Bad Left Hook Live Results and Coverage: Felix Sturm vs Matthew Macklin
Today at 3:30pm EDT, Sky Sports goes live with a double-header from Sheffield and Germany. Bad Left Hook will be here with live, round-by-round coverage, scoring and analysis, followed by immediate post-fight analysis.
In what amounts to the "main event" of the show, Felix Sturm (35-2-1, 15 KO) defends his middleweight title in Germany against Matthew Macklin (28-2, 19 KO). Sturm is the fairly heavy favorite and is making the 10th defense of his WBA belt against the visiting Macklin, who is a two-time European champ and former British champ at the weight, now getting his first major title shot.
That fight is expected to go on around 4:30 EDT. In the United States, Epix and EpixHD.com will be providing coverage starting at 4pm, as will SAT1 in Germany. But we're watching the Sky broadcast to take part in another notable fight today, which will open their show.
Welterweight prospect/contender Kell Brook (23-0, 16 KO) will look to become the first man to stop 18-year pro Lovemore N'dou (48-12-1, 31 KO) in Sheffield. Brook is hoping for a step up to world stage after this, and left Frank Warren when he felt that wouldn't happen there, favoring the growing Matchroom Sport.
Join us this afternoon!

Brook vs N'dou Round 1

Brook working his jab, landing with a right here and there, shooting the punches. N’dou not doing much for the first half of the round, just playing defense pretty effectively overall. N’dou with a body shot. Combination from Brook, right hand gets through but not flush. N’dou starting to pick it up late in the round, but Brook takes the 10.

Just can see the pattern of the fight so clearly already. .. And as I type, Brook lands a load of right hands!

Brook’s defense is extremely casual at times, but he’s just that much fresher and quicker.

Brook vs N'dou Round 2

N’dou starting to press a little better this round, and landing some left hands. Brook jabbing and now opening up! Good stuff from Brook there with a lot of nice shots landing. Nice body shot by Brook with the straight right. Good round for Brook, and I can now see him turning it up and getting N’dou out if he finds the opportunity.

Brook vs N'dou Round 3

Brook with a nice shot to start the round, and he’s starting to put punches together, head and body. I think Brook is really gaining supreme confidence here. He’s getting a little more aggressive as this goes forward and starting to pick his spots nicely. N’dou is there to fight him, but Lovemore just doesn’t have the power at 147 to really trouble anyone. Brook with some good shots, N’dou lands a right hand.
“Very close couple of fights N’dou had with Paulie Malignaggi” — no??? The first one was a fucking shutout.
Brook still just doing more, but N’dou is hanging around as expected.

Brook vs N'dou Round 4

I really like Brook looking to the body here, but it gets him caught with a right from N’dou. Tape comes loose on Brook’s glove. I really like the way Brook is just taking control with these flurries — N’dou coming back at him, and this has turned into a pretty decent fight. N’dou doesn’t look great at the end of the round.

Brook vs N'dou Round 5

Well then! N’dou comes out hard this round and lands some very good shots. Now Brook coming back and pushes N’dou back to the ropes, but that doesn’t last. Brook’s defense, as noted before, could stand to be tightened up. N’dou landing little counter shots here and there, and then he’ll come in with a good lunge. I could see one of those lunges paying off if Brook is 5% slower going back than he has been. Brook goes southpaw and pitter-pats away at N’dou. Brook definitely does want the stoppage here, and I think he’s wearing N’dou down gradually.

Brook vs N'dou Round 6

N’dou looks like the gas tank is starting to empty a little bit. He’s still there to fight, but Brook is just fresher and much quicker. Chopping right by Brook, pushes N’dou back, and the crowd comes alive. BIG UPPERCUT BY BROOK! N’dou with a left in return! N’dou getting hit cleaner and harder, he might be hurt! 15 seconds left in the round and N’dou looks spent! Brook coming at him! Right hand! N’dou hangs on and throws a right in return! N’dou survives a rough round!

Brook vs N'dou Round 7

N’dou still has a ton of grit, but he just can’t handle Brook’s speed and ability to put punches together. Still, he looks better this round than last, and is landing some shots of his own. He might be going into the very last reserve tank the way he looks flat-footed though. Another round for Brook, but I wouldn’t call this cruising.

He’s always got a hangdog look about him, Lovemore. I remember against Matt Hatton he looked positively knackered after the sixth round. He’s still got some left in the tank, but that right hand of Brook is getting through far, far too often.

Brook vs N'dou Round 8

Brook still just landing more, working more. Now he’s got N’dou in the corner with 45 seconds left, but lets him out. I really think he should go at him when he corners him like that. N’dou doesn’t have a lot of energy left, but Brook is looking a little laid back this round.

Brook coming back stronger to start this round, throwing in combination again. BIG SHOT AND N’DOU IS HURT! What an uppercut! N’dou hangs on. Goddamn, he is tougher than all hell. I don’t care if he does get stopped. He’s 39, fighting heavy, and taking shots from a guy who does have power. 45 seconds to go and N’dou starts coming back with rights and lefts. Great round for Brook.

N’dou just will not go away and refuses to run. He’s holding some, but that’s about it. Brook is shooting for the stoppage, though. Right hand hurts N’dou at the end of the round! god, he’s tough. All that remains to see is if Brook tries to close in the 12th.

Brook vs N'dou Round 12

Brook is coming for it indeed. Uppercut lands and Brook trying to close in on him. N’dou looks gone physically. Brook to the body. N’dou tying up trying to maintain his never stopped record. N’dou caught and hurt again! That uppercut is wide open. N’dou desperately hanging on. I don’t think he can survive this one. Brook firing that uppercut again. Loose tape on Brook’s glove again, and N’dou gets a quick breather.
Half a round left. I don’t know what the referee is doing with his yelling at Brook. N’dou is initiating everything inside. Brook with a body shot. I think Lovemore WILL make it. Referee is helping in a way. N’dou is doing nothing but hugging up now. 30 seconds to go.
Uppercut rocks N’dou again, but the fight is over!
I give that a 10-8 as N’dou did absolutely nothing, but N’dou deserves credit for his toughness.

Referee was a joke
Brook looked very good, imo, even considering N’Dou’s age. Alvarez or anyone else had not beaten him that convincingly.
Brook does need to tighten up his defence but he also showed the one thing that i was mainly looking out for: That he can take a shot.
Brook and Cleverly are definitely the best genuine world title prospects in the UK, imo.
That he can take a shot.
Not that N’Dou is a great puncher or anything, but he landed some pretty decent shots that had no effect on Brook really.
I agree
N’dou isn’t feather-fisted and landed some good, clean shots. I laughed when after the fight they suggested Brook fight Malignaggi. I can already tell you how that goes, and I like Paulie.

What a ridiculous choice of opponent. I’d never heard Malignaggi even mentioned before. I can understand that they don’t want to throw him in with the likes of Berto right away, but he should go for the WBA champ or Mike Jones next, imo.
BTW, i lost connection to BLH in the fight, but that 12th rd was terrible referreing.

Watched Sturm-De La Hoya the other day preparing to see this one.
It reminded me some of Kotelnik-Alexander, in that I can understand why both fights were scored completely wrong, insomuch as idiots can’t tell punches landed from punches thrown, and can’t keep how the fight went away from how they thought the fight would go.
It’s not duty, per se, when you’re getting paid that much to do so little. Guess his German has improved over the years, though.

Sturm vs Macklin Round 1

Macklin digs to the body to start the fight. Really going at the body. Now Sturm drops his elbows, but Macklin still digging away. Right to the body by Macklin. Sturm is turtled up in a big way as Macklin just keeps throwing, and a lot of those body shots are really landing clean and hard. He’s happy to go to the body. Sturm with a jab which gets a rise from the crowd. Sturm throws to the body now, unleashes a hook up top. There’s another one that misses. Nice sneaky right from Sturm catches Macklin wide open. Jab from Sturm, body shot from Macklin. Hey this is a fun little first round. Macklin back to digging into the body. This is a big pace from Mack the Knife. He takes the round.

Sturm vs Macklin Round 2

Another right to the body by Macklin. Sturm starting to let his hands go more, pumping that jab out, missing, but getting it moving. Right hand misses for Sturm. Right tot he body again by Macklin. Macklin coming on VERY hard here! This is a hell of a star for Matthew Macklin. He sure as hell came here to win, and he’s trying to break Sturm down physically.
Sturm just not busy enough. Even when Macklin takes a little breather, Sturm is just waiting for Macklin, and he’s not even counter punching him, which he could. Now there’s a nice rally from Sturm, with a left to the body and one upstairs. Macklin comes back on him. This is phone booth stuff. This is my kind of fight if it gets any nastier.
Good chopping right by Sturm. He’s coming alive late in the round. Macklin with another shot to the body. Macklin’s round, but closer this time, and getting very interesting.

Sturm vs Macklin Round 3

Sturm with a good left hook catches Macklin as Macklin lands one. Sturm’s was better. Sturm’s jab coming into play more and more. Not like he likes to use it, but he’s throwing more now. he knows he’s in a fight. Left hook by Sturm. Macklin to the body, then a hook upstairs doesn’t get past the glove. Sturm blocking uppercuts inside now. Sturm starting to turn it up, finding his openings, timing Macklin, and landing good shots, and taking Macklin’s offense away somewhat. Macklin coming back to the body now, just bulling him to the ropes as Sturm holds that guard high.
Sturm with a right, Macklin to the body but those aren’t landing as hard as they were before. Jabs from Sturm, now he has some range for the jab. Macklin chopping away and rocks Sturm’s head with a right hand. Macklin closing the round hard, but this one was Sturm’s, who COMES BACK!
Hey now — hey now. We have a good fight here.

Sturm vs Macklin Round 4

Macklin going back to work, now trying to rip through Sturm’s gloves upstairs. And he’s having some success, too. Macklin lands a right hand. Sturm’s pace back to normal in the first half of the round. Right counter by Sturm, not flush. There’s a nice combo from Sturm, but Macklin eats it and just comes right back to dig to the body. Sturm starting to come alive, and Macklin might have already taken too much out of himself with the pace. It likely won’t come up immediately, but the punches from him — as Watt says — don’t have the snap they did earlier. But Macklin just KEEPS ON COMING. Uppercut from Sturm, Macklin comes back again. Sturm again lands hard, Macklin again fires right back.

Macklin’s activity dipping this round as Sturm has managed to find distance and start to work his game better. Sturm looking very strong this round. Body shot from Sturm. Two rights. Three. Sturm vs Macklin Round 6

Sturm comes off the stool slow and was said to be “slumped on his stool” in the corner. Again Macklin starting quicker. Sturm really looks well out of his comfort zone this round. This is not his type of fight. That said, he’s doing fine in this type of fight. Sturm’s body is all pinked up. Macklin back to outworking him, though Sturm is landing good shots here and there. I will say I think Sturm is a better puncher than reputation, but I don’t know that he’s such a good puncher he can really hurt Macklin without something big. Big right by Sturm near the end.

Sturm vs Macklin Round 7

Sturm fighting his fight this round. This is his pace, his style. Macklin has let him do it, too. Macklin and Sturm both land, and here comes Macklin with a flurry. Now it’s back to Macklin’s fight. Macklin tagging the body again, and going upstairs. Now it’s a Macklin round, but there’s a big right by Sturm! Boy this is some seesaw shit. Sturm vs Macklin Round 8

Macklin busier, Sturm laying off a little. Pace seems to be on both of them at this point. And what a fight this has become. Sturm trying to find the jab. Macklin laying back more than early on, but he couldn’t have kept that up. Still, I think he’s outworking Sturm this round and landing just as much. Both are doing some nice work defensively considering that Macklin has been a little reckless and Sturm has been hit a lot.

I don’t mind Macklin taking that round off. Didn’t take too many punishing shots, but he can’t let Sturm get into a rhythm with the jab.

Thought he tried to take it off and still just outworked Sturm, who didn’t do as much as Watt was saying IMO.

Macklin can’t let a gap develop between him and Sturm. Needs to stay with his head on Sturm’s chest and stop him pumping out that jab.

Even when he lands it at range, if Macklin wants to come forward, he just walks through it.

Sturm vs Macklin Round 9

Macklin back to his earlier pace, or closer to it, and pressing inside on Sturm again. Sturm with a jab, Macklin just goes through it and keeps walking him down. Double jab by Sturm, Macklin’s mouthpiece is out. Quick break, back to Macklin pressing the action and digging away. I like what Macklin’s doing this round. HEEEEY round ends about 12 seconds early by the Sky clock.

Sturm vs Macklin Round 10

Sturm trying to find his rhythm still. Might be a little late for rhythm finding when it’s a rhythm like Sturm enjoys. Macklin finding himself at arm’s length, though, and Sturm is taking this round. There’s a nice uppercut from Sturm. Half a round left to go, who knows what Macklin comes with from here. Macklin digging again, mostly blocked by Sturm. Macklin coming hard again with under a minute left, and Sturm backs into a corner, then turns it around and starts winging rights — BIG ONE LANDS! Macklin hangs on and just fights back! What a fight this is! Another right catches Macklin coming in. That right hand is ALL THERE for Sturm now!

Huge round for Sturm.
Macklin is dog tired, but he has to get closer to Sturm, otherwise it is Felix’s fight from here on in.

What a stunning fight.
So much sustained action, it’s been magnificent to watch.

Sturm vs Macklin Round 11

Sturm landing hard again, but Macklin is right there. Blood from Sturm’s mouth. Sturm battering Macklin when he lets it go. Just starting to outbox and outfight Macklin, who is still there to fight. Great uppercut by Sturm, Macklin just GOES THROUGH IT. I mean Macklin is just going through some really good shots, and they’re hard, clean shots. He’s just that tough. He’s also blocking most of Macklin’s flurries now. Macklin with a left, then a right does land. Left hook by Sturm.

WHAT A FIGHT
115-113 Sturm, but that was FOTY stuff.

Sturm vs Macklin Round 12

Sturm starting with big shots, Macklin trying to find his way in but can’t land the way he was earlier. In the latter rounds his body work has really gone away. Macklin just firing away! Sturm just landing the better punches now, has been for the last few. Macklin going at Sturm to the body again. Macklin throwing everything he has but most of this is being blocked. Right hand by Sturm. Macklin comes back hard! This is another tight round. Right hand by Sturm, Macklin back again! More rights from Sturm! STURM ENDING THE FIGHT WITH A MASSIVE RALLY!
Good God, what a brawl. What a fucking fight.

I’ve seen 118-110 Macklin cards. Lou DiBella is already screaming bloody murder. All I’ll say is, when Jim Watt — JIM WATT — has it a draw, if you’re going 10-2 Macklin, y’might really be showing reverse German bias more than anything.

A great fight. A great, great fight. Macklin’s best performance to date and he has nothing to be ashamed of. Will say now Macklin is moving up in our MW rankings. I’d love to see a rematch.

116-112 is in the realm of possibility. Let’s not get all up in arms when the more appropriate score would probably be 115-113 Sturm. It’s one round, people.
It could have been a draw. I had Sturm ahead by one round, wouldn’t have argued hard about it.

Dan Rafael and Lennox Lewis crucifying the judges over on Epix. I have to agree with them, in that I can’t see how Sturm won eight rounds. I thought Macklin won 115-113.
He had this one for Berto

We’re not talking about 118-110 scores here. Which some of the Germany-hating Macklin boosters are claiming for Macklin.

I was a bit suprised by how educated Macklin is. He was studying law at university but dropped out to pursue his boxing career. He also speaks German fluently, as you mention.
Yes, it seems he has quite a few string to his bow.
After all, it wasn’t really a good fight by Sturm. He didn’t capitalize on his strenghts enough. Probably that’s what made it a great fight in the end.
"Sure, there have been injuries and deaths in boxing – but none of them serious." Alan Minter
And there lies my fear if there was a rematch. With some separation, as in the most percussive parts of the last rounds, Sturm landed some wicked blows. Imagine a fight that starts with five rounds of that.
Didnt really rate Sturm before this but wow.
With so much stuff to hate about boxing these days I’m glad theres still guys that put on a show like this and make me a fan of them. Great stuff by both.
