Cotto vs Margarito 2: Live Results and Round-By-Round Coverage

Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito take their personal rivalry back into the ring tonight at Madison Square Garden. (Photo by Nick Laham/Getty Images)

Tonight at 9 p.m. EST on HBO pay-per-view in the United States and BoxNation in the United Kingdom, a terrific four-fight pay-per-view that promises action from start to finish will go live from Madison Square Garden, and Bad Left Hook will be here with live, round-by-round coverage, results, and immediate post-fight analysis of each bout.

In the main event, WBA junior middleweight titlist Miguel Cotto (36-2, 29 KO) faces the man who handed him his first career loss in 2008, Mexico's highly controversial and much-hated warrior Antonio Margarito (38-7, 27 KO). Cotto is looking to not just avenge that defeat, but to "play with the health" of Margarito and his bad right eye, as he says Margarito did three years ago, when Cotto believes his opponent had loaded hand wraps.

[ Related: Cotto vs Margarito Staff Picks ]

Also on the card, Brandon Rios faces John Murray in a fight that went from perceived blowout (if action-packed blowout) to a potential upset in the making after Rios failed to make weight yesterday. The WBA lightweight title will be on the line for Murray to win only. In an IBF welterweight eliminator, Mike Jones takes on Sebastian Lujan. And in the pay-per-view opener, junior middleweights Pawel Wolak and Delvin Rodriguez look to resume the carnage of their July 15 Fight of the Year candidate.

It should be an explosive night of boxing, so join us this evening.

What will be the best bout of the night? I think it will come down between the Puerto Rican-Mexican and Polish-Dominican duels.

Jones vs Lujan Round 1

I like Jones’ new haircut. Crowd is pretty packed already.

Jones with a little right uppercut, Lujan coming straight at him as usual. Feeling out for the first minute. Jones pawing his left hand out. Four touching jabs now from Jones. Body shots from Lujan, one back from Jones. Jab from Lujan, now Jones going to the body. Lujan holding onto the top rope. Nice right hand from Mike Jones stings Lujan and backs him up! Lujan coming forward again, Jones just sort of picking him apart at range.

Mike Jones is really damn good, I underestimated him coming in here. He is being smarter, siting down on his punches and pressing the pressure fighter without getting into bad spots.

Jones vs Lujan Round 2

Jones with a nice left hook to start the round. Lujan just coming right in. Big uppercut staggers Lujan! Then he just recovers and bounces around. Jones is looking very good so far. Sharp, hard shots. Lujan looks too slow for Mike. Lujan with a left hook, but Jones comes back with better shots, including nice body work, as he showed in the JSK rematch. Lujan stung again. Jones really picking him apart. Looks like Lujan is gonna get iced at some point. Jones looks terrific in there.

Jones fighting patiently, smart, and landing good shots. Lujan holding the arm. Two good rights to the body by Mike Jones. More good body shots from Jones. He’s really getting better, Lujan’s no joke. Lujan badly misses a left hook.

Jones vs Lujan Round 3

Two good rights to the body from Jones. Jones just putting on a class show in this one. Lujan doesn’t look any different than usual. Right hand from Jones, Lujan being pushed back when Jones comes forward. Not there to meet Jones. He knows he’s in with a superior fighter, and is trying to find a way in, but can’t. Crowd getting restless here, but this is just an outclassing. Perfectly active fight, as Lampley says.

Jones vs Lujan Round 4

Lujan starting to come forward even harder, and landing some shots. he’s throwing leather now. Jones pops him with two jobs. But man, Lujan is heating up. Left hook and a body shot. Lujan eats a little left, but raelly eats it and just keeps throwing. This is getting a little rougher, and that’s all Lujan can do here. He’s fighting. Another left from Lujan. Lujan really taking over this round. Not a lot of big shots, but great pressure and good work. Jones pops a couple jabs.

Jones back to really popping him with jabs again. Jones starting to rip him with counters, including a four-punch combo. Lujan still pressing really nicely, but this is a big Mike Jones bounce-back round here. Lujan’s insistence on keeping his hands low is goofy. Jones drills him with a right. Lujan says no no no, but yes yes yes.

Jones just picking him apart. This has become less intriguing as it’s gone on despite that one round where Lujan had some success. Pretty one-sided, and not brutally so or anything. Just a superior boxer and too good for Lujan. Little more to it than that. THERE’S a hard little left hook from Mike Jones. Jones landing all the best punches. He’s picking it up just a bit, but eh. Jones totally in control. Pop pop pop. Time to step Jones up after this one. Lujan fights with no urgency. He’s an incredibly relaxed guy, winning or losing. Lujan with shots to the body, nothing on them. Jones rocks him a little again. This is easy pickings for Jones. Lujan straighted up on a body shot and uppercut. Lujan just leaves his hands down on the ropes. Lujan is getting totally dominated and doesn’t care.

Wolak vs Rodriguez Round 1

Wolak coming forward, Rodriguez digging to the body. Rodriguez jabbing as he moves back. Wolak charging right at him as always. Left hook body, left hook jaw from Delvin. Left hook upstairs, right to the body from Delvin. He looks really good so far. Left hook Wolak, and Rodriguez counters, but Wolak keeps coming right to him.

Delvin definitely starting quicker than last time. Bodes well for him. Left hook body from Delvin, Wolak with a right upstairs. Wolak starting to block Rodriguez’s left hook. Rodriguez with a right down the pipe. Both throw rights. Uppercut Rodriguez lands. I scored this one for Delvin, but Pawel is being Pawel. Good fight already.

Wolak marking up under the eyes already I think. Wolak really coming forward more effective than usual. I gotta tell ya — JIM I GOTTA TELL YA — he IS boxing smarter. Still being himself, but boxing smarter. Delvin still landing good shots along the way. Wolak’s pressure is nice. Rodriguez with a right. Delvin not landing the hard shots he did in first round, which were keeping him in it. But Wolak is outworking. Delvin with big shots down the stretch here.

Rodriguez with a little right to the body. Fighting close again, toe to toe at center ring. Wolak with a short right uppercut, right in response from Delvin.

Rodriguez wailing away on Wolak and Pawel is a little hurt. Those right hands are working big time. Rodriguez looks like his jaw might be damaged. They’re trading and just unloading on each other. Wolak loses mouthpiece. Cut isn’t in a bad place or anything. Rodriguez letting his hands go. He’s going to need pick up his pace. Rodriguez running from Wolak and that’s not gonna get a good response from an NYC crowd.

Rodriguez started to back off big time this round. He’s tired and his jaw still looks ewird. Wolak fighting hard. Rodriguez coming right back at him when it gets into close quarters. Like Wolak’s body work and his pressure, but a very close round.

Lederman has Rodriguez up 87-84.

Right hand Rodriguez. Wolak getting in with him, but Rodriguez just coming and coming with better shots. uppercut and a right from Wolak. Rodriguez unloading and Wolakis hurting! Rodriguez coming and wolak is barely up! WOLAK GETTING UNLOADED UPON BUT HE STAYS ON HIS FEET! RODRIGUEZ TRYING TO CLOSE THE SHOW! WOLAK IN A BAD WAY AND HE’S THROWING PUNCHES BACK!

Slows down, but then RODRIGUEZ DRILLS HIM AGAIN! RIGHT HANDS LANDING! Rodriguez WANTS the knockout! Left hook from Rodriguez — he JUMPS with it!

Rodriguez is just drilling him this round. Rodriguez CHOPPING AWAY again! He’s trying to put this away with 10 seconds to go! Wolak will not go down!

That’s a 10-8 with no knockdown. GREAT finish from Delvin.

Nice to see Rodriguez finally get the nod in a fight that wasn't completely blatant

I thought there was little chance he would lose, and frankly the scores were a bit wider than they should have been, but still happy. At worst, I thought he clearly beat Jackiewicz as well.

Rios looks gaunt still

Right hand Rios. Right to body, left hook from Rios. Murray right on top of him. Both are just fighting inside. Rios to the body with a right, Murray throwing left hooks. Right hand Rios upstairs. Murray with a shot to the body. Rios winning the inside fight, landing harder shots.

OK, think net issues fixed.

Murray really hanging in. Rios still looks the stronger puncher, and better combo puncher. Murray hurt! A minute left in the round. Rios with great uppercuts inside. Both hands. Over and over with the uppercuts.

Now Murray standing his ground. Murray with a great little flurry near the end of the round. Murray with a hard uppercut. This is a good ass fight.

Murray is the one pushing this fight right now. Rios with an uppercut, but Murray is just stronger. Rios all arm punches. To his credit, he is fighting his ass off. But he’s not going to win this thing if Murray keeps pressing, I think.

Murray taking over. Rios still landing uppercuts. Ugh, CALL THE FUCKING FIGHT CALL THE FUCKING FIGHT CALL THE FUCKING FIGHT CALL THE FUCKING FIGHT CALL THE FUCKING FIGHT

Rios vs Murray Round 6

Rios looks like he’s totally spent, but he’s trying with what he’s got in him.

Murray stings him with a left uppercut right away. Rios coming on a bit. Left to the body, now with the uppercuts again. Rios eats a left hook. Uppercut from Murray. Rios to the body again. Left hook body from Murray. Rios with three uppercuts and a hook. Nasty hook from Murray. Murray’s nose is probably broken. Rios has taken over so hard in this round. MAN is he fighting.

This is a FIGHT by God. Deserves a much better crowd reaction than it’s getting.

Rios’ uppercuts have taken this round. This is a fucking brawl here. No defense, just punching punching punching. This is a goddamn good fight. MSG isn’t living up to its “boxing fan” reputation here. Sad. This is quieter than Vegas would be.

Rios vs Murray Round 7

Right to the head Murray, right to the body Rios. Left hook Rios. Rios has found a second wind and starting to physically take this over. Murray fighting back with a three-punch combination.

HBO team patently refuses to call the fucking fight. These guys are terrible.

Earl Brown calling time to deduct a point from Murray for a low blow. I believe he did warn him once or twice earlier, and it was low.

Commentator Drama

You’ve got to figure the focus on dressing room drama, etc is specifically ordered by the execs who want to generalize the experience from boxing (and so make it more like reality TV). I think of the NFL as the worst in this department.

The question I have is that, with the revenue model being PPV and so not at all sensitive to channel surfing, is it really effing necessary?

Cotto vs Margarito Round 1

NO. TOUCHING. GLOVES.

Right hand from Cotto. Right hand Cotto again after a left. Margarito is huge compared to Cotto. Just huge.

Cotto with two jabs. Margo ducks a left hook and a right. Left hook to the body from Cotto. He looks relaxed and sharp. But Margarito hunting. left hook from Cotto. Cotto beating him to the punch. Left hook Cotto, Margo gets in a good body shot. Right hand Cotto, stiff jab Cotto.

Margarito jabbing. Staying calm. Good right Cotto! Good right Margarito! Neither man budging so far. Three punch combo and a left hook from Cotto. Cotto with a right, Margarito with a right. Margarito looks very slow. Left hook Cotto. Margarito hunting, but definitely a Cotto round.

Cotto vs Margarito Round 2

Cotto with a right, then a left hook to the body. Smoger warns for a low shot? Not low at all. Cotto complains about a right to the hip, though. Fair’s fair, I guess.

Cotto blocks a right. Nice left hook from Cotto. Margarito with a body shot at the same time. Right hand Cotto. Cotto with another hard right. Margo very slow, but still: Staying calm, stalking, being Margarito.

Left hook Cotto. Cotto with another left hook. Cotto staiyng way off the ropes. BIG left hook from Cotto. Margarito short on an uppercut. Cotto with another good shot. Crowd is responding to everything Miguel does.

Cotto doing great stuff so far. Margarito cannot catch him with power shots. Cotto circling, circling, and landing the hard blows. Body shots from both. Margarito almost corners him, but round ends.

Cotto vs Margarito Round 4

Margarito’s eye is closing to start the round.

Cotto pops him with another left — Margarito eggs him on, taps his own eye. Wow.

Margarito so slow, but he’s chasing. Uppercut and left hook from Cotto. Cotto turning and taking good angles. Right hand Cotto! Got Margarito looking to the body. Margarito chasing, but Cotto gets away. Margo really trying to get him on the ropes, but not successful so far. Another left lands hard. Right hand Margarito is a bit to the left.

Cotto pops him again. Margarito throwing close, but Cotto’s smothering his power there. Right hand and left hook Cotto after a left from Margarito. Margarito with an uppercut inside. Right left from Cotto. Margarito is coming on hard. Cotto witha nother left hook.

Cotto winning the fight, but Margarito is getting to him. Cotto is obsessed with that eye — maybe to a detriment. Forehead to forehead, Margarito cant’ land. But he’s smiling. Cotto with a left hook. Margarito continuing to taunt and goes, “WOOOO!”

But this is Cotto’s fight. Big right hand Cotto! Jab and a right, Margarito goes “WOOOO!” again.

Cotto vs Margarito Round 5

Margarito shoots a left. Cotto moving, and there’s a four-punch combo from Cotto. Margarito cant’ stop anything. he’s still tougher than hell and pressures nicely, but he’s having a lot of trouble here.

Cotto near the ropes, but fights his way off. Right hand Cotto. Margarito is starting to get him to the ropes. Cotto with three shots, Margarito shrugs it off and pushes him back to the ropes. Cotto slips out again. So far he’s slipping nicely. Uppercut from Margarito lands. That was THE weapon.

Cotto shouldering up and pushing him back. Left hand Cotto. Fight is heating up.

Right hand and left grazes from Cotto. Margarito is verbally taunting Cotto. Cotto trying to catch him coming in. But he’s not hurting Tony. Tony REALLY coming at him. Right to the body by Margarito, and a good one. Cotto slips away. He’s on the roeps, and again fights off.

Cotto with a hook to the body. Jab Margarito, jab Cotto.

Left hook Cotto again. He’s moving to start the round. GOOD left hook from Cotto. Margarito eats a hard jab, and a HARD right. Margarito fires the left uppercut. Jab Cotto. Margarito refuses to stop stalking. Margarito’s uppercuts coming now — three shots, and Cotto lands in return.

Right hand Cotto. Left hook upstairs from Cotto. Margarito is feeling those. Three shots from Cotto break the guard. Left hook body from Cotto, and a right upstairs. Left hook upstairs Cotto, but Margarito right on top of him and throwing, and landing. Right hand Cotto, and he holds the arm away from Smoger’s vision.

Right eye is closed shut, or damn close to it.

Cotto continuing to move. Crowd chanting for him. Margarito with a long right, and that caught Cotto. Left uppercut gets in. cotto with a left hook, then another left hook gets in. Margarito to the body, hard jab to Cotto. Jab, Cotto ducks under a shot, right hand is short.

Cotto moving, boxing, and a BIG shot gets in. Margarito is just too slow for him so far. Margarito badly misses a 1-2. But he’s still pressuring. Cotto continues to outland and land harder. Cotto gets Margarito on the ropes, but Margarito lands a couple uppercuts as they get close. Margarito with two little body shots. Cotto pushes him to the ropes and holds on.

Cotto with a right hand at the bell.

Cotto moving and throwing. Left hook to the body. Margarito still just marching forward. Cotto circling the ring, throwing. Margarito paws at his left eye just a bit. Cotto jabs, Margarito with a left to the body. Margarito throwing more.

Tape comes loose on Cotto’s glove, time called.

Time in, Margarito jabbing and stalking. Two hard lefts from Cotto. Right hand Cotto! Miguel’s stamina is getting tested. He’s in constant motion. Left hand Cotto, ducks a left from Margarito. Right to the body from Margarito. Cotto leading him on another goose chase.

Cotto with another combo, pops the eye again. That thing is in bad shape. Not Pacquiao fight bad, but bad. Margarito to the body, but Cotto RIPS HIM WITH A LEFT HOOK! BAM! That was nasty!

Cotto vs Margarito Round 9

Tough moment where it looked like it was being stopped. BUT DOC. SAID. LET ’EM ROLL.

But here we go again.

Cotto starting to crowd him now. Margarito with pot shots. Rights to the head and body, but just slaps in close as they tie up. Left hook Cotto again. He’s moving, turning Margarito around. Margarito too slow. Left hook again. Cotto on the move.

Left hook body Margarito, three shots in return from Cotto. Margarito verbally taunting again. Cotto continues to come at him. Honestly, this round it’s Cotto pressuring. LEFT HOOK AND ANOTHER ONE! Cotto is coming for him.

Looks like Cotto has no more fear of Margarito’s power.

Left again by Cotto. Right hand and big left from Cotto! Margarito trying hard, but he’s got nothing.

Cotto said he feels “nothing” when he looks at Margarito, and that when he went over there afterward, it was to “taste his victory” over Margo.

Margo said that Cotto hits like a girl, and that he was building, and that his eye was fine.

The Doctor said that Margo’s eyes were closing over the last three rounds, and was completely swelled shut.
