Dirrell vs St-Juste on ShoBox: Live Results and Round-By-Round Coverage

Anthony Dirrell and Renan St-Juste fight for a WBC super middleweight title shot tonight on ShoBox. (Photo by Tom Casino/Showtime)

Tonight at 11 p.m. EST on Showtime, the latest edition of ShoBox: The New Generation goes live from Chumash Casino in Santa Ynez, California.

In the 12-round super middleweight main event, Michigan's Anthony Dirrell (23-0, 20 KO) looks to score a career-best win over 39-year-old Canadian Renan St-Juste (23-2-1, 15 KO). The fight is, for some reason, a WBC eliminator, meaning that the winner will be in line to face the winner of the December 17 fight between Andre Ward and current WBC titlist Carl Froch.

Not that anyone's gotten ahead of themselves, but there has been talk already of a Ward vs Anthony Dirrell fight, and apparently it's a lot more serious than Ward vs Andre Dirrell ever was.

[ Related: ShoBox Preview for December 2 ]

In the co-feature, super bantamweight Chris Avalos (19-1, 15 KO) makes his record sixth appearance on ShoBox, taking on unbeaten Colombian Jhonatan Romero (19-0, 12 KO) in a 10-round bout.

We'll have live coverage of both fights, and immediate post-fight analysis. After the ShoBox is all wrapped up, come back for some late night fight previews, as I'll be taking a look at tomorrow's heavyweight double-header in Helsinki.

I don't disagree with you

Obviously I want to see Sakio Bika on that list (he’s fighting a can on the undercard of the Agbeko fight tomorrow, to shake the rust off). But there’s just a lot of really good people at 168, including a bunch of great prospects.

Avalos vs Romero Round 1

Romero doing some nice counter work. The bit I’d seen of him, he seemed comfortable countering, and that’s showing here. Right hand from Romero pops Avalos. Avalos doesn’t look super comfortable with this dude, and Romero looks very relaxed. Romero has a bit of a slappy left hand. Avalos gets in a good shot on the ropes. He wants him on the ropes. Romero hits on the break, then the round ends with Avalos knocking down Romero! Romero looked like he almost sat down there. Weird.

10-8 Avalos — looked like it might have been a slip. Nonetheless, it looks like Romero can’t stop Avalos from trapping him against the ropes, and if he does, he’ll dominate. Romero does have good hand speed, but he tends to flick.

Avalos vs Romero Round 2

Avalos comes out throwing to start round two. Romero catches Avalos with a shot to the back of the head. Well Romero DID look relaxed. When Avalos steps up pressure and catches up to him, it’s not so good.

Romero jabbing and kinda … well, this is not the effective backward movement I like. BAHWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Romero with a nice right uppercut catching Avalos open. This fight ain’t pretty at all, but it’s alright. Right from Romero. He’s kept distance all round and landed the better shots.

Romero 10-9, 19-18 Avalos. This is a classic boxer versus puncher fight. Romero is pot-shotting wonderfully, but he always seems like one 15-second segment pinned against the ropes away from disaster

Avalos vs Romero Round 3

Body shot from Romero. Avalos is having a horrible time finding Romero. Avalos not much for opponents who can move around. ShoBox #6 might not be his last.

Right hand from Romero. Avalos missing a ton. Potshot, potshot, potshot. Short left hook counters when Avalos comes in all super low. Then a right hand that Avalos walks into again. Body shot from Romero. Avalos isn’t landing anything clean anymore.

Avalos vs Romero Round 4

“This is an important fight for Romero,” notes Menefee, blowing my mind.

Good trade with Romero on the ropes halfway into the round. Otherwise this is Romero controlling again. Finally Avalos starts digging to the body, but then Romero lands two left hooks. Romero shooting uppercuts. Jab and a right from Avalos. Not exactly fluid. Nice uppercut from Romero. Avalos turning it on some this round. Closest of the fight.

I didn’t watch the first 3 closely enough to score the fight fairly, but I’m not impressed with either guy. Avalos is a guy with one gear and everyone knows what his deal is, but Romero is not doing himself any favors here heading to the ropes, dropping his hands, squaring up, and swinging like he is. He’s ducking and defending the occasional punch, but I chalk that up more to his reaction time and athleticism than his technique. I think he reaches too much at distance with power shots. Raw, raw, raw. And not in a good way.

Avalos vs Romero Round 7

Romero with a right. And another. Avalos is getting timed pretty badly now. Right hand misses, left hook lands. Avalos throwing. Romero blocking basically every zipless punch Avalos is throwing, but it’s a lot of activity, so he’s probably winning the round now.

Romero standing on the ropes like a damnfool at this point. What the hell strategy is that? Two rights from Romero when he gets back out to center ring, but I’m wondering if he’s tiring too. Those are Fight Night Round 3 tired punches.

“That was a great round,” says Steve.

Personally I prefer when punches land more often.

Avalos eats a left, but he’s just chasing Romero now. Menefee lets us know that Avalos is ranked as high as No. 4 by some sanctioning bodies. That’s a great reason to ignore sanctioning body rankings. Thanks, Curtis.

And now Avalos is tired again. Uppercut from Romero. Romero is going to lose this on the cards because he gives the impression so often that he’s tired and doesn’t want to fight. It’s not because he’s worse than Avalos.

If this were MMA, there would be a bunch of dudes in this comment section talking about this being the fight of the year and calling them stars and planning out routes to the title. This is why I like talking boxing so much more.

It’s a Leonard Garcia fight. There’s a lot going on, not much of it means anything, but in the moment it’s easy to get caught up in all the arm movement.

I think those cards are fair, but I’m surprised that Romero won that fight, given that he wasn’t the name fighter and those were very close rounds.

Good opener…I had Avalos winning 95-94, the difference being the knockdown in round 1. I can’t argue with the judges’ scores though. Romero fought effectively. Anyone with a bigger punch than Romero and Avalos would get KTFO. LOL at thoughts of putting him in vs. Darchinyan or Mares.

Showtime’s Staredown is so derivative of HBO’s feature. Why not have them speak back-to-back? More honesty might result, and you get to act like you’re innovative.

Dirrell sneaks in with a lead left hook. Looping right hand from Dirrell. Good right from Dirrell knocks St-Juste back, and he felt that one. Dirrell is totally in control. St-Juste with a little left.

Dirrell has the loudest corner.

Another good right from Dirrell.

Dirrell vs St-Juste Round 2

Dirrell is just too strong and too fast, it appears. And too aggressive. St-Juste just seems too tentative. Right lands again, and Dirrell chases him wiht a wild left hook after. Left hand from St-Juste. St-Juste lands another good left, but Dirrell lands harder with a counter left hook.

Man, Dirrell can bang. I’m starting to like him more and more.

Dirrell switches southpaw at the end of the round, with teh most insane look in his eyes, and they trade lefts.

Dirrell vs St-Juste Round 3

St-Juste trying to jab to the body. Dirrell waiting on a counter chance. Now we have a standstill. Crowd gets restless. St-Juste steps forward, Dirrell pops him with a left hook. St-Juste starting to make charges. Dirrell dying to counter him. And he smacks him with another left hook. Now he switches southpaw with 15 seconds left in the round. Southpaw 1-2 gets in. St-Juste misses badly on a left hand swing, Dirrell gets him with a left from under.

10-9 St. Juste, 29-28 Dirrell. I have to remind myself not to go on autopilot in these slow rounds. I thought St. Juste did a bit more that round.

Better round for St. Juste, relatively speaking. But on those reare occasions he’s punching, Dirrell is countering beautifully.

Dirrell vs St-Juste Round 4

Dirrell drives him back in with right hands. St-Juste getting a little desperate because he can’t get Dirrell to give him many openings. Body shots from Dirrell. Heads clash HARD and both are hurting. Dirrell with a little cut.

After a quick break, Dirrell starts pressing and he’s throwing BOMBS on St-Juste now, and St-Juste trying to tackle him. Wait — St-Juste has a shoulder injury, and the fight is over.

Anthony Dirrell TKO-4

Left shoulder does look bad. No bullshit it appears.
