Graham Earl v Micheal Katsidis....Why

Graham Earl v  Micheal Katsidis.....Why

Star-divide

Four years after there first fantistic battle its looks like a re-match is close to being signed, and the fight could take place in late summer, my question is...Why. Earl was a good servant to british boxing but his last fight was 2009 a points win against Karl Taylor (16-125-7) previous to that he'd lose three on the bounce, Katsidis has lost two of his last three but at a completly diffrent level. This fight serve's no one, the firat time they met it was an exciting give and take war this time round could just be a massacre.

I agree, it’s a disgrace, but then Earl has been calling Katsidis out, so………
Earl will get badly beaten. I would be suprised if it went beyond 3 rds.

I'd be amazed if he got into a 3rd round

I don’t like seeing beatdowns. I like seeing competitive fights.
If Kat wants to try and carry on his habit of fighting Brits, he should try some real challenges on for size like Khan or John Murray.
Murray would give him a real fight and Khan would turn the so-called “Pom Killer” into the “Crushed Convict” :)

by Matt Mosley on Jun 3, 2011 7:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Graham Earl and Kevin Mitchell were mid level fighters at best. Earl is and was nothing more than domestic level.
Beating them two didn’t prove much.
Katsidis is a limited fighter when talking world class. Tough, but skill-wise, nothing special at all, imo. I was never a fan and to be honest i think the first fight between Kat and Earl was a bit overrated.
Just a brawl. Not much skill involved, IMO.

Kat is the Pom Killer

by Boss Man on Jun 3, 2011 9:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Do you know what Pom or Pohm actually means, Ted?

Prisoner of Her Majesty, which is quite ironic really seen as it was the convicted British who were sent over to Oz as POHM’s years ago.
They call us it but it is funny and pretty meaningles to us in that context seen as they are both old Brit convicts and POHM’s. :)
Hahaha.

Bascially Australia started out as a colony for prisoner’s we didn’t want in the UK. :)

I don’t mind Kat as a fighter but it’s not like he’s at Manny’s “Mexicutioner” level.
Not disrediting him, because i picked Mitchell to beat him, but Mitchell had only moved up from 130 not long before his fight with Kat and the difference in size was apparent even at the weigh in.
Kat’s head was twice the size of Mitchell’s. :)
It was a good win for Michael but Mitchell, and certainly Earl were not even the best in the UK when MK fought them.
Khan was.
The Mitchell win was a pretty good one but Earl was always just an average domestic level fighter.
Kat is, and always was at least a level above both, imo.

I can confirm this from experience. English and Irish women are somewhat underrated though, imo. They just haven’t got as good a tan. :)
There are different theories to the origin of the name but that’s what some Ozzies i worked on the building site with told me.
It’s all good fun and i got on well with the vast majority of them. They are my kind of people, hard working and real, no bullsh*t.
I may well return to live there one day.

He’s even more shot now then so what would fighting a guy whos been mixing with world class prove?

I like to watch Katsidis...

But what’s the point to this fight? Fighting a guy you’ve already beat, who since has lost a few more times, then retired…. I’m baffled.

by Phill on Jun 3, 2011 7:37 PM EDT reply actions

Murry v Katsidis, now that would be a war, a peek Katsidis beats Murry.

I agree with Phill, no point to the fight, everything was proved first time round.

by ybsteam on Jun 3, 2011 7:44 PM EDT reply actions

Ask Calzaghe that about Mario Veit , Phil ;-)

In reality Mick should retire . Dead set. Ditto Earl. This is one of those fights that make me wonder why I bother following the sport. If it was Earle and Kats last fight then maybe. But I bet the winner fights on. Spot on Matt, Earl and Murray lack the physicality to be world class fighters. Katsides was simply to strong for them . Cheers Fellas. Qld 3 – 0 in the State of Origin Matt. Go the Maroons!

by JC40 on Jun 3, 2011 8:19 PM EDT reply actions

Haha..!! Now I KNOW that comparing

Earle’s two ko losses after his fight with Mike ‘I use my face for a fist’ Katsidis, with Veits 15-0 streak after the first Clazaghe fight, can only prove your off your Ozzy head mate!
I won’t mention Nard’s epic, never to be forgotten rematch with Roy, by the way.

I 've benn watching JC

I love it. Have always liked the Maroons over NSW. You fellas just keep churning em out.
That Michael Jennings is like lightning. And what about Lockyer, still providing the class.
It’s a treat to watch.
I can’t hardly watch our crappy Super League anymore. Once you watch your stuff, ours is like watching in slow motion. :)

by Matt Mosley on Jun 4, 2011 5:03 AM EDT up reply actions

couldn't agree more on that analogy

Super League is remarkably slow in comparison. But then the intensity of Origin is incredible, so when I watched my first Super League game after an Origin ries about 6 years ago (I used to watch back when Martian Offiah and Ellery Hanley were playing, but then I went more into union) the difference is very stark. And the best player always seemed to be an Aussie or Kiwi lol.

But then the games where the NRL winners come over are normally well contested, so…

by BrianBrock on Jun 4, 2011 7:07 AM EDT up reply actions

IMO

Aussie rugby league is the only league worth watching, Brian.
State of Origin is the highest standard,as you know, with the NRL not far behind.
Internationals between Australia and NZ are usually of a high level too,as the Kiwis’ have improved, most likely because most of their players play int he NRL.
English league has gone backwards, imo.
The era when you mentioned, with Offiah and Hanley, was better than the current one, imo.
Whenever Brits like Sam Burgess, Adrain Morley and Gareth Ellis go across to play in the NRL, they improve noticably.
Ellery Hanley was one of the most successful Brits to play in Oz, at Balmain and when they are in that higher class environment, they tend to thrive.
Similarly, whenever Aussie coaches and players come over to England (regularly), they improve the game.
English league has a lot to learn from Australia but they don’t seem to be doing so.
They haven’t won a series against them since the 1970’s and, this may come as a suprise but we used to beat them regularly before that decade.
The Aussies improved, we didn’t.

by Matt Mosley on Jun 4, 2011 8:07 AM EDT up reply actions

My personal belief, having grown up in a rugby league culture, is that our players just aren’t fit and athletic enough, not to mention skilled.
Whether it’s through the heavy drinking culture, lesser training methods, i’m not 100% sure, but i think it’s something to do with those things.

by Matt Mosley on Jun 4, 2011 8:26 AM EDT up reply actions

You do get some world class English players (mainly forwards) but they are relatively few compared to the Aussie conveyor belt that just keeps on producing.

by Matt Mosley on Jun 4, 2011 8:27 AM EDT up reply actions

ah

I think Aussies drink harder than the English – certainly the Southerners anyway. I heard they breed them tougher up North ;)

I think its most probably mindset allied with the fitness/skills that you said….I’m a long way from an expert but you watch a game from one league and then the other and the difference all round is just remarkable. The fitness may or may not be That stark, but in skills terms its generally not that close. Maybe because in the NRL they seem to execute that bit quicker.

Well, i lived there for 18 months and they certainly didn’t out drink me. :)
They only drink out of half pint glasses for a start. :)
Nah, they can drink can the Aussies, but no more than the lads i grew up with.

by Matt Mosley on Jun 4, 2011 9:32 AM EDT up reply actions

maybe overall they're bigger drinkers

I remember this club on Sunday mornings called The Church, in North London (normally known as the Forum) when they all go to drink from around 11am till 3/4. Messy. Always took friends up there at least once when they were over.

They definitely drink more than the guys I grew with, so maybe its a North/South thing ;)

by BrianBrock on Jun 4, 2011 11:17 AM EDT up reply actions

The intensity of Origin is incredible. NRL highlights are pretty good too.

Yeah, NZ won the World Cup hey, which was a bit of a disaster for Aus especially as I think they thrashed them earlier. Aus are always pretty big favorites, I think?

Watching ‘Chariots’ and that Wigan side was something I remembered from when I was younger. They were probably quicker than the guys today. I don’t know if they were better in a relative snse to the Aussies in the late 80’s early 90’s, as I don’t think I ever caught much international league games at that time. It is funny now how all the best coaches are Aussie or Kiwi, you never hear a coach come up in league on Skysports news and have a Brit accent.

I think also maybe they’re getting more guys that maybe qualify through residency from the neighbouring islands and that basically helps, as (to generalise a bit/lot?!) they’re pretty naturally athletic.

It took such a huge cultural shift in mindset to get the union side up to Australia, many years even with a long term plan, so its going to be pretty hard to catch up unless another Woodward character comes along.

Hard Grounds Brian

Ask any Brit player. Its a different game playing on a hard , dry fast Aussie or South African grounds. The outside backs get a better go and ball handling- passing is encouraged compared to say a 2 degree wet night at Salford or even Twickenham. Just a theory.

by JC40 on Jun 4, 2011 7:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Spot On

Theyve changed league to much . Now its 4 boring one out rucks then one backs ball and a kick. Over and over again.

by JC40 on Jun 4, 2011 7:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Pom Forwards are as good as Australian ones

Have always been as good as ours , its in the inside backs and centres we always have the edge. Sam Burgess is a potential champion , Gareth Ellis might be the best forward in the game , Morley was a gun ( and an extremely hard man ) . Going back a bit Kevin Ward was the best forward in Australia when Manly won the comp in 1987. A great player. Malcom Reilly and Phil Lowe were great players here in the 70s. At Union England always has a gun forward pack and invariably has wretched halves and centres who waste all the good ball they get. Wilkinson was pretty good , thats why you won the world cup with him.

by JC40 on Jun 4, 2011 7:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Good stuff, JC

Nice to hear an Aussie who knows what he’s talking about give our forwards some credit.
The backs are terrible though…..Martin Gleeson???…WTF!!!! :)
We’ve even lost one of our best halfbacks, Kyle Eastmond, to union for next season.
I was talking about how crappy the Super League is before but i have to say, if there is one team who play free flowing, entertaining stuff, it’s St Helens.
Even though i should support Leeds, Saints are my favourite team to watch.

Over here, i mean. There’s plenty NRL teams i’d pick over them.

by Matt Mosley on Jun 4, 2011 7:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Hanley was a champion

Ellery had an incredible year in 1988. He was probably the best player in the whole comp that year. Terry Lamb king hit him in the grand final and that was the end of Balmain. Chariots was a cat but he was still the best finisher I’ve seen. He knew where the tryline is . Great speed , great hands and great anticipation.

by JC40 on Jun 4, 2011 7:12 PM EDT up reply actions

But couldn’t tackle to save his life. :)

by Matt Mosley on Jun 4, 2011 7:17 PM EDT up reply actions

LOL Matt

Ellery was a grabber mate . I cant deny that but he was a better tackler than Darren Lockyer. Locky is a dead set speedbump.

by JC40 on Jun 4, 2011 7:19 PM EDT up reply actions

I meant Offiah.
Hanley was good at everything. One of the our best ever.
I could tell the Aussies respected him.

Garry Schofield and Andy Gregory

Why doesnt England produce players like that anymore? We used to admire those two here in Oz . Brilliant attacking players.

JC

My dad played for pro for Bradford when they were Bradford Northern and he doesn’t even watch the game anymore.
He prefers to watch the union internationals, if anything.
He says there’s no skill to it anymore, too regimented.
I disagree, cos i think that just applies to our game, not your’s.
The Aussie international team and the State of Origin is as good to watch as the All Blacks, imo.
Too much kicking and rucking in union, imo.

by Matt Mosley on Jun 4, 2011 7:24 PM EDT up reply actions

the super Rugby here

has made me into a fan . I didnt even watch Union as a kid but the game here has improved immeasurably as a spectacle. Your old man is right. The days of skillful forwards in league are long gone . Blokes like Lee Crooks , Artie Beetson , Harry Pinner , Knocker Norton etc might not have been as big , fit and fast as the modern forwards but they were " FOOTBALLERS" . Nothing better at league than watching a gun ball playing forward . I preffered the 5 to the 10 meter rule too . It made sides have to ball play in the forwards as they had to try and beat the close defense with skill as one up rucking in those days was a suicide mission. Cheers mate.

by JC40 on Jun 4, 2011 7:29 PM EDT up reply actions

I preffered the 5 to the 10 meter rule too .

Me and my dad had that conversation not long ago.
He made similar points to you.
There was definitely more skill involved before. It just seems predictable nowadays.

by Matt Mosley on Jun 4, 2011 7:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I always had a soft spot

for certain really sneaky Pom forwards like Barrie McDermott , Kelvin Skerret , Kiwi versions like Kurt Sorensen . I wont mention John Hopoate LMAO Hes Teds favourite league player . Take it easy mate and Im geeing hard for Frochy today. He’s my favourite Pom fighter.

by JC40 on Jun 4, 2011 7:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Kelvin Skerret.

There’s a name form the past.
Andy Platt too, i reckon.
But what about that c*nt Sorenson. What a baastard! :)

hahaha

Sumo Sorrensen never saw a head poking out of a tackle that he wouldnt belt. Its funny because his older bro Dane was as clean a front rower as you would ever see and a really honest player. Unlike his little brother " Sumo".

Yeah, it’s 1-0 at the the moment. NSW were more competitive than they have been the last couple of years though. It was a good game, asw usual. Game 2 is a week on Wednesday
Overall, it’s still close i think. I think the score is 16 wins to Queensland, 12 to NSW, with 2 draws, so not that much in it.
NSW will have their time again, i’m sure.
