Bad Left Hook Live Round-by-Round Results: ESPN Friday Night Fights and Solo Boxeo Tecate
Tonight's edition of Friday Night Fights on ESPN2 starts at 10pm EDT, and will be a Top Rank showcase event and sort of a lead-in to tomorrow night's big Pacquiao vs Mosley fight at the MGM Grand. Tonight's event is also in Las Vegas, at the Mandalay Bay.
In the main event, super featherweight prospect Diego Magdaleno (18-0, 6 KO) faces veteran Gilberto Sanchez Leon (31-8-2, 11 KO) in a 10-round fight. Magdaleno, 24, does not have an impressive KO rate on paper, but he has stopped his last three opponents inside of five rounds. It looks like the power is starting to come with his punches, and he's turning into more of a prospect to watch as a result.
Filipino featherweight Bernabe Concepcion (28-4-1, 15 KO) is in eight-round action against Juan Carlos Martinez (18-12-1, 7 KO) in one of the night's two undercard bouts. Concepcion is 23 and seems older as he's already been in with some major names, and last year lost a two-round war against Juan Manuel Lopez in July. This is his first fight since then.
The opening bout of the evening is a four-rounder between Notre Dame product Mike Lee (4-0, 3 KO), a light heavyweight that Top Rank loves but has failed to thus far inspire much hope from serious boxing aficionados. Lee will face Gilbert Gastelum (0-1-1, 0 KO) in a pure showcase bout, which will also serve as Lee's first televised fight.
After Friday Night Fights, we'll switch over to Telefutura (start time 11:35 EDT) for a Golden Boy event in Indio, California, on the weekly Solo Boxeo Tecate series.
Ultra tough super middleweight contender Librado Andrade (29-3, 22 KO) faces Aaron Pryor Jr. (15-3, 11 KO) in the main event. Andrade's brother, Enrique Ornelas (30-7, 20 KO) is in the co-feature against Hector Hernandez (10-3-2, 4 KO).
Join us tonight for live round-by-round updates and coverage of Friday Night Fights and Solo Boxeo Tecate! It should be a fun warm-up before the day long Pacquiao vs Mosley festivities tomorrow.

Is it weird that I’m a huge Notre Dame fan but would get a huge kick out of Lee losing?

Concepcion-Martinez R1

You know, there might need to come a point where we stop marveling that very young Filipino fighters start out at very low weights and then come up in weight. That’s kind of connected to the whole having more money due to boxing thing. Concepcion is a full-bodied featherweight with no doubt about it.
I don’t know what the hell he’s doing this round though. Standing and waiting, moving backwards. Nice left to the body by Concepcion, one misses upstairs. Martinez takes the round, i think? Sort of? Sweet jab by Concepcion though.
Martinez 10-9
I would say don’t rely on my scoring. I’m zonked, man.

Concepcion-Martinez R2

Teddy: “I love Saul.” I KNEW IT!!
Concepcion is being really easily backed down by Martinez here and that’s kind of worrisome. Teddy supposes that — WATERS!! — Concepcion might be a little anxious about getting hit again after being whomped down by JML last year. He might damn well be right. Martinez touches the canvas on a low blow. Concepcion starting to unload his right hand now.
Concepcion 10-9
19-19

Concepcion-Martinez R3

Uppercut and then a chopping right by Martinez. Teddy and BK go into the Chris Berman special: “The conversation that never really happened.” Boy Martinez is dominating this round. Concepcion needs to turn this the hell up, and finally late in the round he starts actually fighting.

Concepcion-Martinez R4

Freddie Roach joins commentary to express his disappointment with Concepcion’s performance. There’s a nice right by Concepcion, but Martinez just answers right back. Freddie keeps it real the whole round while things continue going as they have for the most part. Another Martinez round. This is awful from Concepcion.

Concepcion-Martinez R5

God, when Bernabe lets that jab go, it’s STIFF. And there’s a good right. Martinez comes back on him, though, landing an uppercut. Concepcion has no rhythm. He lands an OK punch here and there and he’s like, “YES! Wait fuck. Now what?” And before he can do anything more, Martinez is right back on him. Left hook by Martinez. Concepcion just is not committed to anything at all in this fight and he’s now about to move from 23-year-old fringe contender to 23-year-old really fringe contender unless this gets dramatic. Uppercut by martinez. Concepcion has this almost flippant expression on his face all the time.

Concepcion-Martinez R6

Nice trading, and Concepcion does some work, but Martinez winds up looking like he won the exchange. I just like nothing about what Concepcion’s doing in this fight. He’s losing it in every way. Now Concepcion lands some hard shots, but doesn’t budge Martinez, and Martinez rips him with a hard right in return that pushes Concepcion back. Now Bernabe is looking for the KO. He got enough good shots in this round to maybe start turning the tide.
Martinez 10-9, but better for Bernabe

Concepcion-Martinez R7

Concepcion, when he does land, lands well, but it’s just a punch here and there. Martinez keeps pouring on the pressure and doing work. NASTY right by Concepcion! Martinez can take a punch. Martinez comes back at him. Concepcion knocked back as he lands a hook, and Martinez is pressuring him on the ropes again. Martinez stays right on top of him. BK wonders when you start telling Martinez to stay out of trouble. I say never. God knows what the scorecards are.

Concepcion-Martinez R8

You’d think a guy down 7 in an 8 round fight would try harder than Concepcion is here. Martinez isn’t being dumb, which means he’s just sort of staying back and doing enough to not give the round away without Concepcion taking it. They trade to end the fight, and Concepcion swings that left hook a bunch, landing a couple.
