Bad Left Hook Live Results and Coverage: Hozumi Hasegawa v. Jhonny Gonzalez
We are live this morning with coverage of a big triple-header from Japan, and we welcome you to join us for live updates and results, followed by immediate post-fight analysis.
In the main event, Hozumi Hasegawa faces Mexico's Jhonny Gonzalez in a battle of top 10 featherweights. Also on the card, super featherweights Takahiro Ao and Humberto Gutierrez do battle. In the super bantamweight division, it will be Toshiaki Nishioka taking on Argentina's Mauricio Javier Munoz.
This is the first really major boxing card in Japan since the tragic natural disasters of March, and is the most and most important fight card of the weekend, and one of the best of the month.
Don't forget to check out our preview for slightly more in-depth views, but the gist is that Hasegawa-Gonzalez is really one of the most interesting matchups currently on the schedule, with the former bantamweight standouts now two divisions north of what was probably their peak weight, but still quality fighters.

Sadly I couldn’t find anything better so I’m watching Keyhole TV, which is so choppy that it’s all but useless. But I continue to look around. Nishioka-Munoz has already started.

Still at work...
And didn’t want to watch on Keyhole, so I snuck out and am watching at an internet cafe.

Two hour block
The broadcast is being given a two hour block, so I’m guessing if the fights went rounds, we’ll see Nishioka then Hasegawa. If Nishioka wins early, they’ll show highlights of Ao.
This is my first stream on my new laptop. Hopefully I’ll wither this machine’s will to live like I do most every computer I’ve ever had.

Nishioka looks a little sluggish through five.

It’s hidden now but I’ll be happy to post the link again (and then hide it)

I just got to it. Im glad that Keyhole wasnt the best choice.

ok cool
Keyhole is never the best choice, frankly. Even if the choice is just not watching. I’ve really got no idea how so many American anime fans use that to watch TV.
Bad Left Hook
"To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day..."
Yeah
it is choppy as all hell. For a fight it is useless like you said.

Agreed. The only time I use it is for the Kansai fights that aren’t shown up here. Quality is horrible.

This has been odd to watch. Nishioka is winning the fight because he’s better, but he seems to be sleepwalking to a degree and Munoz lands here and there to the point that I’m almost waiting for him to deck Nishioka with some bomb.
Bad Left Hook
"To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day..."
Nishioka’s been successful with the left uppercut to the body, but he seems to get tagged by the random left hook. Appears that he isn’t ready for the extension that Munoz gets when he throws it.
by RingwalkNIPPON on Apr 8, 2011 6:32 AM EDT up reply actions
he got caught with a good shot in that 7th round
7th was real good
You have to give it to Munoz
A lot tougher than many expected. Even if he’s a bit rough, he’s hanging in there. Tagging Nishioka more than Munore did in the last fight.
by RingwalkNIPPON on Apr 8, 2011 6:34 AM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, Munoz is a better challenge and a better fight than I expected. I wasn’t totally writing him off since he was basically an unknown, but his record was nothing to dream on, and he’s hanging around.

All for Nishioka
is this a 10 or 12 rounder?

Yeah he’s looking fresher at this stage.

"To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day..."
Nice finish
Looked like he really wanted to get rid of him then and there

Munoz is out of it and that right eye looks awful. IT’S OVER!
Toshiaki Nishioka KO-9
Bad Left Hook
"To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day..."
I was going to say after the eighth that when they showed them in the corners, Nishioka looked like he had much, much more left in his tank. It was in the water — Munoz drooled his, exhausted, while Nishioka had a powerful spit.

He seemed to finally get his timing down that round. He looked a little gunshy to really stand and fire back with any authority before.
TheBoxingBulletin.com
Yep
Seemed like in round 7 he started firing more and progressively got the timing down
I’m not completely sold on Ao, but he looks much, much bigger at the higher weight. Putting on good muscle. You might see some power in this fight.

not a bad fight to start with.

Bad Left Hook
"To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day..."
First could have went either way. I have Ao for the second.
by RingwalkNIPPON on Apr 8, 2011 6:56 AM EDT up reply actions
I have Ao up 2
He’s been landing some good shots to the body and doesnt seem to be too troubled with the height of Gutierrez
Ao both rounds by a little.

I’ve got 1-1 (Gutierrez 1st, Ao 2nd)
Bad Left Hook
"To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day..."
That sounds fair. I’m not liking the way Ao moves straight back and seems to have a bunch of holes defensively.
by RingwalkNIPPON on Apr 8, 2011 6:58 AM EDT up reply actions
His defense looks very mediocre. Very little movement on the way in, and as you mentioned, pulls straight back on the way out.
TheBoxingBulletin.com
I like how he’s planting his feet and punching with intent, but if he’s matched with someone with better accuracy and/or savvy, he’s going to be in a bad position often.

But there are some clever or artistic ones out there, too. The ones in Japan are usually lame, corny, and laden with “talent”, ie pretty, popular girls. All those coffee commercials you are seeing feature AKB48.

I’m far more likely to buy a product if there’s a pretty girl selling it. For instance, I keep watching every Katherine Heigl movie. I don’t even LIKE her. And her movies are crap.

where do you guys see Hasegawa fitting into the featherweight picture?

I’ve got him No. 9 for now because Burgos was a really good win, but we’ll see here. Gonzalez can really, really fight. It’s just up to his chin. The poor guy would legit be a top P4P guy if it weren’t for his one weakness.
Bad Left Hook
"To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day..."
I agree like you said in the preview
if his chin would hold up he would be talked about a lot more.

I think I’ve said it before, but I really admire how Hasegawa has bounced back from the Montiel loss by jumping two divisions and immediately taking back-to-back dangerous fights.
Bad Left Hook
"To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day..."
I agree, I just don’t really like the WBC politics that got him lined up for the title…

Hasegawa with some good body shots before I realized I’ve been posting about body shots the entire morning

10-9 Hasegawa – he looks sharp, but Gonzalez started opening up more in the latter stages of the round.
Bad Left Hook
"To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day..."
Gonzalez has a 9cm (3+ inches) reach advantage on Hasegawa. I like the way the champ is moving, but if he sits and trades, like he did in that last minute, he can be open for a few of those long lefts.
for as wide as those Gonzalez lefts were
I was impressed by their speed. Looked like it stunned Hasegawa a bit too
I like the way Hasegawa is making Gonzalez come inside. Jhonny obviously wants the fight at arm’s reach.
Bad Left Hook
"To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day..."
that left is not there at all for Jhonny.

20-18 Hasegawa, but Gonzalez has done his share in both rounds. Second wasn’t the hot pace of the first.

29-28 Hozumi for me

Fair stoppage. He didn’t have his legs.
All three judges had it for Hasegawa through three: 29-28, 30-27, 29-28
Thought he was taking over in

Padding out the broadcast for two hours, maybe.
Didn’t see it, sorry. The one on now with the ref getting KTFO is a Kamegai fight.
