Khan vs Peterson Rematch: Lamont Peterson to Consider Other Options
Dan Rafael of ESPN.com reports via Twitter that Lamont Peterson is not 100% dedicated to a rematch with Amir Khan for his next fight, and that manager/trainer Barry Hunter will encourage Peterson to consider other options if there's a better offer out there.
(1) Barry Hunter told me tonight, "I want to look at every option that comes across the table because it’s business." (2) "There’s no need to go rushing into anything or to be reckless in our decision making." (3) "I think he deserves the time to take in what he has just accomplished."
Earlier tonight, Peterson received an offer from Golden Boy Promotions for a fight on May 19 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

But Peterson (30-1-1, 15 KO) owes nothing to Amir Khan right now. Yeah, Khan "gave him a shot" -- kind of. Peterson was the IBF mandatory, and Khan didn't want to give up his belt. The fact that Khan went to DC to fight is not Lamont Peterson's fault. It's not as if Peterson forced that issue. They all thought it was a good idea, so that's what happened.
There was no rematch clause and Peterson may well fight Khan again, and it does seem like everyone wants that. But if Peterson got a bigger offer from, say, Timothy Bradley and Top Rank for a rematch, or even a Floyd Mayweather fight (Lamont and Floyd have some gym history), he should be expected to entertain the offers. Golden Boy and Khan have to make this fight worth it for Lamont Peterson.
That's the reality right now, and it's going to be interesting to see where this goes.

This is not entirely unexpected, but I think they have to be rational here and not Marquez themselves out of TV time and the public eye. My fear is that we wake up in 8 months talking about Lamont finally returning to the ring in an GBP PPV against the likes of Humberto Soto or something.

He’s just a random guy I chose as an example. I’m just saying I don’t want to see him go on the shelf and end up taking a crappy or unnecessary fight because his people think, “hey, instead of a rematch right away, let’s make some easy money and try and make HBO take a fight” as they parade out Joan Guzman or Zab Judah or someone like that who is a fringe contender with some name value but who isn’t someone anyone is demanding Peterson fight.

I know, I was just taking my occasional pointless crack at Soto.

He does deserve it though. LOL
Actually, I just realized something: Why not Soto/Guzman II in 2012? Seriously now. Does that make me a horrible person?

I realize he's a new champ
and wants to bask in the glow, but May 19 seems late. Khan fights every year before Ramadan. If he wants to rematch Khan (and I would if I were him – he’s the best money option out there), then he should fight no later than April so he can fight again in July or early August.

If I’m honest I think if they rematch and Khan fights as good as he can then Khan wins, and I Really like Peterson so I think Petersonmaybe deserves a fight against a legitimate contender but still won he would be the favourite to beat. How many people would have him beating Khan in a rematch? I doubt many bookies would.
I’d like to see Peterson fight in D.C against someone like Danny Garcia, get his win! Then fight Khan so he at least gets his moment in the sun.
I most likely feel this way cause Peterson reminds me of someone close to me, my family are very close friends with the Turpin family. The Turpins were a family of boxers and in the fifties Randy Turpin beat Sugar Ray Robinson..but he never got his moment to bask in glory cause straight away he rematches and lost to Robinson this time in America.
I just think sometimes you put you hands up and say this guy has worked hard let’s give him a break
+1
I’m with you. Peterson won the title, and now he’s getting a face full of “GBP has reserved the whatever-dome for whenever-soon-like-tomorrow day” which is arrogant in itself. Not their call. Let them wait. Peterson has somewhat established a TV presence and can make money while honing his skills further. If he loses the rematch (he might not), his options will close right down. No reason at all to be hustled into possibly losing his title for the convenience of Khan and GBP, or to further someone Else’s career plans. If Khan’s moving up in weight, he’ll be relinquishing the title anyway, so he’s got no real beef. Except, of course, that he’s out of the Money, which is just what happens when you lose. No one owes him that back. No one owes him anything. It’s only his profound sense of entitlement informing that expectation.

Lamont Peterson made $10,000 to fight Victor Cayo in July. I did not miss a 0 there. Peterson vs (someone) is not likely to be picked up by HBO, and you can bet that Golden Boy won’t use any of their 140-pound guys to set him up.
This is, fair or unfair, going to be seen as a fluke and if he wants to prove it’s not, he has to fight Khan or Bradley. Those are really his only true options if he wants to be paid the way he deserves, because he’s not being backed with power.
I agree he doesn’t owe it to Khan. But does he owe it to himself to get the payday he’s earned and prove it again?

All’s well if he can prove it again. But what if he can’t? What happens to him then? Not much, is my guess. It’s true beating Khan didn’t do much for Breidis Prescott, so maybe I’m nuts, but Prescott’s a lot more limited than Peterson, did not win a title in that fight, and is not a local guy. Peterson doesn’t have a huge national fanbase, but he’s got a better fanbase than Prescott, using Prescott as a for instance.

I don’t know. If he can’t then he can’t. I don’t see what’s so terrible about hoping he takes the best fight out there for him, which is a rematch with either Khan or Bradley. I have just about no interest in seeing him fight Zab Judah, for instance, and he won’t make a ton of money with that. He might get it on the NBC Sports Network with its $100,000 budget, but what else is he going to do? Go to Showtime for a fight with … uh … Mike Alvarado? Vernon Paris?
It might seem like he has a lot of great options, but if he wants real money, it looks pretty limited to me.

Is Al Haymon involved with Peterson? Because then I put this as “all bets are off” and we see him against a random Argentian on Showtime in October.

Ithink he does have to fight Khan to get that paid I just think he would do well fighting in DC as the champion. Question is if he goes this route and fights someone else he risks losing his big pay day with Khan. What’s Khan going to do.. The really is no one left at 140 for Khan except Peterson and Bradley and he now would have no leverage to fight Bradley, and Khan’s not going to wait around for Peterson he may just move up to147 off the back off the loss if he can’t get the rematch.
3 things I’d like to here your guys view on. 1. Could Peterson make a career out of doing what Strum does and just constantly defending the belt in home fights in DC, (not that I’d like to see this because I think a champion should get on and defend his title all over he owes it to the fans). 2. Does Peterson take the Khan fight under the knowledge that he will get his big payday and also considering that even if he loses, Khan and Bradley are heading up to 147 so he could legitamitly be a world champion again in a year or two when them two are gone. So get the big pay day fight in, then if he wins great, if he loses two of his biggest opponents will be leaving the weight class anyway. 3. Does anyone think Bradley goes after Peterson? He could peruse that fight and clean up the division if you will before moving up by fighting someone he pretty much controlled two years ago

Depends on what you consider a career. Sturm makes good TV money with what he does. The TV game in the States is not the same.
Does Peterson take the Khan fight under the knowledge that he will get his big payday and also considering that even if he loses, Khan and Bradley are heading up to 147 so he could legitamitly be a world champion again in a year or two when them two are gone.
I really expect he’ll take the Khan rematch. For one thing I don’t think he’s afraid to lose or anything.
Does anyone think Bradley goes after Peterson?
Would not be remotely surprised.

I don’t think Peterson can beat Bradley. Bradley does all the things Khan wont or can’t, and he moves more effectively than Khan. But a loss to Bradley doesn’t bring any money in for the risk equated with it. I mean a Mayweather fight isn’t out of the question. This was the fight Khan was pursuing and Peterson beat Khan so why not go after the big Money and wipe that TBA off the board for May 5th if the Pac fight doesn’t go through. Its worth waiting to see…
You may be right, and although I gave him a chance of competing well, I didn’t think Peterson would beat Khan either. Peterson has stepped his game up since losing to Bradley, so I’d give him a shot there. I don’t think Money will fight Peterson…I don’t think it’s a big enough draw for him. I could be wrong though, just my opinion.
Yeah, I don’t think that would work here. As has been mentioned, HBO will not automatically pick up a shit fight just cuz it’s Lamont Peterson, even if he is champ now. Overseas, the money is bigger and therefore guys like Sturm can hide there and get paid cuz it will be a big attraction. However, I don’t think Peterson would want to do that anyway.
I understand what both sides are saying here. Peterson’s big payday will be a Khan rematch. If he takes an “easy” home fight, Khan may be gone to 147 by the time Peterson would do the rematch. But if Peterson does the rematch and loses, he too loses his chance at big time paydays.
So in closing, basically Peterson needs to take the rematch and win lol.
Here’s hoping Lamont makes a good business decision.
He is not…nor do I expect him to suddenly be…an easily marketable guy. That is just how the ball bounces. He is a 99 percenter; a guy who does everything to get to level that he has. And major props to him. But he is not charismatic, telegenic and/or that exciting to watch. He need to play this out to his geatest advantage because IMO he will not have the networks or the big names seeking him out for long.
Nobody said life is fair. Lamont I believe, knows that.
