Bad Left Hook Live Results and Coverage: Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez vs Ryan Rhodes

The Fight Poster Project

Saul "Canelo" Alvarez takes on Ryan Rhodes tonight on HBO Boxing After Dark, and Bad Left Hook will have live, round-by-round scoring and coverage, with immediate post-fight analysis after the bouts. Coverage starts at 10:30 EDT.

Alvarez (36-0-1, 26 KO) has become arguably the hottest young star in boxing today, amassing a large fanbase in Mexico and one developing in the United States. This is his second HBO main event (third if you count his fight with Lovemore N'Dou on HBO Latino last December), which is wild for someone only 20 years of age.

But Ryan Rhodes (45-4, 31 KO) is coming to Mexico to win, and has the sort of ability that Alvarez has not yet faced as a pro. The UK veteran is a southpaw with good counter punching and power in both hands. A win for Canelo tonight would be the best of his career. A win for Rhodes would continue 2011's apple cart madness.

In the co-feature, 130-pound Americans Adrien Broner (20-0, 16 KO) and Jason Litzau (28-2, 21 KO) do battle. We'll have coverage of both fights, so join us at 10:30!

Because they don’t know when the boxing starts, and they don’t run the risk of the fight starting before schedule and people making money out of them, so they stop the markets around two hours before the fight.

Broner vs Litzau R1

Right to the body by Litzau, which Harold wants to talk about, but Papa is instead busy talking about Jason Litzau’s early years and panhandling at the mall and his daughter. For God’s sake, CALL THE FIGHT. Is that so much to ask? To be fair, though, NOTHING IS HAPPENING, and the boos rain down in 90 seconds. Broner is doing absolutely nothing while Litzau paws at Broner. Broner runs around the ring because he can’t find a counter punch he likes. Broner shoots a right, misses, Litzau matches that output. Broner with a wild left hook that does land, and now Litzau is HURT AND IT IS OVER

Adrien Broner TKO-1

Alvarez vs Rhodes R1

Rhodes starts orthodox. Alvarez working around the ring as Rhodes flicks his jab out. Alvarez misses a left hook. Rhodes blocks a right. Left to the body, right blocked upstairs again from Alvarez. Alvarez targeting the body, Rhodes pops him with a left hook. Alvarez backs Rhodes to the ropes, but everything blocked despite the rise. Uppercut does get in, and now Alvarez with a combination. But he’s avoiding most of that. Alvarez backed to the ropes now. Rhodes misses a chopping right. Now southpaw for Rhodes. Alvarez with a right.

Close round, but I think Alvarez did land the harder shots, and about as many.

Alvarez vs Rhodes R2

Alvarez looking quicker, more determined, and sharper than Rhodes so far. Rhodes switches back southpaw again. He’s going to need to start countering no matter how he stands, because Alvarez is starting to use the firepower. Rhodes is being patient, but he’s also just not landing good punches, and he’s not making Alvarez use much stamina or anything, so…just not a great strategy so far by Rhodes, in my view. Rhodes looking for the straight left, can’t find it. Left to the body by Alvarez, then clips him with a right upstairs.

Alvarez vs Rhodes R3

Rhodes starting to shoot more punches finally, but not really landing clean. Alvarez throwing his right hand with intent, and those body shots are digging, too. I don’t think Rhodes is fighting, say, the worst fight, but he definitely isn’t going to win like this. Both guys landing with 10 seconds left, but this is another Canelo round, punctuated with an overhand right.

Rhodes isn’t really putting together too many combinations though, so that might be a reason why he looks better.

I like how, at the end of that round,

as Rhodes finally crowds Cinnamon into the ropes, then lands two stiff jabs, Cinnamon deftly ducks around to Rhodes’ right and turns him around while backing out of the potential for danger.

Alvarez vs Rhodes R4

Rhodes starting to land his jab, finally finding the range better. Alvarez with a right, then he backs Rhodes down with a flurry, and Rhodes slips out of that. Rhodes with a clubbing shot, mostly caught glove. Great body shots from Alvarez, then an uppercut. That uppercut is becoming a money punch and DOWN GOES RYAN RHODES! He bounces back up, but I just don’t know how much more he can do in this fight. This has probably been his best round, too. Crowd is insane as the fight continues. Body shot by Alvarez. Good right by Alvarez, then more body shots and then he cracks him upstairs again. Rhodes is doing what he can, and Alvarez is showing new class.

Alvarez vs Rhodes R6

Left hook by Rhodes. Then a chopping right from Rhodes, but Alvarez comes back and snaps his head back, which probably all but erases what Rhodes has done well this round. Alvarez with a flurry, but nothing getting through that time. Rhodes isn’t running or hugging, though. His gears are turning. He’s looking for the chances. At least there’s that. Alvarez with a body shot. Body shot by Rhodes now, a right hook. Rhodes doing better this round, his best, and he still gets popped by a few shots from Alvarez, who is outlanding him and outworking him. Better round from Rhodes, still not enough.

Alvarez unloading again with Rhodes in orthodox stances. He’s had no real success either way, so whatever. Now he switches southpaw, and falls down on a push. Lederman just noted that the referee has done a good job and I haven’t noticed him, so I agree.

Alvarez is showing the hand speed I think is becoming very underrated. I think Rhodes is busted open near his right eye — yep, just underneath it appears. Turning into a somewhat ho-hum fight with Alvarez cruising now. Rhodes is trying and is tough, but he’s not actually doing anything offensively to change this fight.

Has Rhodes used this stance switching effectively in the past?

yea, tighter D, very cerebral in the first 4 rounds. Well done by Canelo.

Man, Canelo is in real good shape. Top form

the kid appears to be blessed with the perfect physical form for his job, and he appears to take world-class care of the instrument.

Miguel Vasquez just beat up a guy way smaller than him by 2cnd round TKO.

I really hope we’re only like a year away from Canelo-Maravilla

by OmarLittle on Jun 19, 2011 12:10 AM EDT reply actions

that would be a blazing fight

But I’d like to see Canelo improve with the head movement and footwork more first.

by ColtJouvet on Jun 19, 2011 12:11 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah I don’t want it immediately. But it has to happen soon, with Sergio not getting any younger

Martinez is a league ahead of him right now. They won’t make that match until they see Sergio start to falter

And wisely so, really.

Tonight was perfect match-making. Alverez shined as Rhodes waned.

Next time I hope they pick it up a little more and match SA a bit more dangerously. He’s a lot of fun to watch grow but… for me at least…tonight was miserable. I should say Rhodes was miserable.

Rhodes is/was ranked 5 places above Canelo by Ring Magazine…………it was a good matchup

by DPlainview on Jun 19, 2011 12:18 AM EDT up reply actions

On paper only.

If Canelo’s team wants growth, and I am certain they do, they’ll look harder with each succesive fight to get him diversity and experience.

Rhodes offered absolutely nothing but a public sparring session.

Well you don’t get to unmake the fight just because it was bad. Rhodes was a good matchup on paper, where all fights are before they happen. Rhodes took a shit in the ring. But it doesn’t change that Rhodes was respected.
