Bad Left Hook Live Results and Coverage: Giovani Segura v. Ivan Calderon II

Tonight at 9pm EDT on Integrated Sports PPV ($39.95) in the US, Premier Sports in the UK, and Super Channel in Canada, Giovani Segura defends the world junior flyweight championship against the man he beat to win it, Ivan Calderon. The two met in a Fight of the Year contender last August, resulting in Calderon being handed the first loss of his Hall of Fame-bound professional career. Tonight, they do it again, and this time Segura has home field in Mexico.

Besides the main event, there's a decent undercard. Two featherweight bouts serve as the main co-features. In one, Jorge Lacierva takes on Fernando Beltran Jr., and in the other, Joksan Hernandez faces Ricardo Castillo. Also on the card will be Ramon Maas, as well as Alonso Lopez, the son of the great Ricardo "Finito" Lopez.

I won't be in tonight for the fights, as my wife has a rare Saturday off and I couldn't convince her to just stay in while I look at boxing, so I'm sacrificing. It's really a great burden. But never fear! Andrew Fruman will be in my place for live updates. Enjoy!

Bernstein and Ricardo both have Lopez up 1-0. He did look to have landed the cleaner shots, including a couple decent hooks, though Guerrero was the aggressor.

TheBoxingBulletin.com

by A.F. on Apr 2, 2011 9:18 PM EDT reply actions

Guerrero fought less than a week ago (against an opponent with 3-21-1 record). He’s steadily marching forward, though not all that effectively. He has landed the occasional right hand that gets through – he landed a decent counter right that knocked Lopez back a step or two late in the round. Al and Benny have it 2-0 for Lopez.

TheBoxingBulletin.com

by A.F. on Apr 2, 2011 9:22 PM EDT reply actions

Guerrero buzzed Lopez early in the round with a right, though Lopez managed to get his legs back quickly and came back well over the next couple minutes. Al dithers a little on who to give the round to, and Benny says he’s giving it to Guerrero.

TheBoxingBulletin.com

by A.F. on Apr 2, 2011 9:25 PM EDT reply actions

Guerrero came out hard for the fourth, and tore away at Lopez for the opening 30 seconds. He didn’t get much done however, other than tire himself out a little and Lopez had the edge over the remainder of the round. This will be the first time Lopez goes past 4 rounds – if he wins, and it looks like he will, it will also be his first win over an above .500 opponent.

TheBoxingBulletin.com

by A.F. on Apr 2, 2011 9:30 PM EDT reply actions

Technical difficulties right now… so we’ve got Ricardo and Bernstein in the studio for the first half of the round. They couldn’t see the action either. Now the picture has returned. Not much happening really. Guerrero pushing forward without much luck, Lopez landing the occasional shot in return. Al comments that while Lopez is winning, his accuracy is nothing to be thrilled with.

TheBoxingBulletin.com

by A.F. on Apr 2, 2011 9:34 PM EDT reply actions

Guerrero coming forward with a litle more urgency in this last round, though not doing anything to put Lopez in any discomfort. Final seconds tick down on what should be an easy points win for Lopez.

Round 1

Hopefully there won’t be any head clashes, which is always a concern with a southpaw-orthodox match-up. Cautious stuff early. And there’s the first clash of heads. No damage I assume… at least Russell didn’t stop the action to take a look, and neither fighter indicated an problem. Now Lacierva switches southpaw. Benny comments that he loses a bit of snap when he does that. There’s the bell. I thought Lacierva did just a little more in what was a cautious round. So did Benny. He’s got him 1-0.

Round 2

Lacierva starts the round as a lefty, and switches back to orthodox quickly after slapping with his first left. Al comments that Beltran’s been effective with the jab so far. He’s a little short though when firing his right. Still mostly cautious stuff so far. Lacierva got a little aggressive there at the end of the round, and landed an uppercut that followed a flurry. Benny and Al gave the round to Beltran. He didn’t land a whole lot, but he was the more ambitious for the most part. They’ve got it 1-1, which is fair as there hasn’t been much in it.

Round 3

Al comments that Beltran is showing a little more initiative at this stage. He just landed a decent 1-2. Benny compliments him on some sharp jabs as well. Lacierva comes back with some digs to the body. There’s another clash of heads. Or head to chin there, as Beltran caught Lacierva with his noggin again. No damage though, as Russell took a look. Lacierva tries to jump in with a flurry just before the bell. Mostly technical stuff through 3 rounds here. Benny’s got it 2-1 for Beltran.

Round 4

Lacierva’s corner give him a little talking to about his lack of activity. We’ll see if he gets busy. Lacierva seems to be responding early. He’s come forward with a few flurries here in the first minute of the round. Now he switches southpaw again. There’s a clinch and Beltran is warned for whacking Lacierva in the back. Beltran trying to edge forward behind the jab, but Lacierva circles away. Now Lacierva jumps in with a decent flurry. Pretty good round for Lacierva so far. Lacierva switches southpaw again, and digs in with a couple uppercuts. Lacierva with a decent right. There’s the bell. I gave that one to Lacierva.

Round 5

Al mentions that neither man ever been stopped… so this one is likely going the full 12. The crowd starting to whistle a little. The styles haven’t meshed for much action, and the crowd is a little restless here. Lacierva has been the more active of the two in this round, and Al comments that he’s starting to impose his will a little on the fight. There’s the bell.

Round 6

Lacierva with a nice uppercut. Benny comments that he’s trying to lure Beltran in for a big counter. Beltran is short with a 1-2, and Lacierva counters with a quick flurry that seemed to land. Lacierva digs to the body, and then lands a right. He’s the better of the two fighters at this stage. He’s back as a lefty though… which neither Benny or Al likes. Now he’s back to righty. He digs to the midsection with a nice right. Beltran trying to jab forward, not having all that much luck though. Lacierva bangs home an uppercut that lands. Another round for Lacierva. He’s clearly up at the half-way point.

TheBoxingBulletin.com

by A.F. on Apr 2, 2011 10:16 PM EDT reply actions

Round 7

Lacierva landing the heavier blows here. Beltran’s jab has been his best weapon, but he’s been unable to get through with much else. Benny comments that Lacierva’s starting to time Beltran’s attempts. Beltran just landed a little hook on the inside though, and Lacierva immediately clinched. Now Beltran manages to get through with a 1-2. Beltran with a decent uppercut. Lacierva goes storming back though, and lands a heavy straight right. Beltran popping the jab as he comes forward. Action a bit messy now with quite a few clinches. Crowd whistles their disapproval as the round ends.

TheBoxingBulletin.com

by A.F. on Apr 2, 2011 10:20 PM EDT reply actions

Round 8

Al thinks the fight’s in danger of slipping away from Beltran. I think he did okay in the 7th, might have even won it. He’s firing 1-2’s, though usually coming up short with the right. Lacierva is putting his punches together a little better. He’s jumping in quickly and throwing combos when he lets his hands go. Benny comments that he thinks Lacierva’s concluded that Beltran can’t hurt him and is taking a few more risks. Lacierva digs hard with a couple shots to the body. Good round so far for Lacierva. There’s the bell.

TheBoxingBulletin.com

by A.F. on Apr 2, 2011 10:24 PM EDT reply actions

Round 9

Lacierva just went down after stepping on Beltran’s foot. No knockdown. That happened the previous round as well. Beltran probably needs to start taking a few more chances here. He’s popping out the jab, but he’s not coming forward with any real conviction. Lacierva just very intentionally whacked Beltran in the back of the head during a clinch, and he’s told to refrain from that sort of activity by Russell. It’s been a chippy fight. A fair bit of clinching. There’s more clinching, and Beltran complains that he was tagged in the back of the head again. Lacierva jumps in with a flurry. This has been a messy round. Lacierva just caught Beltran with a little hook on the inside. There’s the bell.

TheBoxingBulletin.com

Round 10

Benny says that Beltran’s corner told him he’s losing. They’re right, and he needs to really get going if he’s to stand a chance on the cards. It’s getting messy. More clinches… some lasting too long. Lacierva just cracked Beltran with a nice right hand. Which is followed by more clinching. More clinching. They’re both whacking away with little stuff in the clinch. Lacierva with another decent counter. He really stood his ground and ripped back there. But we’ve got more messy stuff in the clinch following. There’s the bell. I kind of wish this would have been a 10 rounder… we don’t need 6 more minutes of this.

Round 11

I’d guess it’s about 7-3 for Lacierva right now. Beltran needs something dramatic, which appears very doubtful. Lacierva lands a lead left. He appears to have this fight in hand right now. We’ve got more clinching. Lacierva landed a decent right, and Beltran tried to tie him up. More wrestling. There’s the bell. Another round for Lacierva. This one is as good as done with 1 session to go.

Round 12

We start with a clash of heads. That’s fitting, I guess. Lacierva looked bothered by it, and went for a bit of a walk before the action resumed. Beltran landed a decent 1-2, but Lacierva came back with a couple of nice flurries. He’s mixing his attack up to the body and head when he lets go. He catches Beltran with a little shot on the way in, which is followed by a clinch. He lands a hard right hand. Lacierva in command with about 1:00 to go. We’ve got some clinching. More clinching. Some whisteling from the crowd. More clinching. Lacierva tries to come forward for one last flurry, and there’s the bell. Not a great spectacle, but a very clear win for Jorge Lacierva.

Now he slips away as Calderon is short with a left downstairs. Calderon jumps in with a jab, and then quickly gets out of there. Segura just short with a left, and Calderon ties him up. Segura again short with a left to the body. Calderon tries to jump in with his own left, and he slips to the canvas. No knockdown. Calderon circling away to his right here. He blocks a jab. Segura digs downstairs, and Calderon ties him up. Calderon sticks home a jab. Segura disgs to the body, and Calderon slips away to the right and forces a clinch. Ivan slips away again to the right. Segura whacks the body. Calderon pops home a right. Segura is coming hard, though not all that much success so far. He’s making Calderon really use his legs though. I’d guess the clinches might take their toll on Calderon as well, given the size difference. Segura digs to the body body with a hook. Another hard body shot from Segura as Calderon backs up. Segura is getting close to hitting low on those, but I think they’re clean. Calderon trying to pop back in return before moving. He lands a jab. Segura again digs downstairs. Now Segura is warned for going low. Calderon pops home a jab, and backs off. Segura digs hard to the body again. Al thought it might have been low. He knew that no matter what he did or does, the result is going to be the same.

Gonzalez

Calderon had nothing to keep Segura off him………..like to see the relentless Segura against Roman Gonzalez……….let’s see if Segura can walk through Gonzalez’s punches.
