With his induction into the hall of fame today I had to wonder, who the hell would beat him today? He only lost to two fighters in his prime, Leonard and Hagler, both ATGs. Other than that he destroyed pretty much everyone, including a devastating knockout of Duran (yes I know styles make fights, but it was still awesome).
So my question is, would anyone from welterweight to middleweight today beat Tommy Hearns in his prime? Hearns was 6'1" with a long reach, great handspeed, and one of the greatest right hands of all time. He would be a tough match-up for anyone in any era.
In this era, it's hard to even imagine anyone fighting Tommy. Would Arum throw Pacquiao in there with him? Would Floyd risk his 0 against such a dangerous opponent? Would Martinez have a chance against him? Would Julio Cesar Chavez Junior be the one guy with all the right tools to beat the Motor City Cobra?
And no Tommy was not an indestructible killing machine. He had a suspect chin and iffy stamina. But his package of physical traits and boxing skill was still very difficult to combat.
I'm eager to hear from guys steeped in boxing history on this. I've only watched Hearns on youtube and was too young to watch when he was fighting.
