Bernard Hopkins Reaffirms: Chad Dawson Is Next
On his official Twitter account, light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins spoke today and repeated what he stated last Saturday: Chad Dawson is next.
@BadChadDawson @GaryShawBoxing lets me say this all them names is good. But i hv 2 honor my agreement with Chad first. Its me n him next
Hopkins (52-5-2, 32 KO) regained the world light heavyweight championship on May 21 by defeating Jean Pascal on the road in Montreal. In the HBO co-feature on that card, Dawson (30-1, 17 KO) defeated Adrian Diaconu by decision.
It was Dawson who stepped aside at the WBC's request from a contractually obligated rematch with Pascal. Those two fought last August, with Pascal handing Dawson his first pro loss. After a controversial December fight between Pascal and Hopkins, the WBC wanted an immediate rematch, and Dawson allowed the fight with no fuss, with the guarantee that he would face the winner.
But Golden Boy's Richard Schaefer mentioned that he would look for a loophole out of a Hopkins vs Dawson fight after Bernard beat Pascal, feeling that the matchup wasn't the best Hopkins could get. Truth be told, it probably is, and that's even considering Dawson's lack of popularity or ability to draw.
The fight is being negotiated for this fall, says Dan Rafael. Expect Hopkins to confirm when he guests on Friday Night Fights this week.

In fairness I think the Schaefer loophole quote has gotten way too much attention. If you watch the press conference, it seems to me he was just trying to get a laugh from the reporters. At 4:30 here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cr8qYcDv5g4
I just didn’t get the impression he or Hopkins were seriously trying to get out of that fight.
I believe it when the contract is signed
If this becomes true then good on Hopkins for finally making this fight. However, he has ducked Dawson so many times it wouldn’t surprise me if he totally lowballed Dawson and then claimed that Dawson was ducking him.

it would be very interesting just to watch Hopkins mess with Dawson’s head. Will he do a backflip this time instead of push-ups?
And
he will mess with his head. Dawson has got weak mentality written all over him, imo.

I kind of thought the same thing at first, but part of me also wonders whether Dawson’s general passivity might prevent him from succumbing to Hopkins’ mind games. It’s very easy for me to see Hopkins’ rough tactics in the ring giving him problems, but I’m not sure he’s mentally engaged enough to be really bothered by any psychological warfare.
