Ward vs Froch Undercard Results: Despaigne Upset By White, Miranda Victorious

The action has started in Atlantic City on the Andre Ward vs Carl Froch card, and one of the early results may have put a scheduled February rematch in jeopardy.

Yordanis Despaigne of Cuba was upset by Houston's Cornelius White in a six-round light heavyweight bout, losing on scores of 60-53, 59-55, and 59-55. Despaigne (9-2, 4 KO) was fighting to get back into the ring more than anything, and setting up a Friday Night Fights rematch on February 3 with Edison Miranda.

But that may now be in jeopardy, as White (18-1, 15 KO) simply showed too much determination for the former amateur star, decisively beating him in a bloody affair that saw the underdog score repeatedly to the body, taking the wind right out of Despaigne, who hadn't fought since his controversial DQ win over Miranda on July 29.

As for Edison Miranda, he was also in action tonight, stopping Kariz Kariuki in the fifth round. Miranda improves to 35-6 (30 KO), while Kariuki falls to 24-10-2 (19 KO).

In heavyweight action, Bowie Tupou (22-1, 16 KO) won a 10-round decision over Donnell Holmes (33-2-2, 29 KO) on scores of 95-94, 96-93, and 95-94.

Notably still to come on the undercard is Kell Brook, the British welterweight making his debut on American soil.

The C. White v Y. Despaigne was the best fight of the night for me. Really a good, high action fight involving two reasonably good boxers. Didn’t see the Miranda fight yet. Kell Brook’s fight was just a showcase.
