Maidana vs Alexander Will Take Place in February

Well it looks like the rumors from last week turned out to be true with the two Golden Boy fighters looking to get it on. The Ring's Lem Satterfield says that Marcos Maidana and Devon Alexander are officially headed for a February date.

In a twist that was announced last week, both fighters will be at the welterweight limit. Strange mostly because both fighters made their names in the junior welterweight division, and both of them are currently near the top of that division. Marcos Maidana last fought at the welterweight limit in 2006 while Devon Alexander last fought at the welterweight limit in 2007. Therefore, it is difficult to imagine how either of these fighters will deal with the extra weight.

Conventional knowledge would say that the brawler Maidana would have an easier time with the weight since he does not rely on speed and timing the way that Alexander does. However, the extra weight could make the already slow Maidana very easy to hit and very easy to avoid. Regardless of who carries the weight better, I think Maidana has the advantage going in to this fight. He has looked far better than Alexander recently and brings a style that gives Alexande trouble. If Alexander had trouble with Lucas Matthysse, then I would imagine that he would have trouble with Marcos Maidana as well, even though Matthysse is a little bit more of a boxer. The straight ahead pressure is going to bother Alexander, and hopefully the judges will know the difference between a landed punch and punch volume.

After his last couple of "wins," I do not rate Alexander highly and I think that this is a terrible style matchup for him. If Golden Boy can swing it, I would like to see the winner of this matchup face Paulie Malignaggi. Paulie has called out both of these guys and seems to be the third wheel. Anyways, who do you think has the advantage in this fight and do you see any decent future fights after this one for either fighter?

Cunningham said months ago that Alexander was going to 147, so it’s really no surprise and I’m not sure why people are treating it as such, but that’s people for you.

Maidana beats him, unless it’s in St. Louis, then he just beats him but it doesn’t say so.

If this is in St. Louis, Maidana’s people should be shot.

The real problem is there is nowhere else this fight can draw.

Agreed, but how can you agree to this fight there when it is patently clear you can’t win a decision under any circumstances? I’d have preferred Maidana fight Paulie in NY (which I think would have been a surprisingly entertaining contest), where at least he’d have a shot at a decision win.

Hopefully it’s a 12 round fight. I felt Alexander would have been stopped by Matthysse if the fight had gone 12 and he gassed badly against Kotelnik who is not a puncher. I’ve grown very tired of Alexander since the Kotelnik fight…The Bradley fight was horrible and he seemed too eager to have the fight stopped. The Matthyse fight was 10 rounds for a reason… I hope Maidana makes him earn his paycheck,

Also, Maidana by TKO. He’ll walk through Alexander’s pitty-pat punches and put a hurting on Devon.

I hope either Maidana trucks him OR Alexander gets a little incentive to fight back with conviction. Then we might have a good fight!

and do you see any decent future fights after this one for either fighter?

to me, every madaina fight is must see. would pay to see him fight hopkins or sergio mora even! would love to see the obvious ones: rematches with ortiz, khan or a fight with matthysse. could happen as they’re all in the same golden boy stable…

although i see alexander trying to make this a boring fight throwing 1,000 short jabs from the outside yelling louder than a female tennis player and winning rounds if it’s in his hometown.

also, dan rafael tweeted : “Talks going on for a Feb HBO opening fight to match Kirkland with Delvin Rodriguez on proposed Maidana-Alexander undercard. #boxing” !!!

Great style clash

that would be a great double header. I like Kirkland by KO in a good fight.

Im a little disapointed to see Maidana move up to 147 just as Rios is coming up to 140

I really really want a Maidana rios fight!!!

And all of a sudden this 147 category is becoming heated again!

I don’t want to see Maidana fighting anyone if it’s not Brandon Rios or Lucas Matthysse. And I don’t want to see Paulie Malignaggi fighting anyone.

by ham_napkin on Dec 6, 2011 6:29 AM EST reply actions

agreed on both points.
