Brandon Rios Makes Weight at 9 a.m., Fight With John Murray Still On

Tris Dixon of Boxing News reports via Twitter this morning that now-former WBA lightweight titlist Brandon Rios made weight at his Saturday morning weigh-in just moments ago, hitting 146.4 pounds on the scales, meaning that his fight tonight with John Murray is still good to go.

Rios (28-0-1, 21 KO) looked ghostly pale and thin yesterday when he weighed in over the 135-pound limit. After getting an extra hour to make the weight, he still couldn't burn it off, and in the end, after several attempts, he gave up his title on the scales, agreed to pay Murray $20,000 of his purse, and weigh-in at 9 a.m. this morning with the agreement that he couldn't go over 147 pounds. All of that so the fight could stay on the card. And it will.

Murray (31-1, 18 KO) became a legitimate threat to win this fight. At this point, the last thing Rios needs is a loss to pile on top of this whole mess. Hopefully he's not going into the ring a mess tonight.

Murray, on his end, weighed in at 134 pounds yesterday and looked in fantastic shape.

I have to wonder what he did to himself to make weight.

Wouldn’t we all like to know. I’m sure the last two days have been an awful experience. I wish him well tonight

Other than losing, I don’t think he’s in grave danger or anything, but it wouldn’t surprise me a bit if he just fainted in the ring and needed emergency re-hydration. I do hope they’re watching out for him.

I hope you’re right. I’m a bit less optimistic about what might happen, though.

by DrRck on Dec 3, 2011 10:17 AM EST up reply actions

you’re right, dehydration is dangerous. I’m telling myself he’ll be carefully watched by all concerned, ref, corner, manager—none of them can be happy about it.

There are 8 fighters on tonight, and 2 are abnormally endangered imo. That’s 25%, which is a lot.

I hope that whoever is watching Rios is disinterested, and has no stake in the outcome.

Forgive me; I’ve become a bit jaded and sceptical.

Referee is always the best hope. Even so, the others’ self-interest should protect Rios, the idiot, some, no percentage in a dead kid.

I’ll take your advice, and watch the ref.

I hope this doesn’t turn out to be something bad.

Maybe instead of clowning around for the 25/7 cameras he shouldve been concentrating on making weight. I hope he gets his ass kicked

Yea. Definitely a guy I love to root against.

I’m still feeling a big KO by Rios. Hope we get the unofficial weights tonight.

by BloodMeridian on Dec 3, 2011 11:46 AM EST reply actions

Personally, although Rios definitely did look weakened, i don’t think it’s going to be quite the big issue that some do. I think once he fully rehydrates he will be at least 75% of his usual self….. At least….. And a 75% Rios is enough to beat Murray, imo.
It could make for a more competitive fight though
Saying that it partly depends on how he lost the weight (did he leave it too much, too late?) and whethte rhe has underestimated Murray and not trained as hard as usual.
I think the latter point is unlikely and i’m also certain it’s more to do with Riso just being too big for Lightweight now.
This will be his last fight at 135. (No shit, Sherlock! :)

As I understand it they won’t let him fully rehydrate, that is, on fight day he has to only have gained 10 lbs., which might still be a little low for where he’s at now.

I just want to point out...

that Rios will definitely be heavier than the 147 limit when he gets into the ring. It was a 9 AM weigh-in,which means he has more than 12 hours to add even more fluid and food. I’m willing to bet he’s 150+ in there tonight.

This is what i was going to say in reply to BoxAnne.

if he has cut the wieght incorrectly, he wont be able to put the weight back on

by properdave on Dec 3, 2011 1:33 PM EST up reply actions

why wouldn’t he be able to put the weight back on properdave?
also, what is the correct and incorrect way to cut weight?
thanks!

ohh, found a great article on cutting weight here

by jake_ash on Dec 3, 2011 1:56 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, what’s the reasoning behind this??
Weight is ten times easier to put on than take off, especially when depleting yourself and getting down to your absolute minimum.

by Matt Mosley on Dec 3, 2011 2:08 PM EST up reply actions

He may get the weight back on (water), but he won’t get the strength back on, if rumors about his rapid weight loss are true, i.e., starving himself and going without water. It takes a toll.

Maybe. But he said “he won’t be able to put the weight back on”.
He already put 12 pounds on overnight.

by Matt Mosley on Dec 3, 2011 3:38 PM EST up reply actions

because the stomach shrinks?

by properdave on Dec 3, 2011 4:39 PM EST up reply actions

You’re not sure then? What you said still doesn’t make sense.
I’m betting Rios will be around 154 by fight time. Yes, he may not be 100%, but he’ll still be bigger than Murray.
How it plays out will be interesting, but he will put weight on.

by Matt Mosley on Dec 3, 2011 4:48 PM EST up reply actions

I’m sure of how it works technically, but it’s all rumours.

Like BA said his weight may go up, but he will still be drained because his stomach will be buggered.

by properdave on Dec 3, 2011 4:59 PM EST up reply actions

HIs whole chemistry will be buggered. His stomach will be the least of it. Intense fasting without water does all kinds of weird shit to blood sugar levels, synaptic (nerve) connections, salt balance, everything, and your blood and fluids become kind of toxic, and very weakening. Guys have gotten into real trouble doing what he’s done, very severe outcomes. Often can’t finish the fight. won’t matter what he weighs. Or he may be OK, but it would be somewhat surprising.

Being a naive idiot, I really don’t understand how these guys can do this.

by DrRck on Dec 3, 2011 2:00 PM EST up reply actions

Boxanne...

if he had to fight in the condition he was in yesterday, you would have cause for concern.

Fighters like Pac and Floyd are rare in that they have the skill to fight at their weight, without cutting because they don’t need the weight advantage.

Whatever Rios was yesterday, you can bet he’s added 15 lbs or so for tonight.

Maybe I’ll write something on weight cutting in boxing, as it seems to be a lot more hush hush than it is in MMA.

by Lee Payton on Dec 3, 2011 12:53 PM EST reply actions

floyd cuts weight

not as much as some fighters in the welterweight division, but he’s probably 155+ on fight night.

by sunzlight on Dec 3, 2011 3:59 PM EST up reply actions

Guys Rios has nothing to worry about

Robert Garcia and Bob Arum are looking out for him. These are safety first kinda people. Everything will be ok…..
