Bad Left Hook Live Results and Coverage: Chris Arreola and Tony Thompson on Friday Night Fights

Chris Arreola is back in action tonight on Friday Night Fights. (Photo by Craig Bennett/Goossen Tutor Promotions)

Chris Arreola and Tony Thompson are in action tonight on Friday Night Fights, live at 9 p.m. EDT on ESPN2.

Arreola (31-2, 27 KO) just fought on May 14, getting Nagy Aguilera out in the third round. Tonight's opponent is Kendrick Releford (22-14-2, 10 KO), a veteran from Fort Worth, Texas, who has faced the likes of Alexander Dimitrenko, DaVarryl Williams, Tye Fields, and Alexander Alexeev over the years. Releford generally loses in steps up in competition, and is the major underdog against the refocused Arreola tonight.

The co-feature has Thompson (35-2, 23 KO) facing Maurice Harris (24-14-2, 10 KO) in another heavyweight tune-up bout. Arreola and Thompson are both with Goossen Tutor and have in the past traded words. In a perfect world, they'd both win tonight and then schedule a bout with one another for later this year, but Thompson is getting in line with the IBF for a title shot, so that might not make sense to the fighter or the promoters.

We'll be here with live coverage and results, as we head into a sleepy weekend for the sport of boxing. Join us.

Note: Solo Boxeo Tecate isn't live tonight, but there will be replays of Daniel Ponce de Leon vs Cornelius Lock (May 1, 2010) and Israel Vazquez vs Rafael Marquez II (August 4, 2007).

Fine, then I shall comment into the void

I can’t imagine what it would feel like taking body blows while tee’d up for Iron Mike. No wonder that first guy just gave up.

Mike, after another first-round KO, walks up to his opponent:

Mike “you ok?” (we read his lips)
opponent: (Googly eyes)

he’s not ok

Mike has an awkward moment, then half-shrugs his shoulders and walks away.

Enjoying Iron Mike doing work, it is sad that we will go into tonight’s bouts expecting the big guys to reinvent or mimic Tyson with some big KO’s. Ah well, plodding UD or explosive knockout- It is all the same these days. dreaming about Klit/Haye every night

Ah the colonel! too bad espn has got his voice on mute almost. I always wondered why HBO never gave him a gig. Is it because he has spent 20 years with his nose up Don Kings ass or what?

Whatever anyone thinks about Lampley, and as much as I enjoy Sheridan’s enthusiasm, Lampley is a journalist — and in his prime a damn good one. Sheridan is basically a puppet. A big, loud, hilarious, wonderful puppet. And you can’t tell the difference really between the Col. calling prime Mike Tyson or Sadam Ali vs bum.

in what eras could a 46-year-old B-HOP take a solid belt?

And Harris falls over again. This has got to stop. We have got to stop showcasing heavyweights on TV. There are so many better fights out there. This is nearly unwatchable. And Harris falls over once again, this time a slip. And he wants help up. Why is this even happening? Thompson is just slapping at him and finally Drakulich just stops this crap.

I don't think he looked as bas you do

He was very slow. That’s true. But he was moving around, throwing some good hooks, throwing combinations and working on the inside — look, it’s a weak division. But in rounds 2 and 3 he was doing fine for a heavyweight.

by schraubd on May 27, 2011 9:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Heavyweight boxing, IMO, is not as bad as the reputation, it’s probably worse. I hate the division. I fully admit that. I hate watching 95% of the fights in the division. I don’t understand the ongoing fetish people have. I look at it and it gives me gas. I don’t know how you can look at Thompson tonight and go, “He looked very good.” How? He was slower than all hell, his punches looked like they were underwater, and his opponent was so bad that it’s impossible to say he looked good, IMO.

Arreola-Releford R1

Releford shoots a few jabs, they land. Arreola just eats them. “Releford is a personal trainer on the side,” says Rob. He’s probably more a boxer on the side. Right hand by Arreola after he jabs at the body. Arreola looks a lot more reserved than he did against Aguilera, a fight in which he was just a sloppy storm of power shots. Arreola corners Releford — look at him trying to find a straight right. That’s what I’m talking about. Won’t let Releford out of the corner. Now shoots an uppercut when Releford does get out. Arreola looks smart — still won’t move his head, but I don’t think he ever will.

Arreola now getting aggressive in the last 20 seconds. Good body work with Releford covering up.

Arreola 10-9

Arreola-Releford R2

Arreola targets the body tremendously this round with Releford keeping his cover up high. I think Arreola blew a snot rocket. He’s on cruise control in this one.

Arreola 10-9
Arreola 20-18

Teddy is in rare form tonight. But, you know, yeah we know that the amateur system is in trouble. Bang to the body, boom to the head, and all that.

Arreola-Releford R3

Releford looks mentally gone. Arreola looks like he’s trying to get rounds. Can’t blame him. But he might crumble Releford sooner than he’d like to. Just all around solid work in this type fight for Arreola.

Arreola 10-9
Arreola 30-27

Arreola-Releford R4

Arreola looks like he wants the stoppage, but Releford isn’t playing ball. Releford not offering resistance so much as not allowing highlight reel stuff.

Arreola-Releford R5

aaaaaaand it’s become sparring with Arreola sporadically trying to find the KO. He gets rolling late in the round but still mostly covering up well enough.

Arreola-Releford R6

Finally Releford takes a knee with about 1:15 left in the round. He’s absolutely exhausted. Big left uppercut hurts Releford, and he gets on his bike again, or tries to. Now Arreola’s throwing bombs and trying to end this thing. It really is about time to end it. Releford isn’t throwing anything back.

Arreola 10-8
Arreola 60-53

Hey, Rob Stone...

HOW many Americans are in the top 10 again?

And after you answer that question, could you please tell me how many Ricky Hattons there are?

Arreola-Releford R7

For some reason they put Kenneth Releford in a picture-in-picture box so we can hear him shout out the advice, “Come on, Kendrick. Come on, Kendrick. Come on, Kendrick. Come on, Kendrick.”

Kendrick is getting hurt in there and finally Russell Mora stops this thing.

Chris Arreola TKO-7

Get Arreola a fight in a month or six weeks. I want to see a heavweight fight at least five or six times a year AT LEAST.
