Bad Left Hook Live Results and Coverage: Yudel Jhonson vs Jose Miguel Torres on Friday Night Fights
Tonight's edition of Friday Night Fights is live on ESPN2 and ESPN3.com at 9 p.m. EDT, and Bad Left Hook will be here with live results, commentary, and round-by-round updates and scoring.
The main event tonight is a 154-pound fight between Cuban Yudel Jhonson (10-0, 7 KO) and Jose Miguel Torres (21-4, 19 KO). Torres has a very empty record, but Jhonson is the showcase fighter. In March, he shared a FNF bill with countryman Erislandy Lara. Lara disappointed in a draw against Carlos Molina, but Jhonson showed his skills with a win over Richard Gutierrez.
The co-feature won't be the fight we listed in our TV schedule for this week, as that is now off the bill. Last I heard the new co-feature was to be Tyrese Hendrix (20-2-1, 9 KO) taking on Walter Estrada (38-14-1, 25 KO) in lightweight-or-thereabouts eight-rounder. Hendrix was seen last year on TV against Hank Lundy in what was a pretty entertaining scrap, and Estrada has been around the block over the years, facing the likes of Yuriorkis Gamboa, Scott Harrison, Mikey Garcia, Kevin Mitchell, Roman Martinez, and many more. He's a globetrotting journeyman who can punch a little and has often been a fine test for up-and-comers. In his most recent two bouts, he beat Nate Campbell and lost to Vicente Escobedo.

WHOA
First time I’ve sat down to watch boxing on the TV since I moved it forward about six inches on the stand. Freaky. (Boxing is the only time I sit on the couch and watch TV.)

I’m a bit confused… I thought this FNF was supposed to be the first night of the Boricua Invasion card?
Bob Arum would promote Lucifer himself if he could put asses in the seats.
oh ok… I’ve been really out of it these past few weeks… all last week you kept saying “oh, this week sucks” and I kept thinking “We’ll we have froch/johnson and chavez/zbik, that’s something”… and of course, that was not last week.
Bob Arum would promote Lucifer himself if he could put asses in the seats.
Hendrix-Estrada R1

About once or twice a month now, we see two southpaws fight each other, and the TV commentator notes how rare it is. Both trying to feel each other out with the jab. Atlas points out that Estrada has stiff legs. And Estrada hurts Hendrix just a bit near the bell, so I barely nick the round his way.
Estrada 10-9

Hendrix-Estrada R2

Hendrix not reacting great to a little flurry from Estrada, but most of it doesn’t land anyway. Estrada is starting to look really old; physically I mean. Estrada with another left hand that lands. Right hook by Hendrix, doesn’t land clean. Jab from Estrada pops Hendrix’s head back.
Estrada 10-9
Estrada 20-18

Hendrix-Estrada R3

Calling Estrada a featherweight contender in his past is a little…much. Estrada’s landing better shots and just controlling the action. Hendrix has really done nothing so far, and we’re talking about an eight round fight. He needs to pick it up.
Estrada 10-9
Estrada 30-27

I know, but he wasn’t really a contender. he just got a title shot.

I wouldn’t even call him a spoiler. When he fights real prospects he loses. This is more that Hendrix isn’t good.
Bad Left Hook
"To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day..."
No. He drew Logan McGuinness and beat Nate Campbell, though.

Hendrix-Estrada R4

Hendrix finally does a little, but then Estrada starts deterring him from doing more. Hendrix swinging from the outside. Not even close. Right hand from Estrada stings Hendrix a little. Some asshole in the crowd is on his phone waving at the hard camera. Get bent, doofus. Estrada wins another round.
Estrada 10-9

Hendrix is slow, doesn’t punch enough, and telegraphs what punches he does throw with those totally unconvincing little feints.
Boxing writer: "Iran, what are you going to do when you retire?"
Iran Barkley: "Rob your house"
Not to mention stands flat-footed on defense.
Anyone with a little pop would send him over no problem.
Hendrix-Estrada R5

Nice body shot by Estrada, then goes upstairs and steps back out when Hendrix decides to open up in return. Good shot by Hendrix! Estrada to the body, then Hendrix pops him again upstairs. Hendrix really needs to get going and this is a good start to the round for him. Estrada still making the round close, and cracks Hendrix a little.

about as suprising as that he’s still beating the “new school fighters don’t have fundamentals” drum he was on last week.

Hendrix-Estrada R6

Teddy has it 3-2 for Hendrix. Hendrix doing a little more than Estrada this round and the last, I think. Good right from Hendrix near the end of the round.

"To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day..."
Hendrix-Estrada R7

Estrada back in control more this round. Hendrix walks into a right hook and then a left to the body. I have Hendrix needing something big now.
Estrada 10-9
Estrada 68-65

Hendrix-Estrada R8

Estrada finding Hendrix with good shots, trying to secure the fight if it’s close, and it probably is. Good stuff from the vet. Jeez, Hendrix, what are you doing? I guess I’m glad this went the distance so I don’t have to see Luis Ortiz fight on TV.
Estrada 10-9
Estrada 78-74
Bad Left Hook
"To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day..."
I smell a draw or a gift Hendrix decision. I really didn’t score it but it seemed a pretty even fight slightly in favor of Estrada, right?
I don’t think Hendrix is anybody’s prize, so I’m hoping he doesn’t get gifty scores.

ESPN always has the most fucking outdated headshots. What was Froch in that photo, a one-year pro?
Bad Left Hook
"To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day..."
Teddy sounds very into Froch vs Johnson.
Bad Left Hook
"To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day..."
I've only seen Johnson fight once, but he seems something of a poor man's Andre Ward
Quite a different style from Froch.
Folks agree?
Nah, Johnson gets up in your ass with more than his head. Wow. What a gross sentence that was.

Canadian?
One of the things I was very excited for when I moved to the US last year was FNF.
Jhonson-Torres R1

Jhonson tearing him right away, nice body shot. Torres walking into these combos because he’s not good enough to not walk right into him. Also he hasn’t fought in two years. I get the impression in one minute that Jhonson could finish this whenever he wants to. Torres is really slow of hand. Jhonson is not.
Jhonson 10-9
Bad Left Hook
"To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day..."
Jhonson-Torres R2

Jhonson is obviously better and obviously in control. Torres lands once in a while but he doesn’t seem to be bothering Jhonson when he does. Torres is standing in there and trying, at least.

Jhonson 20-18

Ehhhh. Cruise control fight. Torres has to wait for Jhonson to get near him because he doesn’t have the speed to start anything.

Many of these Cuban fighters seem like they’re mailing it in… Do you think it’s the level of competition or is it that their heart is not in it?
Bob Arum would promote Lucifer himself if he could put asses in the seats.
Both. This is why I constantly say I wish after they got 6 or 7 fights, they’d just start fighting real fights. They’re wasting their time being 30 years old in shit like this.

Like, compare this to the Gutierrez fight, which had some credibility (a little at least). Jhonson was much more impressive in that fight because he assumed he had to really fight.

I agree… it just seems like they’re bored and they don’t want to do this… I’d like to see the Guillermo Rigondeaux documentary to hear in his own words why he left from Cuba and what he wanted to do in the States

Jhonson-Torres R4

Jhonson picking Torres apart more this round. I’d really like to see the obviously better man just finish this off. Guys get a little chippy as Teddy and Joe get bored and start talking about Sugar Ray Leonard, and OH BOY, when we get back they’ll talk about Ray’s sexual abuse claim. Oh thank God.

Anyone else catch that basketball game last night? Pretty amazing stuff from Dallas down the stretch.

indeed
Most hilarious being that dingleberry Dwyane Wade and his stupid showboating sparking the rally.
