Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Victor Ortiz Negotiating?

Is Victor Ortiz next for Floyd Mayweather Jr.? (Photo by Scott Heavey/Getty Images)

A report at Kansan.com says that Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Victor Ortiz are negotiating for a September fight:

Next, Ortiz will face Floyd Mayweather Jr. The details of the fight are still being worked out, but Ortiz said contracts should be signed soon.

Another report at KUsports.com has this:

WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz, a native of Garden City, told the Journal-World on Tuesday night that he plans to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. on Sept. 16 in Las Vegas.

"I just need to look at the contract and make sure everything is OK," Ortiz said. "It’s not 100 percent sure yet, but that’s what I’m setting my sights on."

This is making the rounds, of course, but there are a few things to question:

  • September 16 is a Friday.
  • September 17 is the supposed date for Cotto-Margarito II.
  • Nobody in boxing is really saying anything about this yet, so this might be nothing more than something Ortiz said while visiting his home state, and there may well be nothing to it.

Take this as a rumor for now, but we'll have more if anything develops.

Even before the Cotto-Margarito II got the new 9/17 date

I remember reading that GB would have an Alvarez PPV that day.

Please get made

This is a decent WW matchup with a guy who made a splash in his last fight and a defensive genius. Make it happen!!!

If this is true

Ortiz is one dumb bunny.

He should take a few fights to bolster his record and his confidence before looking bad again so soon. Floyd will dissect him easier than he dissected Gatti.

Fight who? Honestly who in the WW division could he fight for even a tenth of the money that a Floyd PPV is going to put up? Also Floyd is more of a now-or-never type of fighter. Its not like Floyd will just wait on Ortiz because honestly that fight against Berto is the best Ortiz is ever going to look.

Nobody's marketability has gone down from looking bad in a loss to Mayweather

Yeah I saw that earlier, but we had to have somewhere for people to talk about it — I also like how he put fighting in quotations.
