Bad Left Hook Live Results and Coverage: Juan Manuel Lopez v. Orlando Salido

Orlando Salido and Juan Manuel Lopez renew the Mexico-Puerto Rico boxing rivalry tonight on Showtime. (Photo by Tom Casino/SHOWTIME)

Showtime goes live from Puerto Rico tonight with a two-fight card at 10:30pm EDT. In the main event, Juan Manuel Lopez (30-0, 27 KO) faces gritty veteran Orlando Salido (34-11-2, 22 KO), and in the co-feature at 130 pounds, Luis Cruz (17-0, 14 KO) takes his first real test against Martin Honorio (29-5-1, 15 KO).

Bad Left Hook will have live coverage of the main event, following our coverage of the Berto-Ortiz fight on HBO.

A bit from our preview:

I'm not picking the upset here, because I don't think Salido is quite the right guy to beat Lopez. But I will say this: Lopez better not be as overconfident as he has seemed at times, because Salido is a smarter, better fighter than Concepcion or Mtagwa. And if those guys can trouble Lopez even a little (and Mtagwa troubled him a lot), then Salido can trouble him plenty enough to score an upset. A weekend after plenty of surprises, this one has an outside chance at topping them all. But I'm still going with the favorite. Pick: Juan Manuel Lopez UD-12

Join us tonight!

I'm jumping over here

Haven’t seen Honorio or Cruz and I’m trying to get to know as many boxers as possible.

by ColtJouvet on Apr 16, 2011 10:26 PM EDT reply actions

Cruz-Honorio Rd 1

Early feeling out period is interrupted by a brief flurry from both fighters. Honorio bounces around and fires a body shot. Cruz throws a wide right and misses. Honorio with more wide body shots, a few landing. Cruz with a good counter right. Cruz is the counter puncher so far.

10-9 Honorio

by ColtJouvet on Apr 16, 2011 10:48 PM EDT reply actions

Cruz-Honorio Rd 2

Honorio not setting up a jab before coming in for body shots, and Cruz lands a uppercut. Honorio with a good right. Big right from Cruz as they separate. Honorio really pressuring. Cruz doing well with counters, particularly the uppercut.

10-9 Cruz

19-19

by ColtJouvet on Apr 16, 2011 10:52 PM EDT reply actions

Cruz-Honorio Rd 3

Al believes that Honorio is fighting recklessly. Cruz just waiting to land the counter left hook as Honorio lands some good body shots. Good right from Cruz.. Al is on Honorio for not using the jab. Cruz is particularly dangerous once they separate from the clinch. Honorio lands a few more body shots. Cruz is set on countering, with mixed results.

10-9 Honorio

29-28 Honorio

by ColtJouvet on Apr 16, 2011 10:56 PM EDT reply actions

Cruz-Honorio Rd 4

Flurry and Cruz answers with a good left hook. Cruz is looking to establish the jab in this round. Honorio firing wild shots. Cruz landing jabs. Honorio is landing on the body but has been much less successful at head shots. Cruz with a stiff right counter. Honorio lands a looping right near the end of the round.

10-9 Cruz

38-38

by ColtJouvet on Apr 16, 2011 11:00 PM EDT reply actions

Cruz-Honorio Rd 5

Al has this fight even. Honorio firing at the body. Cruz with some solid head movement although, Honorio makes it easy with his wide reaching shots. Good right by Cruz. Good left by Cruz, who is winning the flurries in this round. Honorio back to the body. Another good hook by Cruz. Tough round to score. Honorio’s corner believes they can wear Cruz down.

10-9 Honorio

48-47 Honorio

Cruz-Honorio Rd 6

Crowd coming alive as the fighters let their hands go! Big left hook by Cruz! Honorio with a good right! And another! Cruz backing up, he looks hurt! Cruz with a right! Cruz with a uppercut! Honorio firing to the body, establishing control as the round closes. Very nice action.

10-9 Honorio

58-56 Honorio

by ColtJouvet on Apr 16, 2011 11:08 PM EDT reply actions

Cruz-Honorio Rd 7

Clash of heads early on. Honorio with good combo to the body. One shot looked low. Cruz doing well with the jab, keeping Honorio at distance. Cruz ducks a wild Honorio shot that missed by a mile. Cruz is very cautious in this round, preferring to jab and duck the incoming shots. Cruz with a nice right to the body. Good right by Cruz to finish the round.

10-9 Cruz

67-66 Honorio

by ColtJouvet on Apr 16, 2011 11:12 PM EDT reply actions

Cruz-Honorio Rd 8

Honorio back to the body as the bell starts. Cruz with a good right counter. Cruz countering well. More body shots by Honorio. Good combo by Cruz. Al continues this strange mantra that Cruz is fighting a guy several levels ahead of him. Honorio is slowly taking over this round with body work. Cruz aggressive late, but its not enough.

10-9 Honorio

77-75 Honorio

by ColtJouvet on Apr 16, 2011 11:16 PM EDT reply actions

Cruz-Honorio Rd 9

Cruz jabbing early. Again Cruz is countering Honorio’s wild shots as the crowd comes alive. Honorio with a good left hook! Cruz has gotten away from the uppercut, which may be a mistake given Honorio’s tendency to duck low for body shots. Cruz with some jabs late. Cruz stunned a bit by a Honorio body shot. Flurry to end the round. Close round, but Honorio did more with the body work.

10-9 Honorio

87-84 Honorio

by ColtJouvet on Apr 16, 2011 11:20 PM EDT reply actions

Cruz-Honorio Rd 10

Both fighters with a sense of urgency. Cruz appears hurt by a hard body shot by Honorio! Cruz backs away and seems sturdy. Cruz settling into counter punching again. Honorio is working to win this round. Honorio has some swelling under the right eye. Cruz with a good shot to the body! Cruz with a left hook, but he’s unable to build from it. Cruz with a jab.

10-9 Cruz

96-94 Honorio

by ColtJouvet on Apr 16, 2011 11:23 PM EDT reply actions

It’s close enough that Cruz will probably win

Bob Arum would promote Lucifer himself if he could put asses in the seats.

by Apprentice on Apr 16, 2011 11:25 PM EDT reply actions

Al and Gus were loving Cruz's counter punching

I think he did well but he never really built on anything, and Honorio landed quite a bit to the body. This fight is a case where Honorio outworked Cruz, but given that Cruz landed some good counters throughout the fight, I can certainly see a Cruz decision

by ColtJouvet on Apr 16, 2011 11:26 PM EDT reply actions

I agree with your assessment… I would’ve given it to Honorio and I’m from PR. But I can definitely see a case for 96-94 Cruz based on crisp counter punching.

Bob Arum would promote Lucifer himself if he could put asses in the seats.

There were several very close rounds. Cruz definitely has some talent, I’d like to see some more combos in the future.

Lopez-Salido R1

What a huge fuckin’ ring that is. Jesus Christ. You could put a condo in there.

Salido with a right hand after JuanMa lands a little bit. Very much a feeling-out round for both in the first two minutes. Lopez with the left hand, but Salido throws a left hook. Last 10 seconds they mix it up just a bit. Largely uneventful.

And more goddamn noisemakers in the crowd. I had enough of that with Khan-McCloskey earlier though this is far less obnoxious.

Right hand by Salido. Lopez looks lazy offensively. Almost indifferent. Right again by Salido. Little left by Lopez. Not much on it. Boy Lopez has gotten slower and slower with ihs hands. Now they’re opening up inside. Lopez bends a bit on a body shot, but a nice right from Salido catches the eye. Lopez firing back and this is starting to heat up just a bit.

Salido really wants that big right hand. That one scraped Lopez. And a big one backs down Lopez! Salido coming at him and Lopez landing good shots! Another right by Salido. That one was straight. Another referee too in love with being involved tonight.

Right hand, left hook by Salido. These guys are battling now. Lopez looking for space to get some rhythm. Salido’s right, and then a left, really cracking around. If he had bigger power this could change in an instant. Lopez coming back at him.

Good right hook by Lopez. Salido just won’t stop coming at him. Lopez’s punches just don’t look that heavy tonight for some reason. Lopez-Salido R6

Well, it’s gut-check time. Lopez has come back from worse.

Salido with a hook and a big right. Lopez hurt! LOPEZ THROWING BECAUSE HE DOESN’T KNOW HOW TO HOLD! BIG RIGHT! LOPEZ ALL OVER THE RING! ARE WE SEEING ANOTHER ONE?

Salido measured. BIG RIGHT! LOPEZ STAGGERING ALL OVER AGAIN! LOPEZ HAS NO IDEA HOW TO CLINCH! SALIDO CHASING HIM ALL OVER THE RING!

Salido is KICKING HIS ASS now! Lopez COMING BACK offensively! This guy is a fighter. LOPEZ FIRIGN! Right hand Salido again! BIG LEFT HOOK ROCKS LOPEZ AGAIN! WHAT A FIGHT THIS ONE IS! WHAT A SPORT! TELL ME BOXING ISN’T ENTERTAINING.

Lopez is out of it. He’s barely standing. Lopez holding behind the head and hitting, but ref stays out of it. Lopez with a left. Lopez STILL COMING WITH ACTION! ANOTHER RIGHT BY SALIDO! Lopez turning into a ZOMBIE! Just wakling forward and fighting! Salido may have thrown too much. My God. Lopez might be back to it. Salido with more big shots.

Lopez did just enough this round to stave off another 10-8, IMO.

Salido 10-9
Salido 58-55

Gus Johnson threatens to ruin the fun with his HILARIOUS and EDGY “nuts and guts!” call.

Lopez-Salido R7

This has turned into a pure brawl and boys, I LOVE IT! Salido throwing, BUT HE’S HURT A LITTLE ON A DESPERATION SHOT FROM LOPEZ! Lopez has zero defense. No idea how to clinch. Or no desire to. Or both. Salido pops him with another chopping right hand. He’s been able to land that right hand from just about all angles. Another right, this one sweeping. Lopez with a big rally and Salido is backed down to end another great round!

If there was no standing 8 count, blame the rules, not the ref. The standing 8 count gives a ref a chance to check on a fighter without having to stop it. He was held up by the ropes a few times and the ref is trying to figure out when a guy is left with instincts and the ropes saving him vs. when he’s still actually in it.

I rewound to watch that whole last round. Lopez was getting jacked and was falling all over the whole damn round. then he’s getting crushed, collapses into the ropes, collapses into them again…I mean, that’s about the hardest situation you can put a ref in. He chose a really weird time to stop it as Salido backed off, then landed two punches and he jumped in. but…it really wasn’t that bad of a stoppage at all.
