Bad Left Hook Live Results and Coverage: Devon Alexander vs Lucas Matthysse
Tonight at 9:45 pm EDT, HBO presents a Boxing After Dark triple-header headlined by a 140-pound bout between Devon Alexander (21-1, 13 KO) and Lucas Matthysse (28-1, 26 KO).
The Alexander vs Matthysse fight has turned out to be pretty evenly picked by a lot of media and serious boxing fans out there, but one wrinkle came to light today that might have an impact: The fight is apparently scheduled for 10 rounds, not the 12 many suspected. That could have a major say in how the fight goes, as many thought Matthysse would have the firepower to win the fight late, and now there appear to be two less rounds than most expected, given that this is apparently a WBO eliminator, and eliminators are 12-round fights.
The night will begin with a heavyweight fight between Bermane Stiverne (20-1-1, 19 KO) and perennial fringe contender/journeyman Ray Austin (28-5-4, 18 KO). Austin is most famous for once being knocked out by a Wladimir Klitschko who only threw his left hand for two rounds. Stiverne is making his US TV debut at age 32, and has some skills. This is a big shot for him.
The co-feature of the night will be a 175-pound title clash between unbeaten Tavoris Cloud (22-0, 18 KO) and fringe contender Yusaf Mack (29-3-2, 17 KO), who is Cloud's mandatory challenger. Cloud is the massive favorite.

Stiverne vs Austin Round 1

Stiverne likes to move his hands in front of his own face. And feint. First minute features a few Austin show jabs. Austin coming forward with a flurry and lands a few right hands, including an uppercut. Stiverne has done nothing. Lots of head movement. Austin going behind his jab. Wow. Stiverne is doing nothing. At all. He lands at the bell, and Austin keeps throwing after the bell, then apologizes.

Stiverne vs Austin Round 2

First minute and 15 seconds nothing happens. WELL thank GOD they put the heavyweights back on HBO. Goddamn this is fascinating! Stiverne has no idea what to do with Austin so far. Finally he lands a left hook, now Austin is hurt by a right hand! The guy can punch, this is ALL I WANTED TO SEE!

Hi everyone
Hope you are all having a nice weekend and enjoying the fights

body shot and a shot upstairs by Stiverne. Austin now has him on the ropes so he tries to touch him with his hand, like a cat approaching an unfamiliar dog. Austin with a right when Stiverne misses one. Boy this is a thriller. Stiverne with a body shot. At least he’s occasionally throwing a punch. Right hand by Austin. Left by Austin as Stiverne somewhat comically misses him in combination.

Stiverne vs Austin Round 5

I do get the feeling that Stiverne will wipe him out as soon as he lands hard, but if this guy’s supposed to be a challenger for the Vitali vs Adamek winner, let me offer this, and I never say this: LOL.
Stiverne has no appreciable skill in against someone better than Kertson Manswell it appears. Austin is just completely dictating everything about this fight. I’m not meaning to sound like a dick here, but I know Ray Austin isn’t very good, which is telling me a lot about Stiverne. Austin MAKING STIVERNE MISS.

Cloud looking for openings, but Mack is a fairly clever guy. If Cloud were smart he’d be bringing the pressure here like Johnson did last year. Mack isn’t the toughest guy to break down, but he can box a little, and I would say is a better boxer than Cloud is. Mack with a body shot. Cloud trying to let his hands go, can’t find the plate. Only seen the Judah fight. Seems like it would be a fun fight though
It’ll probably only happen when neither of them can get money to fight in the States anymore. HBO isn’t going to Argentina and it’s worth $0 elsewhere.

Alexander vs Matthysse Round 1

Alexander quick, like he used to be. Using his hand speed and staying in the pocket a little bit. His jabs are still short all the time. I’m sure that’s enough for Hurrld. Matthysse with some rights to the body. Neither guy landing big punches so far. Heads come together a bit. And again they come together. Hard right to the chest by Matthysse.

Alexander vs Matthysse Round 2

Matthysse starting to find Devon in his range to start this round, but Alexander staying in there. Like the fight as it has started. And the grunting’s back! Alexander short on most shots, but that right hook gets in, and he might be picking up the confidence that leaves him openf or a counter. Matthysse is quicker than widely believed, I think. Quicker than Maidana. They’re not mirror images.
Matthysse with a right, but Alexander stings him with a straight left. There we go. Let’s get a fight here. Matthysse with another right near the end of the round. These rounds are real close.

Matthysse cracks him with a left hook behind a right. Alexander is looking very lively, but I just don’t think he’s that good. I don’t think he has the power to deter Matthysse. DOWN GOES DEVON ALEXANDER! Not a huge knockdown, but he went down, and now back to action and Matthysse is going to come hard. Matthysse stalking and looking for the opening. Alexander wanting away from the wheelhouse, and understandably so. Alexander looking for shots of his own. Again, he’s lively and game. But I don’t think this fight is for him.
Matthysse stalking him again, trying to rough him up. Alexander trying to come back into this round, good for him. Alexander isn’t bothering Matthysse because he’s not really landing much, Bob. Pitty-pat short punches.

Alexander vs Matthysse Round 5

Right to the body by Matthysse. Those have become a go-to for him. Look, I’m sorry, but here we are for the third straight fight, and Devon Alexander just does not land punches. He just doesn’t. And when he does there’s rarely anything on them anymore. This is three fights in a row. I’m not saying Matthysse is great — nor is Kotelnik — but they land real punches. This time it’s Matthysse to the body. Little left hook by Matthysse and Alexander coyly smiles yet again. Ugly round overall.

Matthysse just has no fear of Alexander whatsoever. None. Body shot again from Lucas. Right hand by Matthysse lands as Alexander pulls back. Another right by Matthysse, and another. Another one. He’s got him pegged right now. Body shots again. Alexander is just open and wide in his stance, and this round is getting one-sided. Matthysse just drilling Devon this round. Body shots really are adding up. Left hook cracks Alexander. And another right. And another one. Body shots in there. Totally one-sided round for Matthysse. Poor Lucas is never going to leave Argentina after Zab and Devon.

Even parts of the home town crowd is booing...

The world became a less amazing place on June 18 2011, with the death of Clarence Clemons. R.I.P. Big Man, you will be sorely missed.

Alexander winning I can maybe force myself to see. Him winning 96-93 I can not
All of it. Gimmie, gimmie, gimmie. I want it all.
Do they have a breakdown of judges rounds anywhere? I could almost 95-94 see it if they gave the first three rounds straight to Alexander.
I need to follow my gut more. As soon as Scott posted about the 10 round switcharoo, I had a feeling this was tainted and thought about skipping. I can’t deal with this shit. Makes me feel rotten, this whole situation.
I think I’m going to make it a point to avoid Alexander fights in the future. It does me no good to be this angry at midnight on a Sunday, and I have no faith that any close fight in his future career is going to be fairly judged. He makes crap fights on his own, so what’s the appeal? He’s a living emblem of everything wrong with this sport.

Look people cry “robbery” too much, like Chicken Little saying the sky is falling or the boy crying wolf. But THIS was an actual sham and a crime. This is on the order of Casamayor-Santa Cruz. It is absolute bullshit.

The whole situation is grotesque.
Total scam.
Yea, it was bad. The 9th could’ve been 10-8 with no KD. Matthyse just beat the shit out of him for half the fight, won two more rounds and got a KD.

Devon Alexander deserves credit. Credit for fighting hard and staying on his feet…in a tough fight…after two tough losses against Bradley and Kotelnik.
yes
And he lost to Kotenlik and he lost this.

I'm drunk, admittedly. And I won't mean this tomorrow.
But I am really really close to being done with this sport. I just can’t do it. Too hard. Too frustrating.
(I will love this sport tomorrow… but I am willing to walk away from it tonight)
@RealNolenBailey
I had that impulse. I shook it off tonight, but only because I’m not drunk yet. Gin me.

It's all combat sports man... things are rough.
I write for the kickboxing blog on this network and there was a decision in that sport last night that was perhaps even worse than this.

Head Kick Legend would be the one.
It’s become largely a mixed martial arts blog, but I try to keep it honest with the kickboxing. Stop by some time if you’re a fan of the sport; it’s a great trio of sports and a great trio of blogs that cover it.

Well, rounds 4, 7 and either 8 or 10, most likely (he gave Matthysse three rounds),
but that is still absolutely insane.
And I was in such a good mood. Now it´s ruined…

What is up with that shit he’s pulling?
I love Roy’s commentary, says some great shit that nobody else does. But at the end of the night, he routinely spreads honey on top of cowshit and says “let’s eat”.

The cynic in me says when you comet St Louis and get paid to fight Alexander, you come for your check and accept the loss. Unless you knock him out.

If you’re, I dunno, someone of the caliber of a Chop Chop Corley? Maybe. If you’re a former titleholder trying to regain one (Kotelnik) or a potential rising star with only one questionable loss (Matthysse), fuck all that.

I’m not agreeing with him persay, but I can’t fault him for thinking like that. This boxing shit is foul, pun not intended.
