Japanese Scene: Hasegawa, Nishioka & Ao in April Tripleheader

Sidney Boquiren has news of a coming tripleheader from Japan featuring a very intriguing main-event.

According to Yomiuri Online, three of Japan’s top fighters will participate in a tripleheader this spring. Hozumi Hasegawa, Toshiaki Nishioka, and Takahiro Ao are set to defend their titles on April 8 at Tokyo’s Ryogoku Kokugikan.

Opponents were also announced and clearly Hasegawa’s fight will be most anticipated, as he will face Mexican star Jhonny Gonzalez. The smooth southpaw made a successful comeback in November, moving up two weight classes and claimed the WBC featherweight crown with a unanimous decision over previously undefeated Juan Carlos Burgos. Just seven months prior to the jump, Hasegawa suffered a surprisingly abrupt stoppage loss at the hands of Fernando Montiel.

The Teiken tandem of Nishioka and Ao meet with Mauricio Munoz and Humberto Gutierrez respectively.

Hasegawa-Gonzalez might be the fight currently on the schedule that excites me most, honestly.

That's the only fight I am REALLY excited about

I don’t know much about Munoz and Gutierrez, but Hasegawa-Gonzalez should be fun while it lasts. Early reports say that the southpaw wants to unveil a “new” style, which I believe simply translates into stating he wants to use his footwork and speed rather than try to prove something by standing and trading. That’s not new for Hasegawa, of course, but we haven’t seen it in a while. Whatever he plans though, the Mexican is a knockout or be knocked out type guy, so we’ll see if Hasegawa has learned from the Montiel debacle or not.

Gutierrez from the little I’ve seen of him is solid. Talented. But nothing special. His fight against Vitali Tajbert was a letdown and pretty dull, though.

I love these Asian cards. Almost always stacked

but Hasegawa-Gonzalez is going to be a great fight. Hopefully Ao can win and then set up a fight with Uchiyama when he is healthy.
