Bad Left Hook Live Results and Coverage: John Simpson v. Stephen Smith II

Today at 5pm EDT, Bad Left Hook will have live coverage of the rematch between British featherweight champ John Simpson and Commonwealth titlist Stephen Smith. The two met last September in a very close fight, as the younger, more accurate Smith (11-0, 6 KO) barely got past the experienced Simpson (22-7, 9 KO) by split decision. Bad Left Hook scored that one a draw.

Smith, 25, spoke Monday about the rematch against Simpson:

Simpson defeated Martin Lindsay in December to pick up the British belt, while Smith has been out with a hand injury since the first fight with Simpson.

Dave Oakes previewed the fight on Tuesday:

One change from the first fight is Smith’s move to Gallagher’s gym, which is probably the hottest gym in Britain at the minute, with Joe Gallagher’s fighters on a long unbeaten run under his tutelage. It’s a move that I feel will pay dividends for the Liverpudlian.

Simpson is in fine form, as his win over Lindsay showed, and he’ll be fired up for revenge. On top of that, he’s ranked highly by the IBF and a win here could provide him with world title shot in the near future. Whilst the ever confident Smith is promising to put on a sparkling performance that will leave people in no doubt as to who’s the best featherweight in Britain. It has all the makings of another enthralling battle.

I can’t see the fight being anything other than a close, hard fought encounter. As always with Simpson, the fight won’t be one-sided and he’ll take some discouraging, but as long as ring rust isn’t a problem for Smith, one feels his sharper work will be enough to eke out another close points decision.

The co-feature will see David Price (9-0, 7 KO) take on Raphael Butler (35-9, 28 KO) in heavyweight action. Join us this evening for some midweek boxing!

The odds are pretty close for this one, with Smith the slight favourite.
I’ll be interested to get another look at Price though i’m not sure how much resistance Butler will put up.
Hopefully more than Price’s last few opponents.

I saw Butler’s last fight, and he was fairly good for the first 4 rounds. He landed several solid counters and showed some skills – though he tired noticiably as the fight wore on. He weighed 277 for that one, so it sounds like he’s in slightly better shape this time out. He could give Price some trouble… though I’d guess he’ll fade eventually.

Yes, hopefully Price will be tested tonight. The Machimana fight was bad, and Price seemed frustrated about the calibre of opposition in the post fight interview.
I can see Big John giving him trouble, especially if he is fit and in shape.

When’s the last time Big John was fit or in shape? Are we grading on a curve here?

Top trainer around right now, as far as the UK is concerned. What he’s done for Anthony Crolla is nothing short of remarkable.

"Occasionally, there is a boxing match that, in its demonstration of skill, courage, intelligence, hope, seems to redeem the sport - almost. Perhaps boxing has always been a sport in crisis, a sport of crisis."

by Oli Goldstein on Apr 27, 2011 5:45 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Crolla is looking good. But do you think his future is at lightweight?

by Finn10 on Apr 27, 2011 5:48 PM EDT up reply actions

He’s a bit small…He only really took that lightweight title fight because the original opponent was injured.
I would love to see a rematch with Gary Sykes back down at 9st 4lbs.

by Matt Mosley on Apr 27, 2011 5:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah,it’s good to see a trainer who has come through the right way,by bringing fighters along from scratch and improving others to take them to the next level.
The guy deserves ten times more credit than say Adam Booth, imo, who has really just ridden David Haye’s coatails so far.
I mean,Booth can obviously do the job but then he also think he’s a promoter, amnager, etc.
He’s overrated by some of the British boxing media, imo.
Gallagher is a real trainer and his record speaks for itself.

by Matt Mosley on Apr 27, 2011 5:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed. Booth’s done very little for George Groves, in my opinion, whereas Gallagher’s fighters continue to look better and better each fight. Add to the fact that he’s a heck of a lot more likeable than Booth, who just appears to be a bit of a slimeball really.

Simpson-Smith R1

Smith throws quickly and dominates the first minute, and may have Simpson hurt! Simpson hurt and won’t tie up! THEY WING SHOTS IN A BRAWL! Simpson still on wobbly legs, still getting hit, and now trapped in the corner. Simpson is landing a bit in return, but not nearly as clean or hard. Smith bullying Simpson into the ropes, Simpson tying up better now than he was earlier. Smith firing a right and a left hook, but may now be getting too aggressive and could be wasting precious energy on a fighter who is now willing to tie him up and cut him off. Right hand by Smith lands again. Simpson pecking back with decent shots here and there, not a zero round for him.

Smith 10-9

Simpson-Smith R2

Smith still the aggressor, but Simpson’s legs are back and he appears back in the fight mentally after surviving the first round. Simpson with a right, then misses an uppercut. Right hand by Smith lands. Body shot by Simpson. Body shot by Smith is better, though. He’s coming in really hard at Simpson and then either getting out, or ducking down enough that Simpson can’t land a clean shot back. Another hard shot by Smith. Simpson tying him up, trying to wear him down by holding some. Referee warns for the holding, and frankly it’s probably deserved. Simpson is doing a lot of it. Smith with more good shots and Simpson holds again.

Simpson-Smith R3

Right from Smith, but now Simpson is starting to time him a bit more on his charges, and lands a left hand that backs Smith down. Smith still just too fast. Good right by Simpson lands hard, and another one. Smith might be getting ahead of himself. Smith backed down, but comes right back with offense. This has turned into quite a fast-paced fight, all due to Smith, who is fighting ultra aggressively still. Smith with a left to the body. Every round is closer than the last, though. Smith with another nice body shot, this one a right hand. Simpson now making it much more of a fight and the round is winnable with 30 seconds left. Simpson starting to take control of the pace. Simpson with a left hook, Smith nails him back. I edge Simpson slightly for better clean punches.

Simpson-Smith R4

Smith with another wild bull rush. More warnings from the referee, but tactically I can’t blame Simpson for grabbing up. It seems to bother Smith. Another warning from the referee. OK take the point or get out of the way. That’s three warnings. Simpson warned for a shot to the back of the head, and Smith walks it off. Simpson stalking a bit as they get back to action. This is turning into another close fight between these two. Another close round, this time I favor Smith closely, but this definitely isn’t the fight it appeared in the first round.

Simpson-Smith R5

Richie Woodhall went 10-10 last round and 10-8 Smith in the first, so we have the same score. Smith comes out fast again this round. Simpson still doing a bit more to control the pace. Smith is so hyper-aggressive that this is bound to bite him unless he’s in miraculous physical condition. The 3000th warning of Simpson! That was a STERN warning, it appeared, so next warning probably gets a point docked. Simpson, as commentators say, is landing the better punches and has clawed his way back into this fight.

Simpson-Smith R6

The referee STARTS this round with a talking-to. Question now is if Smith has in fact expended too much energy. Simpson’s trainer wants him to turn up the heat.

Right hand Simpson. Left to the body. Smith with a little flurry, but the punches seem to have lost some steam. Smith with a good shot, now they trade and each land stiff punches. Simpson with a right. chopping right by Simpson, now he’s pushing Smith back some. Simpson looking much fresher now. Smith is definitely slowing down in a big way. The kid may have gone too hard too early. Simpson landing good shots when they exchange, Smith not landing much clean.

Simpson 10-9

Simpson with a left hook and some rights. Simpson has taken the momentum and Smith just doesn’t have the spirit he had earlier. Simpson still winning the exchanges. Smith with a quick flurry, doesn’t land anything. Simpson walking him down. Smith’s legs bow just a bit on a right hand. Smith with a nice combination, standing his ground a bit. Simpson with a nice comeback. Very close round.

Simpson 10-9

Simpson is such a tenacious, rugged guy. He’s so difficult to dent and back up, and he’s surprisingly skilful too. Times that lead right hand on the way in so well – did the same thing against Martin Lindsay too.

Simpson-Smith R8

Smith throwing, but now NAILED WITH A BIG RIGHT HAND! LEFT HAND! SMITH IN SOME TROUBLE! And he turns around out of it. Smith still isn’t totally back, but he’s being smart about this, or trying to. Left hook from Simpson to the body has some real smoke on it. Simpson looks far, far stronger at this point. Stalking Smith and going after him. Smith just surviving right now, making Simpson chase, and Simpson is obliging. Smith wobbled a bit again. He’s really pouring it on. There’s still a minute left in the round, too, and that right hand is landing nicely. Smith with a big right — a real desperation shot with his back on the ropes. Simpson takes it well. Smith coming harder in the closing moments of the round. This is a hell of a fight.

Simpson loves this pace. Smith does not. But there’s a nice shot by Smith. He’s fighting with real desire to say the least. Both are. Right and left blocked by Simpson. Now they brawl again! Simpson lands as Smith ducks under the top rope, but not significantly and the referee just breaks it up and starts it back up. Very tough round to score. Close fight.

Smith now looks quicker, fresher. A real turn from the middle rounds. So we’ve seen Smith start very fast, Simpson take over, and Smith come back. And another shot to the back of the head as Smith ducks under the top rope again — referee doesn’t take a point. I admire that. It’s so late and it wasn’t something that affected Smith badly, so let them fight as much as you can let them fight. Hard right by Smith, and Simpson turns and grabs the ropes. Simpson hasn’t been hurt since the first, but I think Smith has taken over big. If he can close out the 12th, this is his fight in my view.

Simpson trying to rough it up and he’s throwing big shots, but not landing. Smith lands one to the back of the head now, referee lets it go after breaking them up. First minute is pretty even. Smith with a right, but Simpson lands a good one back. Simpson with a nice shot and Smith ties up. Simpson landing in counters here, as this fight looks like it did in the second or third round now. Both throwing what they have, but neither has a lot of energy left. Fight comes to a close and what a fight it was.

It must be hard to lose the decision in such a close fight and idiotic scorecards certainly don’t help.

The only person it’s not insulting to is the promoter behind Pacquiao. If you’re him, it is perfect matchmaking.

Sky were talking about Morales as though he was still in his prime the other week, that’s just as insulting. They must think people are clueless.

To be fair,Spencer Oliver was at least trying to tell it like it is regarding Pac v Mosley but then that Dave whats-his-name cut in with the company line.
I don’t mind them hyping it up a bit as they have to sell it but calling it “perfect matchmaking” is just laugh out loud ridiculous.

Sky also hyped up John Murray’s fight against the ‘Spanish Champion’ El Ouazghari. But Murray did make hard work of it i suppose!

They’ll say anything to justify the £80 or so per month, I pay them.
