Cotto vs Margarito 2 Results: Brandon Rios Grinds Out Bloody, Hard-Fought TKO Over John Murray
Though some will complain that Brandon Rios didn't make weight, the best fight of the Cotto vs Margarito undercard was indeed between Rios and Britain's rugged John Murray, as Rios stopped a bloodied, bruised, swollen and valiant Murray in the 11th round.
Rios (29-0-1, 22 KO) is likely headed to the junior welterweight or welterweight division after this, but though he fought exhausted and out of shape tonight, he showed heart of his own in grinding out this fight.
Murray (31-2, 18 KO) did have his moments and was in the fight, but in the end wasn't strong enough to seriously hurt Rios, and also just couldn't defend Rios' terrific uppercuts, which came from the right and left hands and seemed almost unstoppable.
Our live coverage continues here, with the Cotto vs Margarito rematch main event starting shortly. Here we go, folks. Here we go.

I’ll tell you what this fight reminded me of, because of the main event: Giovani Segura vs Cesar Canchila I. Co-feature to Cotto-Margs I, and Vegas crowd didn’t care despite it being a fantastic fight.

As good as that victory was.
He didn’t make weight and he lost his belt anyway.
A Pyrrhic victory.
Thats me and Marco Antonio Barrera in the profile picture.
I’m sure Rios, and his camp, don’t care much about “losing” the belt. Everyone knows he’s done as a LW.
They care. He wouldn’t have tried that hard to make weight if he didn’t. The fighters care about those belts. They’re validation and leverage.

he fought exhausted
He looked pretty good to me at the end.

I believe that was determination, Ted — he did get a second wind later in the fight as his shots added up on Murray’s face.

i thought he tried to make weight simply because he’s contracted to do so and it’s honorable to give it your all to make it fair…but eh—could’ve been for the belt I suppose lol
The point is he couldn’t make weight, not “he didn’t try hard enough.” He just couldn’t. It’s not like he thought, “Ah fuck the belt, who cares?” He cares about the belt and didn’t want to lose it on the scales. He tried not to. Obviously he also didn’t want to give up the $20,000 he had to. Obviously he tried to make the weight because that was the weight. But no, he didn’t brush off the belt like it doesn’t matter.

Rios is going to be shot in a couple of years or less
all the weight draining and the unnecessary punches he takes for some macho/chicano bullshit is going to ruin him.
He is already slurring badly.
Didn’t enjoy seeing him taking punches on purpose .
Thats just stupid

you either make weight like a professional or you don’t. period.
there’s no excuse for showing up over weight, nor is there an excuse for any other behavior as a professional. you want to get paid to fight? you fight on a contracted date, at a contracted weight.
this isn’t the wild west. and it’s not a parking lot.
