Friday Night Fights Live Results and Coverage: Erislandy Lara v. Carlos Molina

The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas (east view) Tonight at 10pm EDT on ESPN2 and ESPN3.com, Friday Night Fights is live with a double-header in the 154-pound division. Cubans Erislandy Lara (15-0, 10 KO) and Yudel Jhonson (9-0, 6 KO) are the featured attractions, taking on Carlos Molina (17-4-1, 5 KO) and Richard Gutierrez (26-5-1, 16 KO) respectively.

The fight is being held at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, and is the first-ever fight card at the new resort, which opened in December. So not only do you get to see the fights tonight, but boxing in a brand-new venue for the first time.

To my great surprise, Molina is actually still the opponent for Lara. That one seemed like a really good bet for a late pull-out and replacement opponent, but Molina will be fighting tonight, for the first time since June 2009. Jhonson-Gutierrez is the fight we're far more likely to learn from, most notably how good Jhonson really might be. Gutierrez is just an opponent at this point, but a credible gatekeeper.

We'll have live coverage of both fights, plus commentary and maybe some scoring, and definitely plenty of Friday night conversation during the card, so come on by.

Whoomp! There it is!

if Molina can recapture the form he had before the layoff, I think he has a chance to upset Lara. He’s capable of some subtle moves in there, especially on the inside. This’ll be a good measuring stick to see if Lara is truly a top level guy

I’m skeptical of anyone who hasn’t fought in two years being a test.

There will be a separate post that goes up around 10:45 for Solo Boxeo, which starts at 11:30. I figure by the time Escalante is in the ring, this will be over and we can get DOUBLE COVERAGE tonight.

Hey there BLHers. Don’t know about you, but I’m already starved for more boxing and psyched about getting back in the swing of things. This is an above average FNF card—with a nice long week of boxing. BEGINNING NOW. And yes, I’m here for the double header tonight.

Where are the FNF regulars tonight? You all out there?

Why is Lara so damn inactive. If I was in his corner, I would be chewing his ass out.

Molina 10-9, 69-64 same. And while Lara is fighting a dumb fight, I really think this is folks not giving Molina credit for genuinely being very good.

I’m giving Molina lots of credit. He wins this fight and he enters my top 10 at 154. This is tremendously impressive especially considering the layoff.

God knows what the judges have considering the connections here. But if this holds up and the right guy wins, neat boxing debut at the Cosmopolitan.

I hate to generalize this way, but to me a lot of the Cubans are sort of aloof or overconfident. Or both. Lara showed a lot of that tonight, IMO.

10-9 Lara, Molina 96-94

I really think Molina deserves this W, and Lara’s dropping a couple spots in my rankings even if he wins. Molina fought his guts out. Lara looked very iffy tonight. VERY iffy.

Once more, I say I am not imprssed with these so-called “Cuban Sensations.” Two have been exposed recently and more will be in the future. Gamboa is the only one at this point I really like.

Yeah, it's sort of like a brand now ("CUBAN SENSATION") that gets applied long before it's really earned.
