Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

135 is the new 147 and 126.

1 Juan Manuel Marquez 53-6-1 (39) 42
2 2 Brandon Rios 29-0-1 (22) 42
3 3 Miguel Vazquez 29-3 (13) 42 01-28 vs Ameth Diaz
4
4 Antonio DeMarco 26-2-1 (19) 18
5 5 Jorge Linares 31-2 (20) 42
6 6 Ricky Burns 33-2 (9) 7
7 7 Kevin Mitchell
32-1 (24) 22
8 8 Urbano Antillon 28-3 (20) 42
9
9 Michael Katsidis 28-5 (23)
13
10 10 Gavin Rees 35-1-1 (16) 15

So, remember when 147 was the "red hot" division before Mayweather came out of retirement and took a big dump on it? (Williams, Margarito, Cintron, Berto, and other fighters couldn't get good fights while Floyd took the division hostage and moved up or fought no-name contenders) Also, when 126 was the "red hot" division with a promise of a super fight at feather weight between Juanma vs. Gamboa in the January of 2010 when the Mtagwa and other contender double header to set up the mega fight... except Gamboa looked a little "too exceptional" against Mtagwa... and the fight "that's been brewing" got axed once Salido knocked out Juanma and now Gamboa will move up to 135. Beauitiful! To add to that beautiful BLH Rankings list up there, we can add Gamboa and Mercito Gesta (who I think fights beautifully, has a nice right hook, and fights sort of compact, smart, and powerful like a Mike Garcia at 135).

Here's a short clip of Gesta:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MoxcvQD6rso

And now will promoters or networks choose to capitalize on this hot division by pitting these contenders and titleholders against each other? We can have a four person tournament, or simply more promotions by Golden Boy like Latin Fury and Lightweight Lightning. This division is scalding hot, and offers expire soon! Fighters could always move up in weight, duck each other, or simply take long lay offs and get exposed. I hope this division stays active in 2012. Can't wait to see what they decide to do! Pc!

DeMarco Rios anyone, or Burns Rios. Fun stuff. Almost any of these match ups can make FOTY candidates. Pc!

Rios looks like he’s heading up in weight and I can’t see Marquez fighting at 135 again anytime soon. There’s some fun fights to make there with them exiting, but I feel like there’s also an appreciable dropoff from them to the people at 3-10 (who are somewhat even).

by VirtualBalboa on Dec 22, 2011 3:14 PM EST reply actions

I do know Rios hired Victor Conte and after the fight he cited his reason for not making weight is b/c he was in the colder altitudes of Mexico vs. being in the hot climate of Oxnard, CA where he can build more of a sweat. We’ll see what happens! Btw- Rios Marquez could smell FOTY! Pc!

Rios is considering staying at 135. They’re going to sit down and figure it out.

I’m LITERALLY (!!!) dying to see DeMarco vs Linares II. That was such a good fight, and I really wish they’d do it again.

But do you think linares can tweak out a victory? He has great skills, but his chin could fail him again. Unless he holds and runs in the latter half to stink a decision. Great victory for DeMarco tho…

I think if he can manage to turn in his absolute best performance for 12 rounds, he can beat anyone. But he’s incredible vulnerable so that makes everything exciting.

He’s like supercharged Amir Khan — he’s an even better boxer than Khan, even more naturally gifted, and even more vulnerable.

Is it a chin issue, a heart issue, or a “fighting braver than he should” issue, b/c I guess even without holding, he could have won the fight if he had just boxed instead of trying to go toe to toe, or even staying in the pocket flat footed in the later rounds and exchanging… if he had moved his feet a little more after each combination he would have tweaked out a victory… or does he have too much meldrick in him… i still think this isn’t the poor man, but the working class version of chavez taylor… boxer vs. puncher/stalker… one who’s out pointing and out boxing the other, one who’s honing in and doing more damage… big gap in points… last minute turnaround… this might impact linares psychologically tho, we’ll see. Pc! Exciting stuff. 135 rules!

You’re leaving out the horrible cuts which are really what did him in. Don’t get me wrong he didn’t fight really smartly down the stretch, but his face became a bloody mess as well.

by Sammlung on Dec 24, 2011 6:05 PM EST up reply actions

totally sam, unfortunately it seems he wasn’t blessed with the thickest skin.
it didn’t seem like demarco was hitting him in a way that would tear up his face the way it did.
not a fatal flaw, but it is a limitation of his…

I’m a very big Linares fan and I agree on all counts. In terms of pure talent, he’s got to be in the top 10. He’s a beautiful boxer. But he can be rocked and stopped so he’s not the sure thing people thought he was a few years ago.

I hope he wasn’t too damaged by the DeMarco fight and bounces back strongly, because he’s a special fighter.

Question:

What happened to Miguel Acosta? Has he done anything since the Rios fight? I think he’d do well against a lot of guys on that top 10 list.

He lost again in October to Richard Abril and looked pretty well past it in doing so.

I'm not sure that 135 is the next big thing

Honestly, I see a whole lot of mediocre there, and there aren’t a lot of premier prospects in the division either. If Gamboa actually moves to 135, it helps, but also the extra weight just might take away his speed, and he’s had a questionable chin even against lighter punchers. If I were to guess the next division to blow up, I’d say middleweight. Or maybe 168 just stays blown up, with all of the up and coming talent in that weight class.

i agree. I could see being excited about 135 if Marquez wanted to continue fighting and Guerrero and Rios weren’t moving up, but not at the moment. Even if Rios does stick around I don’t think it’s likely to become very hot in the next year or two.

by bachwards on Dec 22, 2011 5:55 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, I don’t see that Boxrec top 10 as all that promising, with what’s soon gone by retirement or moving up, what’s mostly gone (Katsidis comes to mind; Antillon’s best days are past), and what I just don’t believe in. Not a bad division, but I’m keeping my horn to my side.

so you don’t think a tall lanky richard burns could make a good fight wtih jmm, or that rios demarco, or linares demarco would make a good fight, or that gesta and gamboa couldn’t have fun competitive fights with these guys. teh way i see it, 118 only has a few names i knw that can keep things interesting, and then donaire who blows all of them away on the same night. pc!

sinec when did 160 become a fun division. jcc, canelo (if he moves up), pirog, sturm, and martinez. that’s all i can think of.. and pavlik, he’s dead to me anyway. 168 only has the super six guys, a blown up mw in jt, and bute. 175 is pretty tumbleweedish… 126 has been evacuated, but could shape up with broner and russell, and juanma and gonzalez and ponce de leon in the same place… but what division is hot now? 147 is a wasteland, 154 is just cotto and a bunch of so-so’s besides canelo, 140 is emptying out with the fat jr. welters moving up to 147 to “chase big fights”… so malignaggi gonna make a splash, or alexander the “fake” or “ufo” victor ortiz? Come on guys…

It's not a fun division yet

But if people start actually fighting each other, I can’t imagine a bad fight between any of these guys:

- Sergio Martinez
- Gennady Golovkin
- Dmitry Pirog
- Grzegorz Proksa
- Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam
- Matthew Macklin
- Andy Lee
- Peter Quillin

Plus there are a bunch of guys who aren’t on the same level as those guys in my opinion, but usually make for good fights:

- JCC Jr.
- David Lemieux
- Advantil Khurtsidze
- Paul Williams
- Darren Barker
- Fernando Guerrero
- Osumanu Adama
- Makoto Fuchigami

Plus there are guys like Sturm, Arthur Abraham (who’s moving back down), Daniel Geale and (assuming he can fully come back) Daniel Jacobs who at least are good competitors, even if I don’t like watching them fight that much.

Plus a few other exciting fighters who easily could move up:

- Canelo
- Lukas Konecny
- Kirkland
- Angulo

It’s mostly a matter of getting these guys to actually start fighting each other instead of taking on the also rans, but if they do, this could be the hottest division in boxing a year from now.

by Brickhaus on Dec 23, 2011 4:15 PM EST up reply actions

And yeah, I know a lot of people haven't seen half those guys fight

But trust me, the guys I mentioned up top, other than maybe Quillin (who I just think would provide a good foil for the others) are all a lot of fun to watch. None of the Europeans fight like Europeans. Golovkin fights like a Mexican, Proksa and Pirog are both slick counterpunchers who still throw a lot of punches, and N’Dam is basically a rich man’s Fernando Guerrero.

Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog

by Brickhaus on Dec 23, 2011 4:19 PM EST up reply actions

Well, Quillin looked alright agst McEwan, I like Pirog but if he doesn’t fight Martinez or Sturm then I’m not interested. I’m interested in JCC and Canelo, I’ve heard not so good things about David Lemieux… and you think the current Paul Williams and Andy Lee and the tentative Darren Barker have more talent/promise than 3-10 on the lightweight scale, or gesta/gamboa/acosta? I dunno, I’d like to disagree, but maybe I’m not big on the middleweights, or some of the guys I’ve never seen (the Advil guy, Advantil etc.). The plan to beat Abraham is out, I saw Fernando Guerrero on the Khan Peterson card live, but it’s hard to assess b/c he was facing a punching bag and in a fight where the ref should have stopped it 3 rounds earlier (the guy left in a stretcher, and was carrying on in a wheelchair afterward in the arena). So Golovkin and Proksa I’m yet to see, but I still think the lightweights have solid line up with no “Andy Lee’s” or “Paul Williams” to clog the pipe, but I do like Lara and Molina, and we’ve yet to see some real action at 154 or 160, but if they fight we might see it. Pc!

Wow, you're really twisting my words around

I have listed four categories:

1) good, exciting fighters, of which there are 8
2) Not so good, but usually exciting fighters
3) Good, but not exciting fighters
4) guys who might move up

Most of the guys you’re bashing me about fall into the second category, and I was quite clear about that.

We’ve never had a fight between two guys who are in my first category. Martinez-Macklin will be the first. If those guys start fighting each other regularly, this division should get really good. The problem is that there are a ton of guys at middleweight who seem credible enough but just kind of stink, and the contenders mostly keep fighting those guys instead of each other.

In case you have any desire to check guys out

Scott did pieces recently on

Golovkin – http://www.badlefthook.com/2011/5/29/2195705/gennady-golovkin-boxing-prospect-spotlight-middleweight
Quillin – http://www.badlefthook.com/2011/5/29/2195681/peter-quillin-boxing-prospect-video-profile

Also, this is over two years old, but might be my best piece of work – a breakdown of middleweight prospects from a while back. It’s finally coming to a head. Korobov flamed out due to medical issues, and Jacobs disappeared after his loss to Pirog (apparently because of medical issues as well), but pretty much everyone else on the list is heading in the direction I predicted they would.

I'm hoping Jorge Linares can rebuild his career

when I watch him, I see superstar..clearly he’s had a couple of set backs but think he will be the 135 king in a year or so. Rios is moving on to 140 and Marquez won’t be around forever

by Frank Lee on Dec 27, 2011 9:59 PM EST reply actions

I ono, I see DeMarco and/or Rios beating him 4 out of 5 times. Walking him down, covering up, digging to the body, and taking him in deep. I think Linares has the potential, but he hasn’t had a breakthrough performance yet. I dunno, I heard Rios hired Victor Conte and is looking to stay 135. Maybe Linares can try fighting the tested Katsidis to see where it measures up and it will be a decent money fight, or will attract a crowd. Kat is always up for a decent fight. Linares Burns would be an interesting match up. When we throw in Gamboa and Gesta I think we’ll see some freaki’n awesome match ups.
