Bad Left Hook Live Boxing Results and Commentary: Vitali Klitschko v. Odlanier Solis

Today at 5pm EDT live on Epix and EpixHD.com in the U.S., Vitali Klitschko will take on Cuban hopeful Odlanier Solis from the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany. Bad Left Hook will be here with live, round-by-round coverage, scoring and analysis during and immediately following the fight. Those who are without Epix can watch the fight live today on their web site by taking the free trial offer, which a ton of people are doing.

For those who might have missed our preview of the bout, you can read that by clicking here. Solis is a heavy underdog, but I think can be fairly called the best opponent Klitschko has faced since returning to the sport in 2008. He also came in at a relatively trim 246 pounds on the scales for the fight, which is probably still 15-20 pounds over what most believe his ideal fighting weight would be, but it's an improvement, and right around his professional career low. Klitschko, for the record, came in at 249 pounds, but is a bit over five inches taller than Solis, too.

There won't be a televised undercard on the Epix broadcast, and the Sky Sports airing in the U.K. will start at 4:30 EDT with a Commonwealth super featherweight fight between Liam Walsh (10-0, 7 KO) and Jon Kays (13-1, 4 KO) from Wigan. For those interested, the undercard in Cologne features the following bouts:

Cruiserweights: Ola Afolabi (15-2-3, 6 KO) v. Lubos Suda (23-4-1, 15 KO)

Cruiserweights: Nuri Seferi (29-6, 18 KO) v. Jozsef Nagy (24-9, 15 KO)

Welterweights: Stefan Worth (10-1-1, 3 KO) v. Ferenc Zold (11-4, 5 KO)

Heavyweights: Michael Sprott (35-15, 17 KO) v. Serdar Uysal (13-2-2, 6 KO)

Cruiserweights: Hizni Altunkaya (15-0, 8 KO) v. Dirk Mandelartz (7-4-3, 3 KO)

I almost don't want to believe that "Dirk Mandelartz" is a real name. It sounds like something a Steve Martin character would come up with.

But this UI is terrible. No fullscreen? “Get a Free Trial!” button that persists after you’ve signed in with your free trial login, and won’t go away? Are they hosting this thing on a geocities page?

They’re giving you free access to a subscription service and letting you watch the only thing you signed up for, fully aware that it’s the only thing you signed up for. I say take the idiotic floating thing and pray they can handle the server load.

The good thing about them calling the fight from a studio is you can turn the volume down low enough to barely hear them and yet still hear the crowd and sounds of the fight.

I actually appreciate the volume levels they’re keeping here. Usually they have the commentators just over a barely audible fight and crowd.

I mean for fights where they do overseas stuff from a studio — Integrated Sports does this and it’s just brutal. ESPN does it for the rare overseas stuff they do online. This sounds a bit more organic than this setup usually does.

Rigondeaux-Casey R1

Great crowd. Two southpaws. Rigondeaux hurts him with a body shot and now Guillermo is just tearing into him. Casey is in trouble already. Casey has no hope. I’m sorry, he’s a great underdog story, but unless Rigondeaux lets him, he’s not lasting long here. Rigondeaux still targeting the body. Casey shoots a right, but gets hit with a left and drops to the canvas. Not a hard knockdown, but a real one. He’s up, but Rigondeaux is just throttling him. He’s way, way too good. This is the Rigondeaux I’d love to see more of. He’s HUGE LEFT HAND AND CASEY IS BACK DOWN!

This is embarrassingly one-sided. This is Guillermo Rigondeaux the amateur legend. This tough fucker is going to keep fighting, and finally they call it off.

I don’t really speak French, but I did take some french courses and they taught us about the 4 different accents… in either of the classes that I took they never told us to stress all syllables the same…

From Wikipedia:

French words are sometimes said to be stressed on the final syllable. In fact, however, it may be said that French has no word stress at all; instead, stress is placed on the final syllable (or, if the final is a schwa, the next-to-final syllable) of a string of words. This string may be equivalent to a clause or a phrase. When a word is said alone, its last syllable is also the end of the phrase, so the stress is placed ther

So, it depends on the sentence? No wonder I was never able to learn French.

French isn't an accentual-syllabic language at all like English

they do have 4 different accents for syllables though…

do you mean the diacritcal marks like accent grave, accent acute, etc?

If so, yes, but that’s different than what English speakers think of as accent—syllables that alternate between stressed and unstressed. More of a sound thing than an emphasis thing if that makes any sense.

I guess I should’ve told you that I am a native Spanish speaker so I’m not really thinking in English…

Spanish is also accental syllabic like English

In Spanish, the accent (there’s only one) is the one that determines where the emphasis goes… when I took French, it seemed the 4 accents worked the same way, with a few variations of course

I don't speak it

but people all around me did, took it in college, can figure it out if it’s written. But I can pronounce it reasonbly well, the way you can if you heard it with young ears, and you’re right about the non-accented words, rather the phrases are marked by an accented ender. It’s what gives French its cadence.

I speak midling French and bad Spanish, but I learned about the nuances of French meter

when I took a French poetry class (taught in French) that was a part of the language requirement for my Ph.D.

actually, took 3 yrs in hs, took German in college, can’t speak either one of them. Good enough mimic to get the pronunciation close tho.

seriously, if neither of my teachers told be about how the pronunciation is determined by the string of words, no wonder I never learned French… when I took French, it seemed so arbitrary to me, it really didn’t make any sense to me and I would ask the professors and they would just shrug and say: “that’s just how it is” and these are two very different professors in two different countries

Wouldn’t surprise me at all. Look at who Bute is facing. Magee shouldn’t be in a championship fight
