Bad Left Hook Radio for May 11, 2011: Ward vs Abraham Preview, Pacquiao vs Mosley Fallout, Inteview with Brent Brookhouse

Blhradio_medium

Bad Left Hook Radio is back this week for our second episode. This week there wasn't as much big show material to talk about, but we preview Saturday night's fight between Andre Ward and Arthur Abraham in the Super Six World Boxing Classic, plus I interview BloodyElbow.com's Brent Brookhouse about some boxing/MMA relationships. Brent covered the Pacquiao vs Mosley fight for SBNation.com and did an excellent job over there. We discuss the pay scales of major boxing and UFC, compare UFC 129 and Pacquiao vs Mosley as pure spectacles, the curious MMA community's reaction to last Saturday's fight, and more.

Also: I sadly jump the gun on Gus Johnson in an expanded listener email Q&A section. Thanks to those who sent in questions and suggestions. A little talk on Chris Arreola, Kelly Pavlik, Mayweather vs Ortiz, Juan Manuel Marquez vs David Diaz, and some other stuff. This went long -- it's about 80 minutes total, and that won't be the standard. But since I have no real reason to, I'm not going to (A) cut interviews short, or (B) when I have them, cut out other stuff I want to talk about. (Well not always. I decided to ignore Jeff Lacy vs Nick Diaz to keep it under 100 minutes, at least.)

The only reason I know that is, well, you kinda put up the youtube clip way back when, maybe a year ago or something. Changed my life, it did. Still haven’t seen the flick, though once I update my Netflix from just instant streaming to DVD service I may have to take the plunge

I can't find this when I search the iTunes store to subscribe.

Am I searching the wrong name? I just put in “Bad Left Hook.”

It might not be there yet. I’ll look into it later today.

Kittitas, I couldn't find it either,

Works great on the iphone though (in case any one is wondering).
Nice one Scott!

It’s almost surely something I screwed up trying to submit it to the iTunes Store. I’ll get it fixed.

Scott..

on reading my post to you and Kittitas, it sounds sarcastic, it was deffo not meant to come out that way. I think the podcast is a spot on feature. :)

Oh I didn’t think it was sarcastic at all. And thanks.

Scott and I have been friends for YEARS now. And as he pointed out yesterday, this interview is the longest phone conversation we’ve ever had. And it’s not particularly close.

It’s at least six times longer than any phone conversation we’ve had in 15 years.

iTunes update

No idea when it will show up (the computer I use more does not run iTunes because Windows iTunes is a travesty compared to the Mac version), but it SHOULD show up soon.

I love the podcast, man. It’s just so awesome to be able to walk around hearing about boxing. It’s really awesome.

And thanks for answering my question. I agree with you that it might actually be a good thing for these young fighters. Hopefully, they get a bit of humble pie and regroup to see what it is that they’re doing wrong. I think that’s a lesson Cotto learned the hard way but at least he did change trainers, unlike Trinidad who always stuck with Papa Trinidad – the denial king. Thanks!

Bob Arum would promote Lucifer himself if he could put asses in the seats.

Should be up in iTunes now, or will be very shortly.

Liked it a lot. Killed a commute to work, and part of the return, so that was certainly nice. Keep it up!

Late to fill up venues

I’m not saying its for better or worse, but the reason big Boxing cards never fill up until the main event is because those expensive tickets are going to big money gamblers and celebrities. The average Boxing fan isn’t paying the ridiculous price for those tickets and that is just the way it is. That’s why, as you said, there is only people in the cheap seats for the prelims.

I don’t think it would really make a huge difference if they stacked these undercards. It’s like when you go to a big concert or something like that. The majority of people are there to see the stars, they don’t care who the warm up act is.

It might be beginning to change in Europe with some of Warren’s shows, but it is a slow process. Even with some of those massive cards last year, the crowd was still empty for fights that would have filled a small hall as a main event in their own right.

I know about the tickets to high rollers thing, and I accept that the floor is going to be empty. But we’re seriously talking about like 15 people in the audience not counting press to watch Cote and Benavidez. UFC has conditioned their audience to care about the undercard, boxing has not. In fact if you ask them why their undercards for major events aren’t better, they’ll tell you that they’ve done research and nobody cares. I find that questionable research at best, because they spent years telling people not to care about the undercard before they did any of that research, if they ever did it (which I doubt). Of course people don’t care about the undercard, you’ve made them routinely shit and never bothered to promote them.

I agree with what you said for the most part. I guess part of it is making people aware why they should show up early. For example, you and I know how good Benavidez or Gomez are, but to most people they are just kids with Boxing gloves. It’s on the promoters to inform people why these guys are worth watching. I don’t know how they do that, whether it’s giving them more shine in the build up/press tour/promo etc.

On the cards here, the arena is usually quite empty for all the prelims – more full than arenas in the US- but more empty than full. However, the two times Katie boxed amateur showcases on pro bills every seat was filled. I guess it shows that people will show up if there is something there they feel is worth their interest.

I forgot to say, well done on the podcast. Good audio updates are a tough thing to manage so fairplay.
