. He’s not a major bob-and-weave guy, but he knows how to do it, and he did. Good for him.

Thats another potential Mayweather candiate down the drain.
Looks like Mayweather is running out of potential opponents making the pacquiao fight more of an option
The path i want to see Khan take
Peterson rematch, Ortiz/Berto, Bradley, Then if he wins those devisevly enough Mayweather.
Scott can we have a button to edit posts?
my fat fingers are prone to typos.
nope
We have no edit button (and it’s not up to me whether we do or don’t btw) so that someone can’t say something, then erase a giant chunk of good discussion if they decide they’re embarrassed or change their mind or something.
