David Haye on Alvarez vs Rhodes: "Rhodes Gives Alvarez Plenty of Problems"

David Haye thinks countryman Ryan Rhodes can pull off the upset against Saul Alvarez. (Photo by Stuart Franklin/Bongarts/Getty Images)

At his official Hayemaker blog, David Haye broke down tonight's Alvarez vs Rhodes fight on HBO, and thinks his countryman can win this fight:

In terms of style, this is also a great match-up for Ryan, as he won't have to go looking for Alvarez and he won't have to force anything. Alvarez will be right in Ryan's face at all times, and that will present some lovely opportunities for those sharp southpaw counter-punches he likes to throw.

Of course, Alvarez wouldn't have got to where he is today if he couldn't fight a bit, and I'm sure there is a very good reason why he is favourite in this fight. Alvarez is being tipped by a lot of people to be the future of Mexican boxing, and that brings both confidence and expectancy.

If Alvarez can handle the expectancy then he will only grow in confidence from that kind of talk. If he can add the name of Ryan Rhodes to his list of beaten victims, it will go some way to confirming what many people are saying about this young Mexican.

I'm willing to be proved wrong, but I think Rhodes gives Alvarez plenty of problems this weekend and may even pull off the upset. Ryan is very similar to me in terms of attitude and mindset, and he will undoubtedly relish fighting in Alvarez' hometown and silencing the cheers of the Mexican fans.

This is about the same take most have, I think -- Rhodes has a good shot, but is the underdog for various reasons (Alvarez's youth and hometown advantage being high on the list).

One of the reasons I like Alvarez is that he’s a very good fighter who always seems, to me, to be a bit “thin,” in the sense that he could get iced by his next good opponent.

I don’t mean to imply that I hope this happens, but I think that as long as he keeps winning, it will make him edge-of-the-seat exciting to watch. Marciano was exciting that way: he had enough limitations to make every fight exciting, and every win something to talk about.

That is true Rhodes is similar to Haye in attitude. They are both full of crap and are both going be exposed for being the overhyped average fighters they realy are.

Does this mean we can expect a dull fight without resistance from Haye on July 2nd as well?

I think we may just se that. If Haye ran from Valuev and was tentative against Harrison he may just be in there to survive against Klitschko. I suspect it will be a huge anti climax.

Yeah, it’s my fear too that it will end up like Klitschko – Chambers. Well, at least there were those strange wrestling-attacks from Chambers in the beginning of the fight. Then, that could be sth. Haye likes too, thinking of some of his comments in the Kellemann-video.

I really do belive that it is all about the money with Haye. He just wants to retire with as much of it as he can manage squeeze out of fight fans. I am debating whether to even bother to buy this one.

No

There’s no way I can miss this fight after all that waiting. They managed to build sth exciting, emotional here, and if it’s going to be a dull, annoying scene, I want to see it when it happens. (Admittetly that’s easy for me to announce, as we get the fight for free over here).

Na, I will take look on youtube in the morning. I am not sold on Haye. Barrett,Valuev,Ruiz, and Harrison were all missible fights. I didn’t pay for them and I wil not pay for this. Of course I would watch it if it were free. But it isn’t . Taking my wife out for a meal instead. No regrets. I think Haye will stink out the joint.

It’s arguably the biggest fight for Wladimir (at least on paper and definitely regarding the buzz that’s made), that’s my reason for watching it. About Haye, until this point I’d be happy to contribute to let him disappear in some b-prominence-hole, too. Who knows, maybe he backs up his talk, but I do not believe so.

It’s all hype though, and I don’t by it. Haye is very good at hyping up his fights. Look how many people in the UK paid for the Harrison fight. I still can’t belive that people actually fell for that one. I don’t see Haye as a serious chalenge to either Klitschko any more than another fast hard hitting British fighter of about Haye’s size was. He had a lot to say for himself bofore the fight also. But Herbie Hyde didn’t do too well and nor will this guy in my oppinion. I think he will retire with his suitcase full of cash.

PPV sucks. I’m glad that we have most of the fights – and about all the big ones – on free TV. They are experimenting with PPV though, e.g. for a Zbik – Chavez – stream I had to pay 3 euro, which hurt me much less than getting up at 4 in the morning.

And yeah, this Harrison – non – fight – thing was unbelievable. People who paid some serious money to see that must’ve been friggin annoyed.
