Mares vs Agbeko 2: Live Results and Round-By-Round Coverage

Four of the world's best bantamweights are in action tonight in Anaheim. (Photo by Esther Lin/Showtime)

HEADS UP: PLEASE, NO SPOILERS FOR ANY OF THE FIGHTS ON THE MARGARITO VS. COTTO CARD IN THIS THREAD.

We'll have more live coverage than just the Cotto vs Margarito II pay-per-view this evening, as Bad Left Hook will also be here with round-by-round results and immediate post-fight analysis of the Showtime bantamweight double-header from the Honda Center in Anaheim.

In the main event, Abner Mares (22-0-1, 13 KO) looks to silence the critics in his rematch with Joseph Agbeko (28-3, 22 KO). On August 13, the two had an incredibly controversial bout marred by referee Russell Mora in Nevada. This time, they head to California, with Mares defending his IBF title, as well as the WBC silver bantamweight belt, in what promises to be another terrific fight.

In the co-feature, WBA titleholder Anselmo Moreno (31-1-1, 11 KO) makes his American TV debut in his first fight under the Golden Boy Promotions banner, facing longtime Showtime regular Vic Darchinyan (37-3-1, 27 KO) in another title fight. Darchinyan is coming off of a total destruction of Yonnhy Perez in April, as well as a wide points win over Evans Mbamba in Armenia on September 3.

Matt Miller will be handling the live and post-fight duties for this one, so join him this evening for what promises to be a fantastic card. If you're not watching this show, but still want live results, this is the place to be.

I tried to talk SHO into putting this on at 7 p.m. EST. No go. I thought that would have been kickass — six good fights in one night, back-to-back.

You were able to talk to SHO?

In all honesty, I didn’t realize you were that influential. That’s really awesome (even in a losing effort).

by schraubd on Dec 3, 2011 7:33 PM EST up reply actions

Well it wasn’t a serious conversation really. Not their call totally, since the promoters would probably be a bit shy about putting on main events at 4 p.m. local. But the SHO folks are really cool. They’re very internet savvy.

The Moreno-Darchinyan fight really has my intrest. I been following Moreno for some time. Good, underrated fighter. Curious to see how or if he can deal with Darchiyan’s firepower

All of it. Gimmie, gimmie, gimmie. I want it all.

Darchinyan 10-9

R1

Not wasting time here. Vic is coming out aggressive and leading with the multiple jab. That jab is working for him to get inside right now. Moreno eating some rights when Vic gets in. This is Vic’s fight right now, though Moreno isn’t fighting terrible or anything. Vic clearly looks the more powerful man in there. Now Moreno coming back with a minute left. Getting inside with some jabs of his own, but now Vic is stalking again. Moreno fighting off his back foot most of this round. Even though many of those missed, Vic got the better of it that round.

Vic 10-9.

R2

Vic is being his usual ducking awkward self. Big left from Moreno, his best punch so far. They exchange on the inside, some bombs now/ Moreno is fighting back. This is not the boxing match we expected from him, though Moreno does have good defense as expected. Vic gets a good right in and pushes Moreno back. Close round. Up for grabs on my card with 30 secs left. Good body shots from Vic toward with 20 secs out. The Showtime guys have their head up Moreno’s butt, esp Tarver.

Very close round, but I gave it to Moreno.

19-19.

Awkward fight as expected but good action. Vic lands a good overhand right. Vic grabbing a lot when he gets close, fighting a little dirty. Moreno time a good one as Vic comes in. The Showtime guys are annoying me with their Moreno love. He DOES NOT look as good as they are making it sound. He looks good, but come on. Moreno hitting Vic as Vic moves in though, I will give him that.

Moreno seems o be getting Vic’s timing down really well as Vic comes in, but there Vic lands a good one. They DO hurt Moreno when he lands. Now Vic is stalking again, landing to the body. Better round for Vic for sure. Tarver: “Moreno is fighting a PEFECT fight!!!” Whatever. He does look good. Moreno is winning the latter part of the round. Vic loses his cool and throws Vic at the end of the round, ref ducks a point, which is understandable. It was blatant.

What the announcers haven’t mentioned is that Vic’s blows do more damage than Moreno’s. Bug right from Vic then a good counter by Moreno. Good action here. Moreno landing more now. Moreno doing some good counterpunching. Moreno goes low, looked intentional to me. Vic is ready again, ref warns Moreno. Vic missing two or three for everyone he lands, but when they do land, they seem to hurt Moreno, pushing him back and slowing him down. Showtime continues to praise every thing Moreno does. Vic finished that round better than Moreno and took it back on my card.

57-56 Moreno.

Moreno landing almost at will toward the beginning of this round. Vic is stunned. Moreno to the belly! Moreno with a big uppercut! Vic cannot land now, and his offense is his best defense. Great right from Moreno. He continues to win. Vic is huffing and puffing and landing every time Vic comes inside. Moreno is too fast and too accurate for Vic, who needs to land big to have a chance here. Vic cannot catch Moreno. He keeps trying the same thing, and it’s stopped working at all.

Moreno fighting like he knows he has it, which is a little dull and not good for him, because it gives Vic a chance. Vic pushes Moreno again but no point this time. Feeling out so far. Jabs from both men. Good left from Agbeko. They look up and both exchanfe to the body. Not the action is picking up. Mares, hits Agbeko blatantly to the back and the ref does nothing. Good round! Action action action now. Liking this fight. Agbeko starting sharper than last fight, picking up where he left off, with a good bead on Mares. Mares getting some body shots in at the end. Close round, but I gave it to Agbeko.

Mares’ face is marked up a bit already. Mares backing up. Some good exchanges in the middle of the ring. Agbeko being more aggressive than last fight. Mares lands a left to the jaw. This is high skill level boxing here. Both men look in great shape. Mares lands his first low blow, not a huge one but it was low. Mares landing more in the last minute of R2. Wild action at the end of R@ as Agbeko gets spinned around and Mares suffers a cut to the eye. It could be real trouble for Mares! Not good for team Mares, even though he won the round on my card.

Cut ruled from a punch, apparently.

Agbeko chippy, looking for revenge now when Mares goes marginally low, which is throwing off his style. Agbeko throwing pretty wild right now. Chippy fight, no surprised there. Ref warned Agbeko twice for holding the head, hasn’t said anything about a couple of borderline lowish blows from Mares.

10-9 Mares, 38-38

Mares is beating Agbeko to the punch. Not really hurting him, but definitely landing the better shots.

I don’t think Mares really wants to fight going back, but he is doing a pretty good job. The difference right now is that Mares is throwing tighter punches. Both men exchange to the body. Pretty good round and pretty good fight.Tight. These guys know each other and are fighting with smart aggression. Good end to that round. Very close.

48-47 Mares, but I could see that one either way.

Another good round. Both men going at it but fighting smart too. These two are just a good match. I think Mares, though, is landing about 5 punches for every three or four from Agbeko. Neither man slowing down. Good exchanges! Again, though, Mares is doubling it up better, if only a little. Another low blow, but none of these have been terrible. Correction: replay showd it was really low.

Press row all have it for Mares. One has it a wipeout for Mares.

Prettty close round in 7 so far. Little bit of a lull in the action. Mares not throwing this round. Maybe getting tired again? Then Mares lands one. But I don’t think Mares worked enough to win that round, even though Agbeko looks a little off. Close but this one for Agbeko.

67-66 Mares.

Mares landing consistently, and Agbeko can’t seem to put solid punches together consistently.

Agbeko 10-9, 76-76 even (I screwed up the last round).

Also, didn;t Moret call break and then Mares just kept throwing?

Mares has better fundamentals than Agbeko, and he has found a way to neurtralize Agbeko’s power punches pretty well so far.

Mares boxing well, but Agbeko finding him now and then. Agbeko coming forward. Nice jab from Agbeko. Mares not throwing much until the last 30 seconds. But then he does unleash. Mares cornered Agbeko and probably stole that round.

Good counter right from Agbeko. Then Agbeko almost throws himself off balance and falls. This fight is not out of reach for Agbeko. He is fighting pretty well now and seems to be troubling Mares a bit. Mares pulls Agbeko’s head down blatantly. Mares is a dirty fighter, plain and simple. Mares bleeding pretty good now. This is a very good fight,. Not a great fight, but quite engaging.

I though Agbeko got more work done but another close round.

86-85 Mares.

Good jabs from Agbeko. Agbeko has troubled Mares now, and the cut is the problem. Left hook from Agbeko in a nice exchange. Good stuff. Mares gets the better of those two exchanges. Close round again. Mares to the body. Agbeko needs to work harder. Mares starting to pour it on in the last minute. Ref is letting Mares punch Agbeko on the back, but Agbeko needs to quit looking away for help. Big mistake. But bad reffing too.

Mares from body work

Both men slowed down a bit. Now they turn it up again. Mares is bleeding. Mares rocks Agbeko, then Agbeko rocks Mares! Bombs away in the last 15 second. Huge blows from Mares! Damn. That was some action. Agbeko has a beard all right.

Mares steals it.

Mares comes on strong and is going for the KO. Mares strong here. Now Agbeko is standing his ground, lands one, then both men slow down. A little lull in the middle of the round. Mares no longer going for the KO. Back to boxing. Agbeko doing some work with the jab now. Mares bleeding like hell now but coming forward nonetheless. Mares comes forward with a combo. Agbeko answers with a left. Mares starts to showboat. Lame. Great exchange at the ending. I am in to this. Nice.

Another close round, but Mares landed more and a little better.

116-112 Mares.

Very good fight. Great ending to many late rounds. Great job by Mares’ corner—sort of bad reffing but not like last time or anything.

And the judges have it...

all three judges have it 118-110.

Wide scores and identical scores. A little smelly but not impossible scoring. They basically gave Mares every round they plausibly could.
