Bad Left Hook Live Results and Coverage: Mikkel Kessler vs Mehdi Bouadla, Gavin Rees vs Andy Murray

Mikkel Kessler (right) returns to the ring today after a long layoff. (Photo by Photo Wende)

Mikkel Kessler makes his return to the ring today after a year-plus layoff due to an eye injury, facing Mehdi Bouadla in Copenhagen as a tune-up to get back into the upper echelon of the super middleweight division. Kessler (43-2, 32 KO) won his last fight against Carl Froch in April 2010, and is the heavy favorite today against France's Bouadla (22-3, 10 KO).

Also this afternoon in the UK, lightweights Gavin Rees (34-1, 16 KO) and Andy Murray (24-0, 12 KO) lock horns, battling for the vacant European title at 135 pounds. That show starts at 5:30 p.m. EDT, and Sky will also have a briefly-delayed airing of Kessler vs Bouadla, but our priorities here are Kessler first, then the Rees vs Murray fight. Polsat has the Kessler vs Bouadla fight live, sometime around 4:30 EDT or so, and we'll finish that one before moving to the Sky Sports card, unless that proves impossible, in which case we'll just watch the Sky broadcast, with Kessler on the slight delay.

Remember that Showtime is also airing Kessler vs Bouadla on delay tonight at 9 p.m. prior to Froch vs Johnson. We won't be hiding results, because there's no point and this isn't some huge fight or anything, so get on the live boxing train this afternoon if you're concerned about Kessler's comeback.

Kessler jabbing, Bouadla finding him with some early shots. 1-2 from Kessler. Now pumping the jab at distance. Kessler controlling from the outside now, jab jab jab. Bouadla lands a couple jabs. Kessler starting to throw a few power shots, including a long uppercut. Mostly just bossing with the jab. Looks fairly sharp all things considered.

Down goes Bouadla and he is in a bad way! He doesn’t look good at all. Man Kessler isn’t fucking around here. This is as gross a mismatch as i expected – maybe more so. Kessler just hammering him now. Bouadla staggered again. Now he’s trying to pull some Naz shit, Bouadla is. Instead he just gets cornered and pounded on some more. Big right! Kessler-Bouadla R4

Bouadla really is standing in there and trying. Trouble is he doesn’t look like he can punch much and he’s not near Kessler’s class. And down goes Bouadla again with 10 seconds left in the round, just caught wide open and down he went, shaking his head. This is a pointless exercise now.

Rees already throwing haymakers within the first 30 seconds. Nice right by Rees. he’s getting Murray leaning in. Rees moving in and out very well, slipping punches and landing that right hand. Upjab lands. Rees using the jab nicely so far, then picking him with that right hand. Murray’s going to have to adjust to the speed.

So far Rees just looks a higher class than Murray, who can’t seem to find an acceptable range. Rees doing a good job getting in, tying up, and getting out. It’s not the prettiest thing in the world, but he does it effectively. Rees easily winning this so far. Murray looks passionless in there.

Rees-Murray R3

Rees going to the body now, which he didn’t do in the first two rounds. Rees totally dominating this fight, and doing so without having to really stretch himself, either. Murray has really done nothing.

Rees-Murray R4

Murray lands a right, same as he did last round, and then Rees gets right back to work on him. Murray just doesn’t look comfortable in there at all. Not fighting with any urgency, not trying to do anything different. Short on jabs, missing most that he follows with, then he just tries the same thing again.

Rees 10-9
Rees 40-36

And I blanked and didn’t post that

Gavin Rees with the worst Roy Jones impression I've ever seen there

Rees-Murray R5

Finally Murray starting to show some aggression. Good right by Murray, Rees rolls with it. Now Rees starts hit little hands down Calzaghe impression. Rees FIRING bombs toward the end of the round, and that steals one of the closer rounds of the fight – not that it was all that close.

Rees-Murray R6

Rees clearly no longer has any respect for Murray’s ability. He’s toying with him, and in doing so is winning the fight just as easily as he has been for the first five rounds. Murray has had basically zero success in this fight. Rees nailing him with big shots this round, repeatedly. Just totally in control now. Murray has nothing.

Murray with a little left hook. Rees maybe getting a bit sloppy at this point, maybe tiring some. Murray actually winning this round. But unless something big happens it’s probably too late.

Yeah, Rees has slowed down quite a bit, and looks lethargic. Murray pressing him to the ropes, both digging to the body. Rees loses a point because he’s getting a little dirty. Proactive referee. Rees holding and holding. He’s suddenly in dire straits for God’s sake. Rees throws, but he’s now completely exhausted. Well what in the hell. Rees throwing everything he’s got trying to get Murray out of there. He’s desperate.

Rees-Murray R10

Rees looking a bit more alive this round, but he’s sloppy as hell at this point. Tired as he is I think he’s winning the round again, because he’s shutting down Murray’s offense with all the holding, and landing some good shots. Murray wobbles a bit on a left hook. Rees with another big shot.

Credit to Rees, he’s fighting with all he’s got left now. It’s ugly as boiled sin, but he’s still getting the job done and not letting Murray establish offense.

Rees-Murray R12

Rees with a left hook. Right hand by Rees. Another one wobbles Murray a hair. The real problem here is that Andy Murray just isn’t very good. A better fighter might have really put it down on Rees the last four/five rounds, Murray won two of them. Another right by Rees, then he ties him up and kills a few seconds. Left hook by Murray, but Rees throws and ties him up again. Murray needs a knockout here in 20 seconds, and Rees will probably hold him for 12 of those. And he has done so.

Just tuned in – all I know is those are my least favourite gloves out there. Sounds like the fight went as most thought it would go, to be honest. He’s always fun is Gavin Rees.

That’s dependent on HBO making it available for UK users… But yes, the whole thing is super exciting. Don’t think its going to be that fun to watch, but it’ll be tense, tactical and interesting.
