Prizefighter: Heavyweights Field Set for May 7 as Juan Carlos Gomez Joins Cast

The field for the next Prizefighter tournament is set.

The Sun reports today that Juan Carlos Gomez has signed up for the May 7 edition of Prizefighter, once again featuring the heavyweights. That rounds out the eight-man, single elimination field. Here's the lineup:

  • Juan Carlos Gomez (49-2, 37 KO), 37 y/o, Cuba
  • Fres Oquendo (32-7, 21 KO), 38 y/o, Puerto Rico
  • Mike Perez (13-0, 10 KO), 25 y/o, Cuba
  • Kevin Johnson (24-1-1, 10 KO), 31 y/o, United States
  • Tye Fields (45-3, 41 KO), 36 y/o, United States
  • Gregory Tony (14-1, 12 KO), 32 y/o, France
  • Konstantin Airich (16-3-2, 13 KO), 32 y/o, Kazakhstan
  • Michael Sprott (36-15, 17 KO), 36 y/o, United Kingdom

This is kind of a landmark Prizefighter since it will be the first tournament with fighters from outside of the UK and Ireland. In fact the only fighter in the tournament from the UK or Ireland is Sprott, though Perez is based in Ireland.

If I were a betting man, my favorite right now would be Mike Perez. He's the youngest, freshest, probably the strongest guy in the field. I don't like the format for Oquendo, Gomez or Johnson, though Gomez has the most natural talent of anyone in the tournament. Tony could be the real darkhorse here. If Tye Fields wins, I'll never watch another Prizefighter because it will assure me that the entire idea is a sham and a farce.

This Prizefighter looks better every single time. Hopefully there won’t be any pull-outs (inevitably there will be) but damned if I’m not pretty excited for some heavyweight action, for once!

my guesses for withdrawal:

First, Kevin Johnson. Followed by Fields.

Yeah, I’m not sure how well the Prizefighter format suits Johnson; then again, I don’t think any format really suits you when you spend whole fights posturing rather than punching.

If that’s true, he won’t have to endure the format for long, judging by my single Prizefighter experience.

This is a great concept for boxing. It sparks interest and gives someone a real shot at

getting into the mix—-and all in one day!!!!!!!

Nick Charles is an inspiration.

It’s always a welcome change of pace. The show is just plain fun to watch.

Winner of the tournament probably ends up in the top 5 or so of one of the rankings

The one where Vitali is champ. But two people who recently challenged for his title in the tourny means that the winner, by default, will get ranked highly by them.

That's a hell of a field

But on the other hand, at least one or two of them will pull out by the time this actually happens.

I suspect Fields will stay in it. He’s a draw up around Calgary, and he’s promoting these days, so I’m sure he wouldn’t mind trying to expand his appeal.

Disappointed Martin Rogan pulled out but, relativley speaking, it’s still a pretty decent line up (as it stands.) Should make for a fun evenings entertainment if nothing else.

Yeah,i would have liked to have seen Rogie involved too.
This is/was his style of fighting, though he might be getting a bit too old now.

Apparently he’s not taking the opportunity citing lack of preparation time…. at 39 and given his late entree into the world of professional boxing, you’d think he’d have jumped at the chance. I don’t see anything on the horizon for Rogan that comes remotely close to what winning another prizefighter potentially could do for him.

The most talented fighters have the worst workrates, this contest is wide open.
