Bad Left Hook Live Results and Coverage: Jean Pascal vs Bernard Hopkins II, Dawson vs Diaconu

Jean Pascal vs Bernard Hopkins II, plus Chad Dawson vs Adrian Diaconu, live on HBO

Tonight at 10 p.m. EDT, HBO presents a light heavyweight double-header, featuring a main event with a chance to make history. Bernard Hopkins, at 46, attempts tonight for the second time to become the oldest fighter in history to win a major title, as he rematches Jean Pascal after their controversial draw in December.

In the co-feature, American Chad Dawson returns against Quebec-based Romanian Adrian "The Shark" Diaconu. Dawson, should he win, will face the Pascal vs Hopkins winner this fall, or at least that is the current plan. Dawson suffered his first-ever pro loss last time out, in August against Pascal in this very same building. Now he faces Diaconu, whose only two losses as a professional are also to Pascal.

The Bell Centre in Montreal is arguably the very best venue in all of boxing, with passionate fans that pack the house every time there's a major fight in the arena, and the atmosphere is expected to be pretty hot tonight. We'll have live, round-by-round coverage and scoring of both featured fights, with immediate post-fight analysis.

I have now heard what feels like the thousandth premature pronouncement of the death of Bernard Hopkins, on the phone from an old Philly friend. All of these predictions are now sweet music to my ears, and I anxiously await the Executioner’s indelible mark on boxing history when he schools a young, sitting champion tonight in true Broadway Bully style. The post-fight interview will be a classic for the ages.

It’s pretty much the way most guys see it. Hard Nard’s opponent tonight isn’t Pascal, but Father Time. Although to be fair Hopkins has handed Father Time a couple of asswhippings in recent years.

Does that make it kind of no win for Pascal? Like, if he wins it’s just because Bernard is old, if he loses he lost to old Bernard.

…I dunno. First four minutes look like Chad Dawson to me. There’s a hard left from Dawson, not clean though as Diaconu dips down with it. Diaconu charges, doesn’t land anything. Dawson sure is relaxed. Yeaaah. That’s the word for it. To Dawson’s credit, Diaconu isn’t exactly bringing the thunder either. In fact you might say he’s doing fuck all. GOOD left to the body by Dawson, Diaconu staggers, Dawson stares at him.

Another hard left to the body by Dawson. Good three punch combo by Dawson, sadly two of them were blocked. But it looked awesome. Bad intentions. Punch through the target. Tommy Hearns!!!

Sad piano story from Lampley.

Diaconu has no real chance in this fight. He doesn’t have strengths that counter Dawson’s weaknesses. He’s just sort of there to be jabbed at, and without any real speed or huge power, he’s just kind of easy to see coming if you’re as good as Dawson is. Diaconu at least getting active.

TOMMY HEARNS

Dawson continues to pretty routinely overcome a guy just about tailor made for him. Dawson with a good shot, Diaconu fires back and finally lands something real. Dawson shoots an uppercut, Diaconu was a little too close to Dawson. Diaconu lands another right, and another good one. Diaconu finally starting to take some real initiative, and finding some success.

Dawson’s effectiveness has, um, slipped suddenly. Poke poke poke. Right to the body by Diaconu. Two left hooks to the body by Diaconu. Total punches landed is flashed. Ah, if only boxing were scored that way, Dawson would still be ahead 9 to 4. Right hook catches Diaconu off balance, and he stumbles, and Dawson does not follow up like always. Come on, Chad. Good right hook by Chad.

Dawson 10-9, but closer

It might just be me, but Chad Dawson doesn’t look particularly different than he ever has. He’s doing fine, it’s just he’s doing Chad Dawson fine. Can’t change this dude. Even though he did drink some of Tommy Hearns’ blood. But I worry about him with someone better than Diaconu is all I’m saying. Right hand by Diaconu gets in.

Dawson coming out aggressive to start the round. That lasts 10 seconds or so. Nice 1-2 by Dawson backs Diaconu down. And again he does nothing. Chad’s also starting to bend over more and more as this goes along. Emanuel on commentary with Max and giving his thoughts. They’re not great. Right hand Diaconu stings Dawson, Dawson comes back. Dawson hurt! Dawson suddenly looks lost. He does not firefight well at all. I really get the impression that Dawson thought this was going to be easier.

Chad is just very lackluster in his style.

I’ve gradually become a boxing fan more and more lately, and after watching El Terrible switch southpaw on Manny in the 12th during their first fight, it’s increasingly hard to enjoy a fight such as this. It just seems so… boring. I like tactical efforts, but there is just a complete lack of aggression and intensity on Chad’s part, even tho he’s winning imo.

Dawson-Diaconu R12

Diaconu picking up the pace in a big way halfway into the round. He’s kind of going for this thing. Dawson catches him with a nice little uppercut walking in. Well at least Diaconu is still trying to win, and Dawson is actually hitting him with good shots when he has those wide open chances. RIght hand Diaconu.

Well these two look legit ready to tear into each other. And then nobody throws a punch for 30 seconds. I like Bernard’s socks. Those are awesome. No punches for the first minute. Pascal moving around the ring. Bernard just staying with him. HEY A PUNCH! From Pascal. Didn’t land. Neither did Bernard’s counter.

Really nothing happening here. Kind of like DeGale-Groves earlier. Tense but no, you know, punching. Pascal with a rush, lands a body shot.

Man Bernard just RUSHES him with a right to start this round. BTW Ian John-Lewis is just as shit of a referee as I feared.

Left hand Hopkins. Pascal is tiring and, well, whining, pretty frequently. Right hand by Hopkins. Here goes Pascal’s gas tank. What the fuck, dude? Get a conditioning coach. Once ever.

Oh Jesus, here goes the referee making a scene of himself.

Pascal looks like crap this round. Stupid fucking jrok. He was right. This has been Hopkins imposing his will, and it’s showing clear as day now. I hate you, jrok!

Total Hopkins round. Jabbering after the round and Pascal is mentally out of this fight now.

Pascal RIPPED with a right hand. Bernard is just mentally dominating him now. Pascal shimmies. Pascal has no clue what to do with Bernard Hopkins after four rounds in these fights. No clue. B-Hop isn’t exaggerating, he’s a four round fighter. At least against someone like Hopkins. Pascal sneaks a right in, Bernard lands a better one in response.

B-Hop chant. In Montreal. Against Jean Pascal. Left hook by Hopkins. Hopkins backs him down with another one, and his head got in there too. Pascal swings a wild left hook, misses, and falls down.

Hopkins gets possibly robbed of a glove-touch knockdown — referee doesn’t catch it. Right hand Hopkins again. Pascal is a hot mess in there. Little left hand by Hopkins stings Pascal coming in. Hopkins with another little rush, and then slips a left. Hopkins not as sensational this round, but hey there’s another right hand. Pascal’s defense is shit. Just shit. Pascal-Hopkins R11

Pascal trying to turn this into a barroom brawl. It does seem like Bernard’s corner is getting away with way more grease on the dome than most referees would allow.

Bernard goes back to just schooling Pascal. Pascal is doing nothing effectively. Then he just walks into a little jab that snaps him back. Just walks right into it. Pascal misses a right.

Pascal-Hopkins R12

Lampley goes on a SPIEL, man, a SPIEL. A SERMON! I wish he’d call the FIGHT and do this after!

Pascal trying – in spurts. Like usual. Hopkins answers Pascal’s best shots. That about says it all. BIG RIGHT by Pascal stings Hopkins! Hopkins felt that! Pascal trying to rally! Hopkins holds on! CROWD ON THEIR FEET! WHAT A FIGHT CITY THIS IS!

Hopkins may still be hurt. Pascal though is not going after him. Terrible mistake by Pascal. TERRIBLE. What does he think he has to lose by going for the gusto? 30 seconds to go. Lampley is confident the cards will be fair. I’m not.

Hopkins floating on his bike, surviving the moments. Pascal should be flat winging it. 10 seconds! And Hopkins hangs on.

Pascal 10-9

Every now and then I nail one…

Hopkins will have learned more from the first match-up and will come with the better game plan, but time and age are, as usual, on his opponent’s side. This time however I’m not betting against the timeless one. I see Pascal showing mental weakness while losing another close decision. I can see this being dirtier than the first one, with Hopkins making generous use of the clinch against a more aggressive-minded Pascal.
