Bad Left Hook Live Results and Coverage: Luis Alberto Lazarte v. Ulises Solis II

UPDATE: As the TyC feed is all soccercentric with dogs pooping on the pitch and all this, we have bonus coverage of Gilberto Keb Baas v. Adrian Hernandez from Mexico.

Tonight at 10pm EDT, TyC Sports (Argentina) and Televisa (Mexico) will both carry the rematch in Argentina between junior flyweight trinket-holder Luis Alberto Lazarte and Ulises "Archi" Solis.

Their first fight in December was highly questioanble, with Lazarte escaping thanks to a majority draw. Two cards were even (113-113) while a third card had Solis comfortably winning, 117-109. Were it not for two points deducted from Lazarte during the fight, he would have won a split decision, which didn't sit right with many unbiased observers, most of whom seemed to feel that Solis had won the fight. This time around Solis and his team have been very careful about approving the selection of officials.

Lazarte (48-9-2, 18 KO) is nicknamed "El Mosquito" and is without question not a fun fight for anyone. He "upset" Carlos Tamara in May of last year to claim the belt he now holds, and defended it in September against Nerys Espinoza before fighting Solis (32-2-3, 21 KO), who has long been one of the top fighters at 108 pounds.

Bad Left Hook will be here with live coverage starting at 10pm EDT.

for tonight's drinking

As I like to get pretty plastered when I watch fights sometimes, and this one isn’t such a huge deal I feel the need to be competent, I am switching from my normal bourbon and bourbon only routine to try Jeremiah Weed Southern Style Sweet Tea Vodka. So far, so good.

Seriously. O need a name for this, but as far as I know I invented it. Two parts vodka (preferably ketel), one part Jeremiah weed, one part limoncello. I think its name should be a John Daly – an alcoholic Arnold Palmer.

GKB-Hernandez R1

Both corners put big blotches of grease on the top of the turnbuckles so the referee makes both wipe some off, leading to a bit of a delay. Exciting!

First half of the round is total feeling-out stuff, neither guy landing anything. Poking jabs. Poking right hands. GKB gets the first real jab in as they throw some leather with 40 seconds left. Uh…that was a round alright.

GKB-Hernandez R2

Keb’s jab sneaks in and lands, then a lead right. Hernandez looking for angles, now gets shoved a bit throwing an uppercut and leaning to his left. GKB with body shots. Warned to keep them up. Hernandez with an uppercut that grazes. Keb with a right. Hernandez can fight but so far Keb is a bit better than him. You’d never guess this guy is 35-20-4 anymore. right hand by Hernandez while Keb throws. Much better round for both and for me. GKB to the body, tearing in with a right and then a left. Wide shots. Hernandez does look very calm still. There’s a chopping right and a left hook from Hernandez! Keb felt those, but he comes back strong. Fight’s picking up.

Hernandez trying to stalk, GKB wants to counter. Left hook and a left uppercut thrown by Keb. Both throw, Hernandez gets the better of it and backs GKB down a bit. Lead right by Keb lands, then a left hook. Body shots by Keb. Left hook again lands as they both come up from a crouch. Now Hernandez letting his hands go, but Keb slips a lot of it and starts landing when Hernandez slows down. More body shots by Keb, again warned to keep them up.

Dude outside totally just revved his engine. Bros it was so tight I got a boner.

Anyway to my eye Keb is just better than Hernandez tonight. He’s more active, he’s countering, he’s leading, he’s doing it all. Slipping Hernandez’s advances. Now Hernandez lands a hard shot, and Keb just comes back fighting. They’re settling in to quite a little battle here. Hernandez making Keb work hard to win these rounds, but I think he is winning them.

GKB-Hernandez R5

This fight has a nice pace. No holding, referee is largely invisible, both guys are working, GKB is throwing a lot of punches and keeping his hands very busy all the time. And he’s having to work so hard I also worry that he’ll be able to keep this up. Hernandez has stopped him before. But Keb is just going, going, going and his activity level alone is enough to win these rounds without Hernandez landing much clean. Hernandez with a flurry there, about 1:15 left in the round, and nothing really gets to GKB. Right hand down the pipe by Hernandez. That found Keb. Keb again goes right back to work, peppering Hernandez with jabs and little hooks, to the head and body.

GKB 10-9
GKB 50-45

GKB is just totally in control of this fight. Hernandez only has moments.

Well the TyC soccer show just ended, so we’ll see how long we stay here. NOW I hope there’s a co-feature fight on that one. If it’s actually coming up anyway.

Another active round for Keb. Busy, busy, busy. Hernandez can’t figure out a consistent plan of attack. There’s a chopping right from Keb. GKB kind of reminds me of Rafael Marquez without the power here — he’s a little too square for his own good, holds his elbows at the same angle. If you squint it looks like Rafa a little. Not as good, obviously. Hernandez trying to find a way into this fight. Keb with a right. That round went to Hernandez as he clawed into the fight by being more aggressive, but Keb is still with him.

GKB starting to show a few more cracks defensively. Earlier he was slipping well, that’s not happening so much anymore. And when they both land significant shots, Hernandez’s are definitely more telling. But that activity of Keb’s is good stuff. Keb with a nice flurry with about a minute left in the round. Left hook Keb, now he’s slipping shots again, and now another flurry. Now back to the body. Hernandez with one left to the body, then misses upstairs. Now Hernandez backing him down and chasing, and they both land nice shots! Hernandez closes the round strong and steals it! They battle after the bell!

And they’re going to pick up where they left off, both throwing punches. PUNCHES IN BUNCHES! Keb’s activity takes over, then Hernandez comes back with two hard rights! And another! AND ANOTHER! AND TWO MORE! NOW KEB CHOPPING BACK! Yeah! YEAH! Man fuck a Lazarte-Solis even if it does start right now. This rules.

Hernandez just pouring on pressure — AND OF COURSE THE OTHER FIGHT IS STARTING NOW OF COURSE IT IS — and Keb heads back to the corner for his mouthpiece. Keb still just won’t back down. Keb looks very tired. Once again to the corner with the mouthpiece. Hernandez’s power is starting to be a serious difference maker. Keb is there with him, but Hernandez is now the one in control. STIFF LEFT shakes GKB! Hernandez pouring it on! HERE HE GOES! Keb in dire straits, but won’t tie up! Hernandez pounding away on the ropes! Throwing and missing, but throwing! Referee taking a close look, now Keb backs him down but only for a moment. Hernandez is ALL OVER HIM this round. What a round for Adrian Hernandez!

GKB is dog tired in there. Hernandez is now entirely in control of the fight, and he knows it. Hernandez pressing again, pushing GKB to the ropes and looking to unload. But he’s not being reckless about it. Hernandez landing hard shots again! Keb trying to go to the body, but he now has zero zip on his punches and Hernandez couldn’t care less anymore. He’s chopping him down. Hernandez with another hard right inside. He’s just got too much firepower at this point. GKB is still trying like hell but he’s no longer even with Hernandez.

Referee calls time to warn GKB again. Or maybe he took a point. I couldn’t tell. Hernandez just DRILLING him with power shots now. GKB is toast. The guy is tougher than a two dollar steak and bless him he’s fighting back when he can, but when Hernandez gets going he really hammers away and hurts Keb. Left hook lands hard, uppercut lands. Hernandez is all over him now. Keb has nothing left but weak body shots trying to slow Hernandez down. Right hand Hernandez. Keb just keeps throwing. He’s looking for anything. But he can’t dent Hernandez anymore.

Lazarte-Solis R2

Lazarte is sort of like a miniature Marco Huck. Reckless, careless, doesn’t mind fouling a motherfucker. Doesn’t have Huck’s power. Doesn’t like getting hit. Probably better defensively, or at least smarter. Lazarte’s greatest offensive strength is his ridiculous charges from four feet back, because Solis doesn’t appear particularly prepared for them and they always make him look clumsy. Lazarte is hitting the ropes like he’s goddamn Rey Mysterio. He just thrusts himself into them. Right hand and a left from Solis. Close round.

Lazarte-Solis R3

Solis with some effective offense, but Lazarte gets away and starts flinging himself into the ropes some more. God I hate Lazarte’s style. It’s better than some guys (Sergio Mora), but he’s such a chore to watch. You’re lucky if he ever gets hit clean or if he ever hits anyone clean. Solis with a right to the body, strays low a bit, Lazarte reacts, and Solis overdoes a bow for apology. Now Solis goes low again and is pissed off at himself. I don’t count out the idea he’s doing it on purpose. Now Lazarte fouls SOLIS, and the referee does nothing until Solis reacts. Here we go with all this now.

Solis trying to time those charges now. I think he’s given up trying to press action. Lazarte doesn’t allow you to press action much.

totally outboxed and way not enough speed for Calderon

Well he used to be better than he is now, but I agree.

Lazarte-Solis R6

Basically more of the same. This is not a fight that plays well into text description. They have to be separated after the round because Lazarte is a dick.

Solis 10-9

In Lazarte defense he’s up there in age. And I seriously he was damn shocked himself when he became champion

by Eugene Banks on Apr 30, 2011 11:52 PM EDT reply actions

Tamara’s camp even admitted they chose him for the defense because they thought he was the easiest fight the body would approve.

Anyone who doesn’t have lineage is merely a “titlist” in my book.

me too

I should also say I refuse to call Manny Pacquiao “welterweight champion.” It’s not just Lazarte. “Champion” should remain a special distinction IMO.

Lazarte is pressing the action a little more now

Lazarte-Solis R7

This is now getting really dirty. Solis might as well just meet him halfway and punch him in the nuts or whatever. Lazarte is dying to make this a foulfest, so go ahead. Maybe he’s not keen on it if it comes back. But to Lazarte’s credit he’s starting to actually fight now and lo and behold he’s not totally awful at it. Rabbit punch. That’s his money punch. Seeing Lazarte stand at center ring might be confusing the hell out of Solis.

I hear them chanting………probably pretty drunk

Kind of hard to picture people saying “lets go see Lazarte fight”

Solis should throw the uppercut that turns into an elbow to the sternum while the referee is on the blindside.

Lazarte-Solis R8

God if Solis wins this and they decide to have a third fight, I pray to God there’s anything better for me to watch.

Lazarte back to his rope bouncing now. And Solis warned for whatever, going low I think. Solis tries a 1-2 but telegraphs it and Lazarte winds up across the ring, fleeing. I mean look I’ve seen much worse fights, obviously, but this fight stinks. Maybe the month has spoiled me. This is definitely better than that sweet Ken Frank fight last night on FNF. Right hand by Lazarte lands. Then he seems overly pleased. Or doesn’t know hwo to follow a landed punch. One of the two.

Solis 10-9
Solis 78-74

BTW, I hate when fighters stand in the corner. It’s so corny.

Never seen 2 fighters complain so much about fouls yet still touch gloves afterwards every time

No round has been dominated by either fighter…..Solis SHOULD be ahead, but in Argentina against an Argentinian champ………good luck.
