Boxing Breakfast: Morales-Maidana Rematch Unlikely, Vic Wants Arce Again

LAS VEGAS, NV - MAY 07: Jorge Arce of Mexico celebrates his 12th round TKO victory against Wilfredo Vazquez in the WBO super bantamweight title fight at MGM Grand Garden Arena on May 7, 2011 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by Chris Trotman/Getty Images)

It's Andre Ward Day! All day long, curious would-be boxing fans can get to know Andre Ward, who fights on Saturday night on Showtime (along with the Pacquiao vs Mosley replay), against Arthur Abraham. He's worth getting to know.

Erik Morales vs Marcos Maidana II Not Likely

According a report by Miguel Rivera, Erik Morales has been advised by Golden Boy Promotions that Marcos Maidana wants a lot of money for a potential July 30 HBO pay-per-view rematch, which makes the fight unlikely. Morales is tentatively set to headline that night, and Maidana was just one of the opponents mentioned. Morales is also potentially in line for a July 23 date with Amir Khan, or he could face Robert Guerrero or Zab Judah. There's a big affair going on with all those mentioned fighters, but Maidana might be slipping out of the running, unless he's looking to instead rematch Khan. Maidana beat Morales narrowly in April, and in December lost a thriller to Khan. That fight won the BWAA Fight of the Year award, and was a strong contender for the Bad Left Hook Fight of the Year, too.

Darchinyan Would Fight Arce at 122 Pounds

Vic Darchinyan is fresh off a blowout of Yonnhy Perez in the Showtime bantamweight tournament, effectively winning third place (which sounds bad when there were only four fighters, but those are four really good fighters). Now he says he'd like to move up to super bantamweight if he could get a rematch with the resurgent Jorge Arce, who stole the show with his upset win over Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. on the Pacquiao vs Mosley show. Darchinyan dominated and eventually stopped Arce in February 2009 at super flyweight. The two fighters had developed quite a press rivalry over the years, and there are probably still some hard feelings at play there.

Bad Left Hook Radio - New Tomorrow!

Tomorrow will see the release of the second Bad Left Hook Radio podcast. This time we'll obviously talk a lot about the Pacquiao vs Mosley fallout, and I'll be previewing the Ward vs Abraham fight. Other topics of interest may include: Chris Arreola, Kelly Pavlik, Friday Night Fights/Shobox quick takes for Friday, Jeff Lacy vs Nick Diaz, and I'll have Bloody Elbow's Brent Brookhouse on the show to talk about the Manny fight and some boxing/MMA discussion.

And hey, if you want to send me an email with a question or something to discuss on the show, please do so. So far the load is light, but at least I got something good. So add to it. Let's rock talk.

Fight Chatter

  • Cornelius Bundrage (30-4, 18 KO) has finally signed to face Sechew Powell (26-2, 15 KO) on June 25, part of a stacked card in St. Louis that will see three fights televised by HBO, with this not being one of them. Don King still loads up a card when he gets the chance to do so. That night will also see Devon Alexander vs Lucas Matthysse (HBO); Tavoris Cloud vs Yusaf Mack (HBO); Bermane Stiverne vs Ray Austin (HBO); and Guillermo Jones vs Ryan Coyne. Bundrage demolished and possibly retired St. Louis native Cory Spinks last August in the same city.

After the jump: Your Song of the Day!

Star-divide

Song of the Day

In honor of Andre Ward Day, this one comes out of the Bay Area. You know those bands you grow up with, and they change, and they get worse, but every once in a while, they have a song that takes you back to being a dumbass kid causing some kind of ruckus with your friends on a summer night? That's what this song does for me.

Bundrage

Did I read that right? Bundrage will defend his “world” title on a HBO triple-header, but it won’t be televised?

I’m guessing HBO is telling the IBF that a Ray Austin fight is more noteworthy than a “title” fight for their pathetic belt.

Jones is defending his world title off tv as well

That dude is still champion? Didn’t he win his title back in 08………….what’s he been doing? Shining his belt?

He’s fought juuuust enough. And now he’s all mad because the “sanctioning” body expects he could fight twice this year. And he’s all, “It’s hurting my career.”

Or Kramer.

Hopefully, Boss Man does not attempt to kiss his wonderful wife after scarfing salted lox.

He should stay away from his cardiologist for a while too—
Who, just for the record, I don’t imagine he’ll try to kiss, but from who he will receive a Mr. Bill type warning.

Wasn't K-9/Powell I the fight with the double knockdown?

hahaha that was amazing… why was it ruled a no knockdown? is it because they, basically, cancel each other out?

Referee Flaherty ruled that Bundrage went down and Powell slipped. There was a true double KD on FNF last year— the ref failed to call it, but Joe & Ted did. ESPN used it for video hype for weeks. Wish I could remember who it was.

But I mean, it seems like both of them threw punches at the same time. And it wasn’t ruled a kd for any of them, he didn’t count and he let them continue and THEN Bundrage went down after that again.

What happens, normally, when they do rule it a double kd?

They did both throw at the same time, but one punch either didn’t quite connect or was a glancing blow.
I don’t know what they do when it is recognized as a double KD—I guess they’d both get 8, an even round. But I don’t know.

Well, Maidana’s people are now aware that Morales is a very live opponent in a rematch, so they aren’t going to risk a career-damaging loss unless he gets a fairly hefty payday, and given the miserable numbers for the first PPV, they probably realize that fight isn’t going to be terribly lucrative.

Golden Boy needs to make Ortiz-Maidana at 147 happen; it’s a surefire HBO payday for both guys, everyone wants to see it, and it’s probably a damn good fight for as long as it lasts.

Also, for my fellow Maidana geeks, here’s a recent interview:

http://www.15rounds.com/q-a-with-marcos-el-chino-maidana-051011/

You’ve gotta love this quote:

I always thank my fans for the great support they show me every time I fight. They know I am not the most skilful boxer but I always leave it all in the ring for them.

Also, interesting that he concedes that he’s probably headed for 147 reasonably soon.
